Music Teacher Reacts: PENTATONIX - Love Me When I Don't
TONIX TUESDAYS - EPISODE... uh... 6?
This video was so much fun to work on and then edit! I really feel the love from all of you and moving back home to the home studio has made things just look and feel way better!
This video spoke to me deeply, so I do my best to hold it together during the reaction. The lyrical content is really striking a nerve for me and I am so glad you guys told me about it!
Sending love,
-DJ

The musicality of this aside I really appreciate the positive message of the lyrics...it's a struggle for many (most?) of us to ask for help even when we're at our very lowest points. The amazing solo vocals, the terrific rythym tracks from KO and Matt and Scott's amazing runs and riffs make this a treasure. They look and sound fabulous, but then, when don't they? Thanks for covering this one - I always look foward to your Tonic Tuesdays!

As a fellow Pentaholic, I've heard this song countless times. But good gracious, your reactions are the best! I honed in on Matt this time, like you said. He's so freaking talented!! It always feels like the I'm listening for the first time right along with you. Tuesdays are my favorite now. 🙌🏼😎

This is actually a live performance they did for the Kelly Clarkson show. They just video edited it with the position swaps for the video they released shortly after their show appearance. Amazing audio and even better live than in studio!
@Wiley_Coyote
@Wiley_Coyote 2 жыл бұрын
Even on the show it wasn't true live. It was just a more straightforward pre-taped sequence. Standard for all of these out of studio performances (especially in Pandemic times), they likely did as many takes as they wanted, and sent over the best one. Of course, the position jumping effect added later (clearly this was all in front of a Green screen--they were literally in static positions and moved or removed as needed) probably makes it even more confusing, since that makes it look edited.

I appreciated Kristin's voice holding down the fort on this one. I read that she had a hand in writing the song. Each bandmate just shines in their contribution to this very important and timely message. Really like this original from Pentatonix. Thanks for reacting to it!!!

She was actually the primary songwriter on this one.

With all due respect, her name is not Kristin; it's Kirstin, it always was Kirstin, and it always will be Kirstin.

This particular version was recorded "live in the studio" for one of the TV talk shows, so it is a slightly simpler arrangement than the studio version, with none of the audio effects heard on the album. When it aired on the show, it was just the five of them standing there singing. All of the jumping from place to place editing was done in post-production, and this became the official video of the song even though it's not the same audio recording. Kirstie was the primary songwriter on this one (she wrote or co-wrote more than half of the songs on The Lucky Ones album), but she gave everyone a chance to shine in this. Many of the songs she writes have very personal lyrics, as heard here.

Loved your comment about the message in this song - almost the whole album has very personal messages in the beautiful lyrics of the songs, it really is a great album and the changing style of their production shows how much they are still engaged and willing to keep pushing the envelope with what they can do.

Great reaction. Thank you. Kirstin is a co-writer on this song. She writes and co-writes some very catchy and heart-felt songs. All of them are great on the song but I had been focusing on Matt in this song also. When you said that, it made my day.

Besides being an immensely ear pleasing song…I find it amazing that they take what could be a very dark subject and relate it in an upbeat manner that allows the listener to explore the subject with the positivity it takes to overcome the problem…rather than brood…

I think Matt has the smoothest baritone voice since Nat King Cole. If you listen to Unforgettable it sounds like Matt is Nat reincarnated. If PTX ever does a volume 2 of Classics Matt should do that song.

They wear the in ears in concerts otherwise they wouldn’t be able to hear each other. I think they also commented they keep time as well - which makes sense. This video they did individually from home and then edited it together. So not ‘live’, but still live and minimally produced. Kirsten also had a big hand in writing this one. Thanks for reacting to this one…definitely a recent fav of mine.

I really look forward to your reactions of PTX. Try reacting to #7 & 10 performances on the Sing Off. As far as sharing your heart with others, trust me, your actions take the place of words. I'm that 72 NAM Vet. who considers these Kids to be musical savants and you sir, are equally gifted in what you do. I consider their music to be "ear candy" and you help me realize what different flavors I'm tasting! God Bless and Keep You Safe

One of my favorites in this group is now Matt. Although I guess I truly don't have one favorite because they are all just so darn wonderful! I remember how we all were so upset when Avi announced he was leaving the group, and how sad we all were, thinking there would be NOBODY who would be able to come into this group and take over for Avi. Boy were we all wrong! Of coures Avi and Matt both sing bass, but there the similarities basically end. They each have their own sound, range, and abilities. By naturally being different, I think we were all afraid PTX somehow wouldn't have the cohesive sound we were all used to. Wrong again! Even though the two of them are so different, they each brough something separate and unique to the group and their sound. And to me, both are magnificent at what they do - and magnificent for PTX! Personally, Matt is nothing short of a true master at bass slides! That is something hard to do - and do it in perfect tune! But Matt does them over and over and over! In fact, I listen to each and every song more than once (I'm sure we all do!) and one time through is solely to listen to see if Matt snuck in his famous bass slide! Remember that it was Avi who recommended Matt to take his place in PTX. Avi gave us one last gift with that recommendation. I really don't see how anyone could fit in better or take over for Avi like Matt has!

Latecomer to this, you were talking Avi's voice compared to Matt. I get sensations from listening to voices, I think Avi's voice makes me think of autumn evening around a bonfire, wearing flannel shirts, just being there as life drifts on. Matt however, the warmth of his voice is more like a mug of Italian hot chocolate, snuggled on a sofa by the fireplace.

Fun fact... Scott Ad Libbed from his solo on... that's not how the studio recording on the cd is... lol. I'm halfway disappointed this version didn't get added to the deluxe. Can we touch on the bass drop at the end of Matt's solo? That would have been Scott... unless they looped...
