As Opeth fans we usually take it for granted that open minded people (musically) will like it for the same reasons (including myself) we do, however this isn't always the case. I'd suggest you the latest works. Opeth has turned his style more oriented towards pure Progressive Rock without harsh vocals. Burden, Windowpane, Universal Truth probably are more enjoyable for you than other where the balance between growls/clean vocals, heavy riffs/mellow harmonies are more present (the best songs for me).

Honestly it's so refreshing to see a video breakdown of the production side of a song. Good review and glad you liked the song. As a fellow fan of the Abbey Road sound, there's a band I think you would enjoy looking into (in case you haven't already) is CAN, specifically Ege Bamyasi, Tago Mago album. Hope comment finds you and hope you're doing well.

Appreciate you going out of your comfort zone with this one! It took me a long time to get comfortable with the growling but I kept listening to more Opeth because I love the atmosphere in their songs and the dynamic transitions between beautiful folky acoustics and heavy metal. Their songs always take you on a journey kinda similar to what I experience when listening to Tool. Now they've grown out to be one of my favorite bands. They do have quite a bit of songs without growling, I'd recommend Face of Melinda, A Fair Judgement and Windowpane. I also think songs like The Drapery Falls and Harlequin Forest are a bit more balanced in terms of vocals. They definitely eased me into it more. Opeth completely steered away from death metal and ventured into '70s progrock for their last few albums. Cusp of Eternity, Sorceress and Svekets Prins (in Swedish) are good examples of this. Hope you'll give them another shot some time and perhaps end up enjoying their music as much as I do now :)

I'll give it another shot for sure. I can really appreciate the musicianship and the arrangement of it all, I think I just have to get used to the growling. But it seems like they were very versatile if they were going from black/death metal to progrock. Those are the best kind of musicians imo.

Though almost half of Opeth’s songs don’t contain growls/screams it’s a shame to miss out some incredible musicianship because of harsh vocals. Songs like The Moor, Ghost of Perdition(live from Roundhouse Tapes would be pretty impressive), The Drapery Falls, The Night And The Silent Water, Nectar are brilliantly composed but have a lot of growls in them. Of course Opeth’s softer stuff isn’t less good - songs like Face Of Melinda, Moon Above Sun Below, Eternal Rains Will Come, Dignity are really beautiful as well.

Really happy you chose to react to this of all Opeth songs. They fuckin shred and like many are saying their earlier work is heavier/newer is more progressive. I really think you should check out Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, absolute masterpiece and the guy behind the band mainly, Steven Wilson, is a prog god. Perhaps the best to ever do it. Also when it comes to heavier vocals like this, I see you like rap as well and I envision screams similar to the most mumbly of "mumble rap", like you dont listen to carti for the lyrics his voice is almost like an instrument or a compliment to the beat, you know? same concept with screams imo. Although opeth is one of the few bands who you can actually really hear what the lyrics are through the screams but nonetheless I treat it as such and it's more for the ambiance and to add on to the instrumentation. Sick channel!

Thanks for the support! I've wanted to check out Porcupine Tree for a while, I may be doing a reaction to them soon & I'll check the song mentioned. Great point about the vocals, I can definitely see the comparison. Next time, I'll try to switch my perspective to that. Rock on!

If you'd like to hear some bass in Opeth, try "To Bid You Farewell" off their "Morningrise" record. They had a fretless bass at the time.

Actually I am amazed that not more reactors have this kind of first reaction to Opeth (not really, most like to emphasize the positives, and some like to play to their audience). I am a huge Opeth fan and didn't like the harsher parts as much in the beginning. I'm used to it now and can appreciate it more. Maybe it'll be similar for you.

@@samuraikaito I had to listen to their albums in reverse order since the newest ones are clean vocals. After wanting more, I dived into the rest even though I hated growling. Now I enjoy it all... for Opeth only though. Anyway, please check out my comment on your 7empest reaction. That's where I mention the clean vocal albums. Your honesty is appreciated. Keep trying if you can though. If I could do it at 71, you can do it at your young age. 😉 Now I'm gonna really hit the sack.

< Some songs on Deliverance, like the song 'Deliverance,' were inspired by an event that happened to Peter’s girlfriend. She and a couple of her friends were kind of held hostage by some crazy guy. He locked them inside his apartment, they were partying or whatever, and he started cutting himself and telling them that he’s going to kill them and stuff like that. It didn’t end badly -- they got out of there -- but the guy was obviously some type of lunatic, so that inspired that lyric for ‘Deliverance’ >

I'm going to suggest Steven Wilson "Routine" , and also his former band Porcupine Tree " Anesthetize" Live....no growls , but he is also a producer ( including this Opeth album).., sound engineer ( he has been hired to remix dozens of classic albums by bands like Yes , Tears For Fears , and King Crimson to name but a few)

Opeth is an acquired taste if you are not into the style. But once you get it, it's a masterpiece.
@notanonymous7737
@notanonymous7737 3 жыл бұрын
Opeth is definitely an acquired taste, the duality of the heavy death metal and the more mellow acoustic parts are hard for many people to get into (though it’s the stuff I love most lmao). Another thing is that they like to repeat a lot of their riffs and sections, though I interpret this more as letting their music “breathe”. Glad you gave this music a chance though, might even come to enjoy the heavy parts and vocals if you stick with it lol. I’d reccomend their mellow songs from their record Damnation or their more recent albums if you wanna get more into them because they’re very much worth sticking with imo

Yeah it's weird how that happens, sometimes things don't resonate with you until later. Who knows, maybe I'll love this band in the future. But you're right, it's easy to dismiss things based on how you associate them, making it harder to be open minded about it. Perhaps I did that going into this video, but next time I'll try to just enjoy it for what it is. Thanks for the support!

All good man! I still appreciate the recommendation. Hope I didn't let you down with my reaction (some people are a little upset it seems). I've seen a lot of comments mentioning their softer stuff. I still think this was incredible in terms of arrangement and structure, just not my cup of tea. Familiar with Tubular Bells - that's the exorcist song right? Dude played all of the instruments in the album at like 19 years old. That's a good one, I love the live performance video. Only know the title track though, if you have any other songs feel free to lmk! I'd like to say, it's funny that song was used in a horror movie. When I listen to it, it gives me such a uplifting feel but I feel like most people associate the main riff as "scary" due to its use in The Exorcist.

Right then i'll have to dig a little deeper, you haven't disappointed not even a bit, sitting through this track, as awesome as it is, while not liking heavy growls is literally a chore.. great reaction! How about this, i'll name 3 songs, if you heard them all i'll take a seat back and follow other ppls requests ;) 1. Clutch - electric worry (its a cover so if you're into original materials check The regulator instead) 2. Melvins - a history of bad men ( personally this band blows my mind.) 3. Black sabbath - hand of doom ( man its hard to request one sabbath song :/ )

@@samuraikaito That is not what the band is about. This song here is the essence. Too high level for you and you're too locked in your 'comfort zone' to want to explore this sound. You had a problem with everything imaginable from the vocals to the dissonant riffs (which is literally what makes this band) to the mix being muddy which is the first time I've heard anyone describe Steven Wilson's mix as "muddy".
