That thing with Cackletta's theme being in deep castle, to me it diverges so heavily after the first 7 notes to show just how far Fawful has come. Like yeah, it all started with Cackletta, so there's your nod to her of course. But it kinda shows that Fawful has grown up and become his own villain in a way where he wasn't before, and just how he's following in her footsteps while still being distinct and threatening in his own right At least that's what I got out of that after the 3 seconds of knowing that Cackletta's theme was hinted at here lmao

YES! THIS! I was just about to write this, almost word for word. It's most definitely a loose end reference to Cackletta's Theme- but it's purposely made that vague to fit Fawful's character development in that particular section of the game. Even more incredible, imo, is how the "(Inside Bowser)" version makes that callback much more apparent with the synth/chiptune-esque styling of the riff!! "Deep Castle" is my 3rd favorite track from BIS for all that reason stated. It's just so good + more VG villain themes need harpsichords.

A bit of credence to the idea of the unused track from Brawl being Forest’s Mushrooms is the fact Sakurai has gone on record saying he wanted to put Geno in Brawl, only for Square to turn him down.

Another official instance of Mario RPG music is in one of the Very Best of Yoko Shimomura albums. These are two albums of orchestrated arrangements of Yoko Shimomura music from throughout Square Enix's history, and the second one ("memoria!") has arrangements of "Beware the Forest's Mushrooms" and "Goodbye Geno... ~ Seeking Dreams Through the Window of the Stars" from Mario RPG. It's a rare instance of Square acknowledging the game before remake was announced and they're both great arrangements.

the Mario & Luigi series is one of the biggest reasons why I love video game music so much. All of the nods to older mario songs blew my mind! And made me have such a greater appreciation for how influential game music can be on my life! This is such a great showcase of a really underappreciated aspect of that series!! ALSO I had no idea the BiS remake had the Cackletta boss remix??? That is so cool, that is one of my favorite songs in that game holy moly!

two more fun callbacks! 1. the superstar saga battle theme reappears in paper jam as the battle theme at the start of the game before paper mario joins your party. 2. the superstar saga track "departure" that plays in the ending cutscene reappears in partners in time's ending cutscene.

Another Mario RPG and Superstar Saga musical connection is that the SMB1 underground remixes (From Inside the Earthen Pipe in Mario RPG cause there's a few in that game) both use the same drum fill when the drums begin to be introduced. I don't know if that was in an earlier Mario game than that, but my brain always attributes it to the Yoko Shimomura remixes.

One thing I noticed in Mario kart is that the Super Circuit ice world theme sounds like an altered version of Choco Mountain from MK64, and what’s even more interesting about this is that it mirrors how the snow theme from Mario 64 is an altered version of the slider theme which is in a similar style to Choco Mountain

Here’s another SMRPG secret not many people talk about: In Super Mario Advance 4 (specifically the World-e content), there’s a castle where you can view the collected e-coins you found within the levels and for some reason, they decided to do a weird stylized remix of the “Hello Happy Kingdom” song in it. The song is titled “World-e castle”!

I can only think of two fairly obvious ones for M&L - the Superstar saga battle theme is remixed in Paper Jam as the battle theme before Paper Mario joins the fray, -The Superstar Saga Remake fixes what many believe to be a glitch with the final Fawful battle, in which originally Popple's theme played, where now Cackletta's theme plays instead. Which adds further contiuity with the Bowser's inside story Dark Fawful theme.

Possible reason for the Mario Party reference: The composer for the first Mario Party was Yasunori Mitsuda, the guy behind most of Chrono Trigger's soundtrack. He worked for Squaresoft at the same time Yoko Shimomura did, so he could have done it as a possible nod to her work on the Mario series at the time.

Really cool video, love how comprehensive this is. A couple of musical quotes from Mario RPG that are shown here often gone undiscussed despite being super cool. A few extra ones that I think are neat: - Idataki Street DS (a Japan-only game in the Fortune Street series) ALSO remixed Hello, Happy Kingdom before! - The title theme for Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam has a few stacatto whistle repetitions that quote "Happy Adventure, Delightful Adventure" from Mario RPG, as a reference to how it's a crossover with the other main Mario RPG series. - "Memoriá! - The Very Best of Yoko Shimomura" was an official remix album by Square Enix made in 2014 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Yoko Shimomura's career in composing in the video game industry. Goodbye, Geno and Beware the Forest's Mushrooms from Mario RPG both had dedicated remixes, despite the album being published by Square soley. The version of Beware the Forest's Mushrooms made for the Mario RPG remake interestingly seems to use some elements of the Memoriá! arrangement of the song, which is pretty cool! I haven't heard the version of Goodbye, Geno they made yet, but I imagine they pulled from Memoriá! for that too.

hey! vinyl collector here, a vinyl release takes around 3-6 months to be completed, so the music is submitted way before its release on streaming, what probably happened is an earlier version of the song was submitted but changed for legal reasons when put on streaming but by the time it was changed the vinyl production had already started and it’d be way to expensive to change, but that’s just my guess, luv u. :))

A fact that may be known by the Mario & Luigi fans like me, it's that the tutorial theme of the series it's the 1-1 theme as we all know BUT, in Paper Jam, they remixed the version of this theme from Partners In Time, it actually was used once again in the Superstar Saga, if i'm correct, even the remake points out that it's a song from Partners In Time in the Soundtrack audio from the pause menu

In JP Forest Maze is called ハナチャンの森(Hana-chan no Mori). Hana-chan is the name of Wiggler in JP, meaning it's"Wiggler's Forest". Not sure if the name of the area or the name of the track itself takes priority in this case but the track is called 森のキノコにご用心, so the jury is out on whether it was the Mario RPG track. I'm inclined to say no just because the way music is ordered in this series even up to Ultimate has a very specific order so the groupong being related to M&L would make sense. Regardless of what the answer is, this was a good vid.

As someone who thinks knows all about Mario music, I was pleasantly delighted to find out I wasn't. I never knew the bonus theme from Mario Makers Mario bros bonus stage was the name registration music, always assumed it was an unused track from the original which I was kinda right. I do think that the Deep Castle bit is intentionally Cackletta's theme, considering that Fawful lacks his own theme in SS and he's taken over the Deep Castle in BIS.

Fawful _does_ have a theme in Superstar Saga. It's the panic theme that plays whenever you encounter him. In the remake, they even named the song "The Name is Fawful!" Fawful & Cackletta's battle theme is also mostly comprised of that song. It's the _Fawful_ part of _Fawful & Cackletta._ And it's why a remix of that battle theme plays in the remake fight against Dark Fawful.

I have a reference for when you do a Paper Mario episode. No one I've told believes me on this, but I'm convinced that "Mr. L, Green Thunder" is a heavily remixed version of the Luigi's Mansion theme. It's tough to make out, but each part in the former corresponds with a part in the latter, it's just being interpreted very loosely.

its very small but the track "short break from toad town" from bowsers inside story uses a little tune thats similar to the opening lick(? would you call it that) to "beware the forests mushrooms" at the 10 second mark of the song! ive never been entirely sure if it was intentional but i thought it was neat..

On the subject of musical references to other games in the Mario and Luigi series, I think it’s worth mentioning that the Superstar Saga Remake actually has a small handful of musical secrets of its own that weren’t in the original game, many of which replaced music in the original with brand new remixes of tracks from other Mario and Luigi games; - The Star ‘Stache Smash minigame gets a techno-styled remix of “Do It Now!”, which was one of the minigame themes from Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam - The Barrel and Chuckola Bounce minigames likewise get a techno remix of “Challenging Actions!”, which was the minigame theme from Mario and Luigi: Dream Team - The music that plays in tutorial sections in the game gets a remix of “Listen Up, Now”, which was the tutorial theme from Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, and was previously used in Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam For a more minor musical secret exclusive to the remake, if you enter a battle with the Virus’ in Woohoo Hooniversity and manage to defeat all of them at the same time by matching their colors, then you’ll hear a little jingle that remixes a portion of “Fever” from Dr. Mario

Minor comment, but the Fight Against Bowser theme in Mario RPG is my favorite Bowser battle theme of all time. As someone who has played most Mario games and is familiar with the track as it has appeared elsewhere in the series, this one in particular feels so much more dramatic than any other. Which is an interesting choice for a turn based game, and for the first boss of said game. I dunno, it's just so good...

There's a couple you missed. 1 is in Paper Mario. It's very brief and subtle, but you can hear the star piece theme in the cutscene after you beat Bowser, and the star rod pops out of him. And in 1 or more of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Mario&Luigi games, they'll play the 1st couple notes of the Forest Maze theme before turning into something completely different. That actually annoys me that they kept teasing me with it, but it never full-on becomes the theme.

Regarding the Mario Movie Bonus Level song... People had made edits of all the licensed music scenes that included the original songs from the soundtrack. But one of the weird ones was the final scene, because Bonus Level didn't line up exactly right. But we knew it had to be for that scene, because the beginning synced up so well. And wouldn't you know it? The Vinyl version of the song with Hello Happy Kingdom syncs up PERFECTLY. When we first heard of the difference, I made an edit, and it's very clear that the Vinyl version is the full version. No clue why the other releases didn't include that part. Yoko Shimomura actually owns a lot of the music she composed, so that's one theory for why it wasn't in any of the releases. Being included in the Vinyl version may have been a mistake. As for why there was a random Mario RPG song made for that scene in particular? I have my own theory. Perhaps Toad Town's motif was originally going to be Hello Happy Kingdom. But at some point they would've changed it to be Fossil Falls instead. It's what you hear when Mario & Toad first enter the town. It's similarly grandiose and orchestral, and it would work a lot better thematically than Fossil Falls did. So it would make sense that, in the final scene, when it's revealed Mario & Luigi are living in the Mushroom Kingdom, to use that same motif as part of that. But since they switched it to Fossil Falls, they had to scrap the Hello Happy Kingdom part, either due to not wanting to pay to use it, or just because it didn't make as much sense anymore. I'd assume after the Fossil Falls change they just never bothered to update Bonus Level to match.

I know there's already been a lot of Mario Kart music trivia to say the least but one thing I've noticed is that towards the end of Toad's Factory when racers exit the room with the sirens, the music restarts. As far as I know of this is the only case in the series where any part of a track other than a finish line restarts the music.

Something to note about the Mario Movie Hello Happy Kingdom reference is that the full song itself was meant to be played in the movie (at the end where instead they ended up playing Mr. Blue Sky), but while it definitely seemed like it was meant to be put there, it actually didn't sync up with the movie that well, But with Hello Happy Kingdom it now syncs up perfectly with the scene. So my theory is that it was meant to be in the movie, but then they realized Square owned that track, which led to them replacing the track altogether as it didn't sync well anymore, but then they Accidentally left it in the Vinyl version

Absolutely crazy one that I think was probably just coincidence is in the battle theme from Paper Jam: "Mixed Up Scramble." From 0:49 to 0:56, and 1:04 to about 1:10, the music resembles a bit of "Goodbye Geno" from Super Mario RPG. I definitely hear the similarities, and even overlaid them on top of each other once, and they play together so perfectly. But it's still so out there and random that I can't imagine it being intentional. It's different enough to not sound right.
