this style of music is called "Gagaku" and has a distinct lack of melody. it was usually played for nobles and the emperor and is considered one of if not the oldest forms of orchestral music

I am replaying for the first time in years and noticed how interesting this song is so I decided to listen to it on its own. I didn’t expect it to make me cry. This soundtrack transcends “video game music.” The musicians that got to work on this project probably will never forget it. If you think the first half is boring, I challenge you to not skip it and let it build. The way it takes the instrumentation of the first half and uses it as counterpoint against the stronger melodies later after getting it into your ear is genius, and this composition is insanely clever and satisfying to listen to for so many reasons.

Ive beaten okami almost 20 times and have been playing for 5 years, its only now in my second stray bead run i stay in the aristocratic qtr long enough to hear the music for this area and i cant believe how beautiful it is and fitting for what happens in act 2

Recently bought the HD remake after last playing this game in 2006 when it first came out, and the soundtrack (and everything else about the game!) is still amazing. This song fits so well with the atmosphere after the Queen is killed. Mournful for a character you never really get the chance to know.

Fun fact about Himiko, she actually existed in real life. She was the queen of a kingdom called ''Yamataikoku'' or just ''Yamatai'' She is also the oldest known Japanese person.

I know I'm two years late, but I first played this as a kid, I was absolutely amazed when I noticed how the tone of the song changed with the context, it was my first experience with something of the sort. Actually, thinking back on it, Okami had a major influence on my emotion development as a kid

Like many, I think of Himiko when I hear this track (one of the most beautiful in the game imo); however, it has a different meaning for me. Her death was definitely tragic, but I like to imagine the whole track as the proceeding of the ending of a life, and the spirit's subsequent awakening in the Heavens, finding rest and reward from all its labors and suffering. The world was certainly poorer for Himiko's loss -- but Paradise is all the richer for her presence there, and to me that's what this track represents.

This music is called "Etenraku" (0:00 to 2:05). Well, it's a variation of it. Etenraku's meaning is roughly translated as, "Music of the Heavens". Look it up. :)

@@okhario233 I just did some studying. I found that it is not one, but two instruments together that makes the noise I was hearing. The Sho (as you mentioned) and the Hichiriki. The two sound amazing together, and the blend so well that I actually thought it was one instrument making all that sound!
