If you want to get serious you`ll at least need a flyback transformer from and old TV. That with the correct sized tubes to wind the air cored coil(s), caps, cables, mounting board, mains cable and a few other things. You do really need to stand back though. My last effort had plasma sparks up to 3 feet long. Then the neighbours complained about interference up to 4 houses away. No sense of fun or adventure. Mind you, if you stood too close that one would kill dead easy. Made your hair start to stand up from about 8 - 10 feet away.

Thanks for this video, it helped me put mine together. Despite the Chinese instructions, the circuit board was well marked, but your explanation of how the Slayer Exciter works let me figure out a few minor adjustments I needed and where a bad solder joint I'd made was. Oh, and what the damn neon lamp was for, so I didn't go nuts trying to figure out where it went.

soldering is real simple it’s not hard and not really hard to mess it up

practice is the best teacher. You will get a feel for it. Main thing is hot iron. Heat the area to be soldered with the iron Apply solder and watch how it behaves. It should immediately flow around the area. If it sputters, bunches up and whatnot, the area isn't hot enough. Once it flows, pull the solder away, then the tip. In general aside from a short, even a bad solder joint will las long enough to work.

For anyone who can't get it to work, specifically, those that are seeing only LED2 turn on, try replacing the red primary coil with a wire with fewer turns. Newer versions of this kit say to use 2-3 turns, but try trimming it down from 3 to 2, and if that still doesn't work, from 2 to 1 turn. I had 3 turns, then cut it down to 1 turn and it worked with no other changes.

Mine too doesn't work. It barely makes the NE2 glow and even then it has to be touching the middle of the coil. The red LED doesn't light. And yes I've tried another red LED touching the terminals with the polarity the other way around and no dice. The heat sinks get hot 200 mA at 18V And I measured 5.6 MHz.

Did you make sure to get the two transistors in the correct locations? They are different part numbers and need to be installed correctly. Other than that, maybe test the transistors to make sure yours are working ok.

Your digital display has a heater wire from left to right to heat the gas and aet the gas ionize at a lower voltage during normal operation. If you have a display wired properly, get your eye accustomed to the dark and look at the center of the digits with as few digits lit up as possible. You'll see a faint red glow from the wire across the display from left to right.

Hi, I ordered the kit, which came without circuit diagram, so I have put it together using the pictures. With the coil itself: does it matter which way up it goes ? Also, with one end, it’s just left in the air above, and the other end, is it soldered to the one hole placed at the centre of where the tube sits ?

It doesn't matter which way up the coil goes, but the hole you use is the small one near the corner, just outside the circle markings for the coil location. You'll see me install it at the 6:50 mark in the video.

Mine is not working too. Looks that the enamel has not been correctly removed. I used however a lighter to burn the tips of the coil wire. At the end, yes the white LED is not lightning up... and I cannot see any oscillation into the primary by using an oscilloscope. Is that the primary coil wire soldered in the right direction?? I used to do exactly like the photography as I cannot read Chinese.

Any idea how to trouble shoot this thing? The instructions on the one I got which look exactly like yours said the + and - terminals on one of the LED's was reversed. So, I did correct that after testing it with a multimeter and seeing it light up when the correct electrode colors were matched. However, it still isn't turning on with about 5 different power supply tries, everything from 5V 2A to 20V 1A. Unfortunatley I don't have a perfect 15-24V and 2 A DC supply. Either the voltage is a little low and amperage high, or voltage is high and amperage is slightly low. I'd figure at least the LED's would light up. I don't know if the 1 wrap wire needs to be in a certain direction or perfectly close together. I've checked all solder joints, ran through it with connectvity and hear the buzzing noise on my multimeter, just can't get the dang thing to power on at all!

Solution: Use a very hot soldering iron on the insulation of the enameled wire of the coil. That is the grounded end of the coil and so you can't expect the voltage to break through the insulation.

BURN the enamel insulation with a match or cigarette lighter, not a soldering iron (that is wrong way). Then sand the wire slightly, clean it, add flux and THEN solder it in.

Good reference video. I'm not an electrician and have some questions... I used a 24v 500mA wall wart and it worked, even though it was supposed to be a minimum of 2A! How hot did your heat sinks get? Mine could burn my skin within 3 minutes, they where so hot! How long did you let yours run without restarting? How long without a fan do you think the tesla coil can run, before it fails? thanks.

Yeah, the heat sinks do get really hot! I think the circuit is as bare bones as possible and so won't really like long operation..... I'm not sure how long it will run with a fan, but as long as the heat sinks are cool, I guess it should run indefinitely.

I bought a 12v 30mm fan and rigged it directly, attached and covering, the inside of both heat sinks. So now I had to order some O rings, because of the noise of the vibration it makes, is conflicting with the sound of the tesla, while playing music. But this stabilized the heat problem, so far, where I had it on for 10 minutes. I didn't want to take a chance on burning it out yet, until I play my guitar through it...

No Red LED . . . Make sure to use a very hot soldering iron on the insulation of the enameled wire of the coil. That is the grounded end of the coil and so you can't expect the voltage to break through the insulation.

Aspirin is the best solution for removing the enamel. Just put the wire on the tablet and warm it by mean of the soldering iron. The acid removes instantly the enamel.

Arturo Nunez resistors don't have any specific direction they need to face. Electrolytic capacitors do though (the black cylindrical things that came with the kit)

Please help me. When I plug it in with a 24v 1A adapter only the blue LED turns on. It doesn't make sparks or turns on the neon light. It does nothing. I burnt the coating on the secondary ground connection, checked the polarity on everything and checked the MOSFETs. Everything is in its place but it doesn't work. What could be the problem?

I've gotten 3 of these things from 3 different companies and no matter what I do I cannot get the to run. 0.3 A running, no corona, no red light, only about 0.63V across the LED. The 350t coil shows continuity albeit with some resistance. The resistance was consistent across all 3 coils. What the heck is going on. :(

Mine did not come with the white thermal grease for the transistors, so I added a little fan to cool it down, I won't use it for music anyway.

I'm not sure about the glue stick? You mean the white paste? That would be used between the transistors and heat sinks. I used my own solder to make the kit.

If you have to ask this, I think you shouldn't play with anything that creates sparks. The current rating on a power supply is the maximum current it *can* deliver, not the current it *does* deliver. You can use a 24V/1000A supply and it will still be fine.

The LED's light up on mine, but that it... The soldering has been done right and the input voltage is 19V (which should be enough). I though the biggest issue was one of the legs missing threads, but it doesn't even seem to work :(

Sairax Official It's just a cold cathode fluorescent tube. You can find them as the backlight in almost any non-LED backlit LCD screen.

Hi! Some remarks (I hope). The printing of pins of FET is wrong: reversed. Please see 80NF70 pinout OR compare the schematic with PCB, where the "gate" is connected to Audio input (in reality the source - as on schematic). It does not make any problem if you build it, as you need to place it on heatsink, but maybe misleading if you want to debug.. Second. I would not recommend changing the coupling capacitor to 10uF as the arc is not capable to give bass sounds back clearly. It just distorts them ! Third, some facts with my measurements of four modules... The current consumption is about 0.6A (not affected by modulation). The resonance frequency is around 4.6Mhz but emits some electric noise up to 100MHz (checked with spectrum analyzer). The temperature of heatsink goes up to 70deg celsius in the first 5 minutes of operation..

I don't think it will kill you, but it wouldn't be pleasant to touch so I would avoid touching any part of the circuit while it is turned on.

NFM...Have you checked on what frequency this operates..Could somewhere from LONG wave to MEDIUM wave (AM band) The oscillator carrier could land on somebody's favo(u)rite AM station. The arcing tip could be producing "hash"... noise over a very wide band. The odd burst wouldn't be much of a problem but running continuously as a speaker could wipe out a large piece of band, giving the FCC or whoever is your local controlling body, plenty of time to trace you down..That's when the fun really starts!
