One thing I've always noticed about Opeth is that their lyrics deal with dark themes, but they never glorify them. They're always painted anxiously, and negatively. There's a real genuine sorrow within them. Their lyrics are often intentionally hard to interpret, too, in order to keep it meaningful to each individual listener. It's also important to remember that with bands like Opeth and Porcupine Tree, the lyrics are often from someone else's perspective and they're not necessarily good. Porcupine Tree has an album called "In Absentia", and most of the lyrics are from the perspective of serial killers, the idea of "In Absentia" referring to their souls being absent.

"the lyrics are often from someone else's perspective and they're not necessarily good" Good example is The Devil's Orchard. When it came out people made a bit of a big deal of the "God is dead" line, but in the context of the song it's a person wandering who is hearing voices tell him that, they are not the words of Mikael himself.
@RohannvanRensburg5 жыл бұрын
@@louzermonster7323 Oh absolutely. Mikael even stated that's not some philosophical claim, it's part of the concept. The end line is the giveaway -- throughout the song it's stated in some sort of triumphant way, but at the end of the song it sounds bone-chillingly unsettling. They're easy to misinterpret.
@RohannvanRensburg5 жыл бұрын
@@truedarklander Mikael is an agnostic/atheist, and some of his lyrics reflect that, but again, they're never really stated in a defiant way. I don't respect the lyrics Mikael writes with Bloodbath, but he has stated that the entirety of it is tongue in cheek.

@Héctor Bernal My understanding is that atheism and agnosticism deal with separate things: Atheism with belief and agnosticism with knowledge/certainty. So typically there are two types on opposing sides of the topic of god. An agnostic atheist is someone who doesn't know whether or not a god exists (agnostic), but doesn't believe/is not convinced of the existence(atheist). This is pretty common on the side of the nonreligious/nonbelievers. A gnostic theist on the other hand believes (theism) AND is certain/claims to, or does, know a god exists(gnosticism). The differentiation is the 'a' in front of those words. 'a'theism vs theism and 'a'gnosticism vs gnosticism; nonbelief vs belief, nonknowledge/noncertainty vs knowledge/certainty(or claims to knowledge)

My interpretation of this song is as follows: This is a murder (by drowning) committed by an insane person who has a warp sense of deliverance/salvation. The song is taken from the perspective of the murderer during the perpetration of the murder. “Your salvation is found in a sinners deed” He believes that he is bringing salvation to the victim by killing them. The salvation is for the victim and he is the sinner doing the deed (or that the deed he is committing is a sin). It’s possible that he sees them as unclean/evil/sinners that requires saving. Also, by doing his own sinner’s deed (murder) he is also bringing salvation to himself. “Deliverance, thrown back at me…. Laughing at me” However, after the murder he realises that salvation and deliverance will never be his because the devil (his insanity) is guiding the way. The devil/insanity is tricking him. By his sinner’s deeds he can never be saved. Cheers!

@@musicmademejester Moon Above, Sun Below is such a criminally underrated song. I slept on it completely until seeing them at the tail end of the Sorceress tour and they were playing some stuff they don't usually include in their sets to shake things up a bit, including that. The acoustic cover of Napalm Death's "You Suffer" was also excellent. :P

Opeth are the my favourite. They have dark and light and you appreciate both styles just as much as they sit next to each other. Their music is evolving as they grow and you can always discover more. They have never been a band where you can expect something. Their sound is from left of field which keeps your thoughts guessing.

No matter how many times I listen this song I always get goose bumps. An Opeth fan from Morocco since 2002, the year of Deliverance. Cheers !

I Like Opeth a lot, Mikael is very smart and funny and always a riot when he talks to his fans a shows ! I'm 60' and I love that he is into and appreciates Classic Prog like King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant and more and all the Classic Hard Rock/Metal bands like Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and more ! I Love Mikael's normal voice, very pleasant to listen to, but not a fan of the currant speed metal growl voice at all, I know it's to add presence to the part of the song at the time but .... Well Opeth is very unique Prog metal band !! : D

Really like how unbiased you are in your reactions my favorite albums are concept albums, speaking about concept records please consider the next video idea to be “my chemical romance” it’s a band that got unfairly discounted because of the label “emo” along with being called devil worshipers, vampires and suicide cult by religious conservatives or parents who didn’t understand the music and the art, now critics think of their music as some of the best rock to come out of the 2000s, it would be really interesting to see what you think of the band as you are very openminded christians.

"That was the song that got me into them." Everyone has that same look in their eyes when they think about their first introduction to the band. It's an art, it's an experience. It shapes you if this is the first band of their kind that you listen to.

I really like you guys now... such a great change...very open, and accepting of all views and directions these bands go. And way to learn...always adds to understanding. I am not a big growl fan. Opeth however are so talented musically. ..man, the production is so clean.. and the changes in vocals works,,,it's almost an exhale when the singing comes in,,,hahahahaha, I'm older now, bless.

11:50 song: devil guide the day pastor: nice
@roberthoughton71275 жыл бұрын
For sure. The protagonist was acknowledging that this act was being lead by the Devil. That’s a Biblical truth. John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” Not to mention those harmonies were awesome!

Condolences for your loss. I can see you clearly here in Iceland. I have only seen one other of your videos, the one you listened to Death together, i admire how a pastor does this awesome thing with his son , being open minded and trying to see where he is coming from instead of being all righteous and condemning him for listening to "the devils music" because that would be so easy. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him (psalm 103:3) So rock on and God bless

Really love your breakdown of these heavy songs. you should really check out a song called "Apparition" by Swedish technical death metal gods Spawn of Possession. Musicianship is out of this world and it has a crazy story also.

It's really refreshing to see how open minded you are to your sons interests! I'm sure it means alot to him and that it strengthens your relationship. We should all respect each other more! After all, we're only human, and we're just doing the best we can in life. I'm an atheist and I respect you.

Very cool to see this! I'm a Christian who listens to stuff that I don't always agree with...as long as you use discernment and understand what is and isn't applicable to how to live your own life (and are old enough for said discernment), then I don't see an issue. Oddly enough, my faith also grew tremendously at the same time as I got into this music, when I was in college! Quite possibly because it was important to me to have answers about these darker parts of life, so I was both getting into the music AND looking deeper into my Christian faith simultaneously.

I highly recommend Theocracy. They are a Christian band. I'm not sure of the exact genre, but they tend to have long songs with cool instrumental breaks and solid theological content. I have a few specific songs in mind. Easter, which tells the resurrection story mostly from the viewpoint of the disciples; Mirror of Souls, which is technically a 3 song trilogy but it's also all one song (reminds me of the Trinity), and it tells the story of salvation in a very interesting and creative way; I AM, which reminds me of the book of Job because the song is God telling us who He is; As the World Bleeds, which is about how we as humans make messes of God's perfect creation and then we have the nerve to blame God for the problems we cause for ourselves; Nailed, which is about the Protestant reformation.
