Listening to your critique and review of this again because of the New official video release of Call Me A Symbol. Love your views and breakdowns on music. If you like Jinjer's harder side check out Under The Dome off of King of Everything. A Truly bad ass song (and album). To me their most aggressive work and quite possibly the best song they've written in that Death Metal genre. Excellent song. But yeah, Call Me A Symbol is a song I can never get enough of.

Thank you so very much for doing this! Kind of exactly in the 'wallflower' situation here. In this context specifically: 'my circle of old friends is getting empty and I don't really wish for new ones' I've always felt a great connection to Tati's lyrics, but now it has become downright spooky. As this means that there is noone in my life I can discuss music anymore on a deeper level, it is truly heartwarming to hear and see you enjoy the music I love so much. Since I started listening to Jinjer I've been picking up on influences as you have. Definite Slayer groove in this one. Wallflower vocals remind me of .... Bif Naked in the clean parts. I used to tour with Bif so that really stuck out to me. I also get random Bungle and Rush vibes every now and then, a riff here and a bridge there. The obvious No Doubt tone. Unlike Bungle, who tend to absolutely break from the form into others (one of my all time fave bands, seen them twice in the early 90's) Jinjer gives tiny homages to their influences without letting them take over the composition and incorporate them seamlessly into a Jinjer whole. Nothing else like them out there and they've taken me out of a near 20 year music depression and gotten me excited again about possibilities for advancement in music. Praise Jinjer, the non-wanky masters of their craft!

It's Jinjer time. I just got done listening to the whole album and I'm so happy it's just what I expected. Napalm records is killing it right now. It's official I start here with my reaction channels. I'm glad you are doing it this way. As you said sometimes you just need to hear the music without the visuals. And I guess I'll lucky that I have already done that and can't wait to see what they unleash visually next. You always have a great take on what you hear and you verbalize it well. I’m in love with the last quarter of the song. Especially the breakdown starting at 2:43 of the song. It is a beautiful depression that takes place and it’s irony to the arrogance of the lyrics distinguishes this song for me. Somewhat characterizing the subject of the song as a straw man of sorts. Wallflowers is shaping up to be my favorite since Cloud Factory (fav probably KOE but Jinjer hasn’t given me a dud yet). I will admit I walked away from my first listen with a somewhat lackluster disposition but I find each time I listen back I find a deeper appreciation for each song. It feels like the Fight Club of albums for me. I have to listen over and over, finding a new wrinkle each play through. Thank you for your in depth reviews! I love how much you dissect each part of the song.

This is the kind of thing me and my best friend would do back in the 80s whenever new stuff would come out, pointing out bits and analyzing. It would help us each pick up something one of us hadn't noticed before. But this is even better, as you're a far more advanced musician than we ever were. This means even more new stuff to notice!! It's funny, the first couple listens of new Jinjer, I'm not even sure I like it!! I remember going through this with the Macro album. It's as if I hear all the different sections separately and immediately forget them as one goes into the next. Eventually, I'm able to grasp the entire song as a whole and it "comes to life", then I absolutely love it. I'd be terrible at reaction videos because I'd look pretty damn lost on the first listen. Anyway, thanks for the time you put in to doing this. Your music is quite cool too! I need to give the songs a few more listens, but I did appreciate very much hearing you let loose on the bass during one of the songs! Even had a nice bass tone, which few guitar-focused musicians ever pay attention to!

You can listen to an entire album at your own pace. The visuals don't distract from the music and vice versa. Vlad's rhythmic approach is actually simple. eighth note is equal to eighth note. The units of measure may change, but what keeps the buffer constant is the determination of the tempo on the eighth note.

I would absolutely love to hear a full orchestra play a rendition of this song... i can imagine the epic climbing strings during that midway build from quiet to world in flames wall of sound with the guitar... and then blasting winds for the vocals. vlad can stay on drums ;). its such an incredibly full sound with just 4 band members (tho theres some backings of course)

No Your hands mimicking the beats as you show what timing you hear, like showing the structure helps me visualize the timing of beats . That slow feel of the sliding guitar brought to mind an analogy like one whom stands in surf of a beach front. The waves crash, slam but the under pull as your feet sink, stumble as ones whole body slow, motion grips that balance is what the opening of the song feels of.

But after few more listens (without skipping it) it oddly became my favorite song by far, i find that weird... It's not the first time it happens to me with this band, i hated dip a sail, perennial and home back before, 3 of my favorites currently.

@@subzero2788 - I had the same "issue" with Home Back. I did the first listening when the album came out but for some reason I never paid much attention to it afterwards. Until they released the video. I didn't even remember it had that "jazzy" part in the middle or the low growl at the end and I'm still "kicking" myself to this day to have overlooked such a great song. : )

The more that I listen to this album, the more that I feel that it's a classical work in 11 movements. All the songs are through composed. There is not a strophic song amongst them. There are some kinda, sorta choruses in places like the repeating lyrics at the end of Wallflower but on the whole nothing repeats and it's a all about small themes that are reworked in different musical ways much like in classical music. John, keep up the good work. You always bring useful insights, particularly to those of us that aren't steeped in decades of metal knowledge.

Did you happen to see the interview with Eugene over at 'A&P reacts'? He mentions there that pretty much exactly what you are describing is something Vlad brought to their style of composition. One more tool that helps to turn a 'song' into an 'musical story' (not as in a 'musical-number' but more like an 'audio-movie').

Man, they use soooo many influences it's insane! But they sorta reapply it in a different way. Like the Cryptopsy reference or the Slayer Lombardo and Bostaph references. I’m so glad you are doing this. If you stop, I may have to fly over and take away your piano and keys until you finish. : ) Just two things I wanted to mention after having listened to the album several times (as a non-musician). This might be *the* album where Roman gets to do a lot of fun stuff. More often than not, in past albums Roman is doing a bunch of rhythm, but here he has a more prominent role in the Wallflower tracks. It’s just nice to hear him not be overshadowed by the other three, plus it adds something to the feel of each song. The second is the clean vocal harmonies in these track. I swear Tati’s using bits of the egyptian scale. It sounds so sweet and dark all at once. I love those moments. Thank you so much for doing this, for this album. Best wishes from the USA.

Love this format. The initial full listen provides more of a raw reaction, and the in-depth analysis points out aspects I wouldn't have thought about otherwise. Some of the theoretical stuff goes over my head but I appreciate it anyway. What an opener for an album!

Thank you. Yes, I like doing it this way too. Unfortunately youtube blocks many reaction videos if it detects the song (copyright) but I've found a few bands along the way that don't cause problems with copyright blocking (Jinjer being one). So knowing which bands do and don't enables me to know if I can do this format or not without risking the block.

Particularly for folks who are interested in the band, but maybe find the compositional complexity a tad offputting. Basically, I reckon you're providing a service here in helping folks get their teeth into the work of the band thru explanation of some music theory without going full-on Rick Beato deconstruction! LOL I'd still like to see Rick sit down & watch the Vortex video & Eugene's bass playthrough tho- would be entertaining to watch him chunking away on a baritone in dropA!! :D

love jinjer.... but desperately wish vlad would ease up on the blast beats.... they ruin songs for me and i'm afraid they will be a time stamp that will not age well and be relegated to classifying an era of music.... remember how every song had to have a long pretentious solo?... this will be blast beats in 1 or 2 decades... i think the formula is u are allowed to use them in every fourth song at most... that is my generous offer
