This song sampled “Intro: O!RUL8,2?” which is the intro song from BTS’ 1st Mini Album released in 2013, which is why perhaps it sounds vintage and reverb-y, because the lyrics of this song is a direct response to that song. The theme of this album and Persona are going back to their roots. They’ve been referencing their old stuff recently.

The vintage sound at the beginning is because the song starts with a sample of their Comeback Trailer/Intro from their O!RUL8,2? album. (Just like Persona sampled the comeback trailer from their Skool Luv Affair album.) We think Ego will sample Nevermind (from the HYYH album), Boy Meets Evil (from WINGS) or maybe What Am I to You? (from Dark & Wild). So clever!!

@jhopeur72194 жыл бұрын
@@ahnrhea That makes sense. But two isn't enough to establish a pattern so I'm not sold that they're going backward. Like these two happen to be consecutive backwards but maybe there's some other reason they did those two in that order--like the theme was more related or something? But that would be cool and really who knows with these guys, amiright. haha. They make fools of us all on the regular. haha
@ErikaCartet4 жыл бұрын
I also think ego is going to be 2 cool 4 skool, not because they're "going backwards," but because they've been revisiting the school trilogy specifically for map of the soul. so far we've seen them do it with intro: persona, boy with luv, and now interlude: shadow. plus recently they've been performing from the school trilogy at award shows in korea.... boy in luv, n.o, we are bulletproof pt. 2, and intro: skool luv affair (plus that medley of their discography across eras, but all FULL performances of old songs have been school trilogy). it makes me wonder whether this title track will revisit n.o or no more dream, similar to boy with luv. but all of this is still speculation, and ego might break away from that pattern completely. as you said, you never know how these guys are gonna surprise you haha

Quiiick crash course on Jungian psychology: Persona = different personalities we put on (depending on who we’re with); ie. you have different personas talking to your family versus your friends, etc. Shadow = What you unconsciously suppress to create each persona (qualities that society might not approve of, like being “tOo MaScUliNe” for a female, for example) Ego = the conscious mind Self = your full self, including both your ego and shadow (which is tied to your self) Animus (masculine)/Anima (feminine) = If you were to harness parts of your shadow (eg. Being commanding and forward as a female, breaking that societal expectation), then you could _consciously_ incorporate that into your personas when necessary (using your ego aka your conscious mind). So this song references how you cant just ignore your shadow, because its a vital part of you. Sugas shadow is his greed and ambition (be a rap star, rich, the king, etc), and he tries isolating it and getting rid of it-except you cant just eliminate your shadow because then youll confuse your persona with your self and lose your sense if identity. So rather than harnessing that ambition like he should, yoongi (in this song) lets it take him over. Read the lyrics at the end of the song and its his shadow speaking to him
@423bear4 жыл бұрын
Wait, on the reverse part, it was basically Suga talking about his dreams in the past and when the reverse stops, it’s his dreams and thoughts in the present. The lyrics mirror that too

Also when his voice is supposed to stand out , the effect used on the parts he want to point out, i find all of this so interesting, as a Regular listener since years i can't see these things alone so i am glad a professional talks about it, it explains so many things . When the beat changed and you said it sounds like chaos, it is meant to be chaos because that’s his ego/shadow speaking to him. When he starts singing, the reverse stops bcuz it’s now the present, in which he says “dont let me shine” cuz although he has everything he desired in the past and more, there’s a shadow that grew w it and it’s overtaking him. So reverse kind of sound to get you in shadow since the very beginning and it inhabits the song. First the shadow is calm, quiet, present in the background, opposite to a public persona displayed in the light sounding more sweet and normal. Also exposed, scared and vulnerable. The shadows strengthen and finally merged with this light persona melting in a craziness. Everything is told through the music. That boy is really something. You have blue, red and green. Red color against green flashlights visually amazing. Fascinating to listen and to watch.

Suga grew up in a not-so-wealthy family and he's been through a lot of hadships. He's always wanted to be popular, have money and all that. He left his hometown Daegu because of that dream and went to Seoul, wanting to become an idol. And because he's never had much of it growing up, he thought the luxury of being at the top is everything. He's also a producer and is always putting his emotions into his songs. So it seems like in this song, we basically see his story. At the beginning it's just a quiet wish that grows stronger as time passes by. But though he's getting higher and higher, here's a part of him that just doesn't seem contained by what he's got, constantly pushing him to do more and more (the boy in red light). But his other side realized that the life they're leading is not the heaven they imagined, it's lonely and frightening, and they were faced with things and feelings they didn't anticipate (the blue light). There's even a little moment when the "blue boy" smiles bitterly when the "red one" takes over and starts rapping his chant again, as if he didn't like him being in charge. But no matter how hard the blue one tries to arase the red one, he just always seems to find his hiding spot somewhere in the chaos around and strikes at the times the blue one is vulnerable. They clash, but the red can't be arased.

One correction: Yoongi never wanted to be an idol; he wanted to be a producer and rapper, yes, but he’s mentioned in his solo interviews or when being particularly introspective (such as in festas) that he never really wanted fame. Obviously, his rote answers in interviews and such suggest otherwise, but he definitely plays up his bravado in those things and in concerts. When he’s being more genuine, you can tell that was never a goal of his.

Basically the song talks about the reality of fame. It mentions in the music videos the album O!RUL8,2? which talks about what they want to achieve (fame). The doors are basically the doors to fame, and they show how he had to leave a piece of him behind, and how now he wants that piece back. You might be confused about the two Yoongise (let's say the blue and red one). The blue one actually represents Suga, and the red one represents Yoongi. The scene where Yoongi is in the crowd of people who are ignoring him shows how people so more concentrated on Suga, that they are ignoring Yoongi. There is also a scene, I don't know if you noticed, where two red circles (looked like an 8) basically connected them, where Suga was in the upper part of the 8 and Suga in the lower one. Idk what it's called, but I know that Suga represents the ego while Yoongi represents the shadow, where ego is all good that we see in something, and the shadow us the darker part of it, mostly kept hidden. Thus song is actually really deep, he shows us what it's really like being something we dream of.

Suga could understand English, but wasn't very sure in his speaking. It's different skills, Hobi and Jin also understand more than they speak.

I like watching again your music producer reaction to BTS videos from time to time. Through your reactions I can appreciate even more their artistry. It amazes me when I know the background of the song and then you come and tell us that same story just form their production elements. Especially this song is such a masterpiece. More than a song it's a well thought piece of art. I love how the concept of the shadow overpowering oneself can be appreciated not only from the lyrics, but also for the musical and production elements. I really wouldn't be able to know that if it weren't for your reactions, so thanks a lot man, I really appreciate your videos.

The vinyl crack might be because the melody is one of their old ones from an intro O!URL82? They did the same for this that they did for the Intro: Persona. Took one of their old beats to be the base for the new song. Like the mic cracking the glass was part of the old intro too.

I always find myself coming back to this reaction of yours. It amazes me on how you could get the gist of the story behind this song from just the music alone. This is one of the many reasons as to why i’ll always look forward to your bts reactions.

You explained the music production from ur perspective as a music producer gave us a whole new light on the way we perceive this Interlude. Wow... in the final verse, you said the music sounds chaotic. In that part, 'Shadow' is talking to Min Yoongi and his Persona (Suga) and telling him to just accept and be at ease with it. It describes the chaos in one's self as one's Persona clashes with one's Shadow. Wow.... Suga produced this song with another 2 BH's producers. Looks like he explains what 'Shadow' means according to Jung's analytical psychology not just by using lyrics and visuals, but also using music arrangement/production as well. To me this is pure arts.

Nice reaction and nice explanation! Everything changes in the end since his "shadow" is talking now. I like how disturbing and scary it sounds. And you pointed out that in the beginning we can barely hear his goals, but then after the chorus, we can hear him clearly. I hadn't noticed that! Thanks for the video Joey!

The “goals” he was listing off at the start might come off a little idk “I want this give me this I want it” type, but it’s supposed to give you the feel like you said these were things he hoped for to happen and then later on when it gets louder he has achieved these things, but then it’s starts taking over a little, loosing his sense of self not knowing what to do next, an empty feeling that usually comes with success, and then when it all turns red it’s supposed to be his shadow the greedy one the “evil” one starting to take over a little. I personally got a really big villain vibe from him around that point. Kinda like when a new villain is introduced in a marvel movie or something... And then when he starts rapping rlly fast and everything sounds messy and distorted it’s supposed to represent that things isn’t Suga rapping, this is his shadow taking over saying how “we are the same” “I am you you are me” “you’ll never get rid of me” stuff like that. And also in the music video you can see that for example when there is two sugas, one up on the stage and one in the crowd the one in the crowd is supposed to be Yoongi, his “real self” kind of and no one is noticing bc everyone is so occupied looking at Suga the “star”. And the big mob of people is supposed to represent some of the more violet “fans” who stalk them and run at them with cameras and won’t leave them alone. (Then as in BTS) earlier in the music video you can see these people trying to look into the hotel rooms, a representation of the creepy stalkers they deal with on a (sadly) regular basis.

Wow, after I watch this video, I can understand the song a lot better and it all makes sense as he is switching between his shadow and persona in his song. The reverse sounds and hall reverb vocals are his shadow and the normal music and vocals are his persona. I love this song more

I just noticed how not only does he sample an old music sample from O! RUL8, 2? He also sings about his past wishes and dream, portrayes a brighter self in the beginning but the sound is also reverse which emphazises this even more. I never noticed the reverse. Now it fits even more together. Suga = Genius
