Best teacher on the internet. No gimmicks, not overly flashy, just pure learning. I used to get so bored at this but after seeing how useful it really is Ive really gained an appreciation for Andrew because I now see that most "experts" only seem that way when you're a beginner. AW really knows his stuff.

Diminished Triad Chords are essentially a minor triad chord with a lowered fifth. Their formula is: 1, b3, b5. - Andrew

Awesome! I'm an older player who has done the bar band thing since the 80 s and I'm going thru a music theory course for the second time, hoping it sticks this time. Your theory videos have been excellent in filling in the gaps. And I've found many others you've done on techniques hugely helpful as well. You're an excellent teacher. Thanks for all your hard work.

@plumeriaink On the diminished chords, he explained that (B, D, F) which when they are sounded together will sound like a diminished chord. An easy way to remember this is that they always happen right before hitting (I) again so every (VII) will be diminished chord. The difference of what a dim chord is and a minor is that a minor is (B, D, F#) and Diminished is (B,D,F) which the difference is that the 3rd note of the triad is flatted, brings a creepy sounding chord.

Ok, I think I got it D Phrygian is D Eb F G A Bb C. Harmonized; the triads would be: DFA, EbGBb, FAC, GBbD, ACE, BbDbF, CEbG. All the scale degrees are major except for the fifth which is augmented, is this correct.

I've stumbled upon this gem explaining exactly what I wanted to know in a simple way. I knew chord formulas and how to construct them based off the root note but I couldn't grasp the relationship of the chord tones to the parent scale but after watching this I finally get it! So useful as I was looking for ways to quickly identify target notes over chord changes while sticking within one scale in my guitar improvising! Don't know how I didn't see this sooner, it was all right there lol thanks for the lesson! 😁

I might have to watch this video a few times and reference those videos prior as well because pentatonic zakk wylde scales only gets me so far. The harmonies and the chords found in jazz will only perplex me if I partake in jazz music and only try to memorize solos and chord compings from the jazz greats. I can see I missed the most important basics of music already haha but I'm onto it! Great explanations here and appreciate your sharing!

5/3 is a chord in its root position meaning CEG the interval between the C and G is a perfect fifth and the interval between C and E is a major third. = 5/3 now 6/3 would be the inverted form of that cord now the third that was in the middle would be the root meaning the E and the G would sit right on top which would be a third and the c would move up to the next C on the staff thus creating a major 6 between the C and E which is now the root and the C which has been inverted which gives u 6/3

@cris5949 ... You need to just learn more about music theory. Andrew is completely correct in his use of Diatonic. In my University music classes most of the Prof's mention the "Modern" meanings of many musical terms. In classes with strict Classical Prof's, it can be more ridged. But, Diatonic can refer to at least 3 concepts in modern music... Inside a mode, the opposite of chromatic, or a mixed meaning based upon context. You'll have to read up more to fully understand it.

I drive a truck for a living and I'm trying to memorize the circle of 5ths while I'm at work. I thought it would be a good way to know the I-IV-V progression in any key. Now I see from your video that you could also use the circle of 5ths to determine the minors (II III & VI) and the aug because they are always in the same relative position from the root. How practical would it be to know the circle of 5ths that well as opposed to memorizing each chord progression for each key by just pure rote?

my question maybe not related with the video but i want to ask about clef reading in term of guitar playing. is there any disadvantage when we unable to read the music symbol a.k.a the clef ? i heard people said that able to read the clef is a bonus but not a must but instead to learn to develop music knowledge and practice are more important. but others said the opposite so my question is if i want to learn the guitar do i need to learn the clef ?

Hey Andrew, a note to say I've found all your lessons really helpful to my musical development, cheers , Al from London, UK. A quick question, hopefully you can help: if we take Dmin from the C maj scale ( I understand why it's D minor but should we think of this chord as the tonic minor of D major?) - as it wouldn't be the relative minor of F Maj - and the 3rd chord as tonic minor of E maj?)

@zliminator If you take the time though and get to know every scale in rote. And you learn "formulas" for how triads are built. Then you'll be surprised how open the whole guitar becomes to you, especially if you combine this with memorizing the fretboard in it's entirety. Learning scale patterns and triad shapes = a huge leap in ability..Plus once you have this foundation laid, everything is much easier to understand.

ok im a little confused on one thing. I know a little music theory and i know that the I IV V chords are like usually always major. but when you were explaining why D is a minor in the major scale you said thats because its only 1 and a half steps not 2 whole steps. wouldnt F be a minor too because between B and C is only a half step? and the notes in F are F A C. lol idk im just confused a little bit.

Anyone else think he purposefully used an alternative roman numeral system (without cases denoting chord quality) on purpose to attract more viewers? He has the all capital roman numeral sequence as the thumbnail because he knew it would raise eyebrows, then mentions the irregularity at the beginning of the video, but waits until the end of the video to explain the reasoning behind it. Clever.

So major is R, 2,3.4,5,6 ,6 Octave....bue why on the guitar do you have a minor 2nd and major 2nd etc.....what is the origin behind this and do why say there are 8 notes in an octave, when in fact (if ou count the enharmonics) there are 12?
