Mega Man 8 has always been viewed as the “oddball” of the Classic series- but has anyone ever sat down to examine why that is? I have! Just now. Listen to me talk about that. Right now. In this video.

Finding out that 8 was almost universally disliked was a real shocker for me considering everyone in my childhood friend group considered it their favorite out of the original series. I had gone through most of my life assuming everyone had equal love and appreciation for 8 only to find out the opposite when everyone praised the return to 8 bit in mega man 9. I am at the very least thankful that mega man and bass got made before capcom decided to can this brand of mega man.

People coming from the older ones didn’t like how compromised the game as a whole felt in comparison to past ones. Sure they had far more visual technology and such to work with, but at the same time the systems it was out on were heavily limited in how they could even use it. Stages were either really short or split into two sections. Often times stages felt like they repeated. And then if you only played the PS1 version, you were missing on content. These were all fairly big reasons why 9 and 10 went all the way back to NES visuals, though I would also say that those games missed a few of the fundamentals of 1-6 in their own way.

played the japanese version of the game, so the voice acting was audibly good to me and eletricial communication was on my mp3 playlist always. (even though I've no idea what they're talking, and also just being a mystery with the shop item usage). 8 was also my fav too as I found it "hard" to get back to the older megaman games apart from 7. The opening anime animation for 8 tricked me in thinking this is the quality of animation to expect from that ruby spears megaman series when I first chance upon it.

I love this game to death but yeah I remember the cutscenes looking really cool but the VA almost break the immersion. Thankfully the legacy collection includes the Japanese version which is a day and night difference I can't play this or X4s Western version ever again. The art style was awesome the sprites and animations were solid and it was fun albeit frustrating at times. I know the KZbinr isn't really a fan of the art style but if you grew up in the 90s this was the time anime was really taking off in the states so for us growing up during this time it was dope.

Its so strange, because when I first played this game on the anniversary collection I hated it. I played it multiple times, hated it every time. It was by far my least favorite mega man. Then, a few years back at this point, I played it on the legacy collection, and I had so much fun. I was in disbelief as I found myself seeking out every bolt just so I could play the game for longer. I still enjoy playing it and I now consider it one of my favorites. It just had a complete 180 out of absolutely nowhere for me and I am not upset about that at all.

I've had this same thing happen with games or entire genres even. I used to feel underwhelmed by de blob because I was obsessed with physics mechanics in games at the time and wouldn't engage with its actual merits, and this extended to a lot of games at that time. For a while I thought I hated turn based games because I wanted intense action and thought turn based was "fake" by comparison, but now some of my favorite games have turn based combat

I've been going through a sudden phase of me replaying Mega Man 8 again recently so it genuinely makes me glad to see other people also loving it for what it is One thing I absolutely love about it has to be the overall character design of the Robot Masters (Also Duo) of this game. They're all so simple yet complex at the same time that leads to them all scratching my brain a special way that makes me very happy, same goes for the art direction and all the silly little cutscenes Thank you very much for making this, very fun to watch, and I hope you have a good day! Edit/update on this that I feel like is good to mention since I'm watching this video again [6/7/2023]: I got my boyfriend to play through all of this game and he just finished it about an hour or so ago! He may not like the game (or the Mega Man series as a whole because he's not good at it), but it still makes me happy that he at least tried and I am very proud of him for playing it all the way through without quitting and never touching it again We now mutually bully each other by calling each others favourite games bad it's great

you should give the series a try, the games are really good id really recommend the first mega man x game for snes. that game has aged insanely well, the gameplay is great, the levels are well-designed, everything just clicks into place perfectly. it also has some of the best music and sound design ive ever heard in a video game. you can get it on modern consoles as part of the x legacy collection, which also includes x2, 3 and 4 (also great games). i might be a bit biased, since this was one of my favorite childhood games, and as such i have a huge amount of nostalgia for it, but i genuinely think x1 is one of the best games ever made, and i think its one every gamer should play through at least once.

I do spriting and code work for a fighting game celebration of the series called Mega Man Arena, and we added sword man about a year ago. I took that opportunity to look through sword's stages to see what could be made of them for a casual fighting game setting (it's a platform fighter so we try to incorporate stage hazards sometimes). Doing this made me really realize how messy and unexplored the hazards and mechanics in 8's stages were, BUT this also allowed me to explore them better, for example, taking the dungeon style, 4 challenges first half of sword's stage, and making it into basically the smash bros wario ware stage, where the stage can reform to recreate one of the 4 challenges in that section. It's hardly utilized in the real stage, but now we were able to fully flesh it out (and it honestly fits a fighting game better than the original game). So while 8 does have thousands of gimmicks it introduces and abandons in the same sentence, I've ended up really appreciating them, since it fits our game's format for stages really well.
@phase623
@phase623 Жыл бұрын
I also know more about the first half of sword's stage than anyone else in the world I'm pretty sure Did you know that basically every weapon can hit the floating ball in the tengu part of sword's stage except for specifically: Rush bike bullets Rush carpet bomb Arrow shot Flash Bomb Astro Crush And, for some reason, Water balloon Why these exceptions can't hit it but Flame Sword itself can, is beyond me I have been burdened with this knowledge and I must spread it to the masses.

The vibe that megaman 8 gives off, both in its art style such as in pixel art, ost and everything is simply just something unique about this game and in the franchise as a whole, and I really wish that more Mega Man fan-games tried to replicate the same feel that this one does instead of always doing the 8-Bit formula of the Nes games. It wasn't that the voice actors didn't have English as a first language, it was more Capcom hiring people that just spoke English and gave them no direction or context for anything. The people overseeing the production did not speak English, if I recall, so the actors were just doing the best they could with what they were given and very few takes. Anyway, great video. Mega Man 8 definitely feels sluggish to play, but I have so many good memories with it and love it to death.

really good video. I've always thought megaman 8 was pretty but as someone who got into megaman around when she was 12 and finally played them them all (except 7 I got distracted) last year I do not have the skill for it especially that second jump slide slide jump jump. I was genuinely curious why it was on your favorite games list in the Q&A video and I'm glad to know why. oh also I was worried see you in my dreams wasn't gonna make the cut for the video. glad to be wrong.

I think is super fun and it has a lot of things to give. Btw loved your video, and the way you edit and narrate things, thank you for working on this!!

>15 years later >21 year old I remember when I bought the Anniversary Collection in high school. :.) I returned the Gamecube version because the jump and shoot were backwards to how it was using an NES controller and you couldn't remap the buttons. For the record Mega Man 8 is dope as hell and is actually one of my favorites in the whole series. Absolutely LOVE the soundtrack along with Rockman & Bass's which has the same vibe going for it. In fact the whole reason I found your video was because while listening to the soundtrack, as I usually do, when I decided "I wonder if anyone has made videos about MM8" and here we are. Definitely give Rockman & Bass a play when you can. One of the hardest damn games if you play as Rockman though. Speaking on Mega Man 8 some more we can rewind back to 1997 (maybe 98) when I first played it at a party of all places. I can't recall the specifics other than I believe the house belonged to someone influential in our town (politics?) but hell if I remember that unimportant information because all that mattered was the guy's son had THREE+(maybe more?!) TELEVISIONS IN HIS ROOM WITH A DIFFERENT CONSOLE HOOKED UP TO EACH. It's funny because at the time all I could think about how cool that was and not about the inequality- oh well I'm just old and bitter now I guess. Anyhow there was Mega Man 8 on PS1. Fell in love with the game right then and there. Did all I could to save up money and eventually get the game for myself to play on my older brother's PS1. Thankfully he let me. A game developed in Japan in the late 1990s... Absolutely some dudes sleeping on the floor in the office to make this game. At least that made an impact on multiple generations and hopefully more to come. Game is a work of art. JUMP JUMP. SLIDE SLIDE.

I actually really love Mega man 8! So I loved listening to this video. Though if I were to make a change, I would really like Frost man and Aqua man to share weaknesses, similar to Burst and Slash from the previous title so that the two separate weakness chains can connect into one even one. I've never been of fan of two separate chains personally (why I wish Needle and Hard would swap weaknesses in 3). I originally used to think Tengu and Aqua should swap based on a Screen nuke seeming better for a flying enemy than a ground crawling weapon, I found out both of Tengu man's weaknesses are inspired by Tengu yokai mythology and didn't want to take away from that. Plus it serves him right for coming down just to taunt you anyway

MM8 holds a special place in my heart. The voice acting for me gives it identity too (not saying it's good). It just isnt the same expirence playing it with japanese VA. There was an interview with Ruth Marie jarman, the english dub VA for mega man on yt by colefam and its really wholesome and I recommend watching it. Overall, I agree with almost everything you've said about the game *except it being your favorite and your thoughts on clown man's stage, I still think you're crazy for that*

In my point of view, megaman began to evolve from the 7th game, it already seemed like something anime from that game, the villains, the soundtrack, the drawings, everything perfect

I don't know if I would call splitting robot masters and less castle stages as "evolution." I would even argue that the evolution existed from 1-4, then began to stagnate until the new ideas in MM8. The first 4 Mega Man games are way more different than people give them credit for.

Hello. I found your review of MM8 so refreshing. I, too, adore MM8 but it was so hard to find anyone who loved it for the same reasons I had until I saw your video. I really love your voice too. I had to literally search for the specific words "Mega Man 8 is good" to find your video. You've won me over as a subscriber. Yes, MM8 is good because of its aesthetics. The animations are so pretty and the soundtrack is dope. I don't understand why so many people overlook these two things so often. Thank you so much for appreciating the heart and sweat that came into making this game.

Not going to lie, I still consider the first two games to be the worst of the main classic series titles. 3 is where the series really hit its stride, 1 and 2 both felt like they were trying to figure out what worked and what didn't- 3 took the best of everything the NES games had to offer, and 4-6... Yeah, they started to overstay their welcome, but they used a formula that worked. 7 felt very stiff, though it was still an okay game. 8 is actually my favorite as well (yeah, the dub is terrible, but the gameplay is just so smooth and it makes very clever use of the different weapons). 9 and 10 were both good, but again, kind of felt like they were phoning it in by going back to the basics (seriously, he doesn't even have his charge shot?). I've yet to play 11.

The first MegaMan i played was 8, and i felt in love with it. After some time i played MegaMan&Bass, i loved the idea of being able to play with bass, also i had that feeling of replayability thanks to the 2 character mechanic. After some point i played the X saga and after a few years i played the classics, and yeah, they are quite an experience. But i cant help to thank the vibe, ambiance, the feeling of using some of the power ups and destroying some of the stage things and enemies in 8 and m&b. They really put the heart in the game, i feel 8, X4 and megaman 2 are my top 3 favorite megaman games by a long shot

Banger video as always!!! I have a soft spot for 8 so the plot twist where you loved it was a pleasant surprise even though I was completely fine with the criticism section too😂 Megaman and Bass is so fun, I consider it one of my favorites of the classic series!!! You gotta play it 👀 I feel like if you like 8, you’ll really like MM&B!! Also take this info with a grain of salt, but I’ve heard that the voice actors for 8 were given scripts that still had the Japanese names for the characters which is what led to the infamous “W-megaman” stutter from Light, I guess he was about to say Rockman 😂

Brazilian here... Mega Man 8 along with 6 are my favorites... Here in Brazil, there was a lot of piracy so, without knowing it and wanting to, I played the Japanese version of the 8 first... When my friend and I saw the game for the first time... We were fascinated... The graphics... the music... the gameplay... yeah... even though I've played every game up to that point... frankly speaking I didn't have any difficulty playing it... for me the first time I played it I took control, Mega Man was already part of my body... Yes... I was VERY addicted to games at that time and for me those gameplay difference things didn't even cross my mind... it was a new game and a new challenge... simple as that!! For me this game is a work of art!! Always was and always will be... Without a doubt the most beautiful game graphically speaking and for me the most fun of all... along with 6!! I loved your video and I already subscribed to the channel!! A kiss from Brazil!!
