To me this version of The Trees with the intro and how it bleeds into Xanadu, it’s the best version of both songs ever.

I agree with that Jim. Also, the live concert footage of Xanadu gets me every time, superb performance.

Man I’ve heard 2-3 professional classical guitar players cover Broones Bane and none of them sound as good as Alex. Impeccable phrasing on that performance!

Exit Stage Left not only has the best version of The Trees (with the Broon's Bane intro) but also the best version of La Villa Strangiato, which contains arguably, Alex Lifeson's best recorded live guitar solo.

I love Broon’s Bane!! Like @jimtatro said, That is the best intro ever to The Trees!! I wish there some more of his classical/acoustic solo stuff out there! Great reaction! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Broon's Bane. Way back in the mid 80s, when I was about a year or so into playing the guitar, I found the book, "The Guitar Techniques of Rush" in a record store and it had the music and tablature for this piece in it. The piece isn't too hard to learn, and that was probably my introduction to finger-style pieces--and one of my stepping stones to taking up the classical guitar. Incidentally, Alex had about a year's worth of classical guitar lessons in his late teens, and this piece always reminds me somewhat of some of the guitar pieces by Fernando Sor (a guitarist from the classical era) and some of the early romantic classical guitarists. It's almost like an Etude for classical guitar. Incidentally, one thing that Alex does really well on Broon's Bane, is bring out the separate melody lines. Of course, that's how he heard it in his head, but so many guitarists will play a finger-style piece like this as just a succession of arpeggios without any real distinct melody at all.

You mention "cats who like Rush". I remember reading an interview with Geddy a long time ago where he says that he rarely puts on Rush records at home but when he does, his cats leave the room when Cygnus X1 comes on. One thing about guitar players "back in the day".... there used to be a thing with guitar players where they all worked on a unique and distinctive sound and a lot of them really worked at becoming proficient at multiple versions of the guitar. Probably inspired by Steve Howe, Alex learned how to play classical guitar. And like Steve Howe, recorded some solo classical and acoustic pieces for the live albums. "Hope" is an acoustic piece that is on a live DVD later on.

Another ESL highlight to be sure! I remember when the boys would rally at some burger joint parking lot. Steve's car had the best sound system. We would blast this as we dined (on honey dew, LOL). Bringing back some memories.

Alex Lifeson is REALLY just as good of a guitarist as Geddy is a bassist and Neil is a drummer. He can literally play any style, expertly, AND sometimes in the context of one song, and make it work seamlessly. Not too many that can achieve that, much less for 40+years with the same AND only two other musicians/bandmates.🎸🥁🎤🎹🤘🖖✌️
@Mike805282 жыл бұрын
That's really my argument as to why all three of them are GOATs at what they do. You can nit pick, but at the end of the day what could any of them NOT play? Then take into account what they created and case closed...

I saw these guys in Dallas on my16th birthday, just to hear these songs takes me back to that time, and yes, how they were blended with "Xanadu" in the album, was how it was played on stage.

Love your cat! 😻 You really should have done "Broons Bane" -> "The Trees" -> "Xanadu" as a marathon. Ah well. Geddy's bass tone on "The Trees" is so deliciously chonky! Just like Justin's cat. 😆

Exit Stage Left is one of my all-time favorite live albums. I had it, Joe Satriani's Surfing with the Alien, and Weird Al's In 3D on repeat cycle during a 10 hour drive to New York. There was not one boring minute of that trip.

Their "Snakes and Arrows" album has a solo song from Alex called "Hope". It's played on a 12-string acoustic guitar and is like Broon's Bane in that it's a short acoustical solo (I also think it's the best one he's done and is very beautiful). I wish they had put more of those little gems onto their studio albums. He likes to do those acoustical numbers and unwinds before and after concerts by playing the acoustic.
@allenlocke19352 жыл бұрын
"Hope" is a beautiful piece! It's hard for me to listen to with out repeating it a few times. For most of us Rush fans , Alex knows how to stir the soul. What more could you want from a musician?

I knew you would like broons bane. That intro and those two songs back to back is really impactful. I’m not sure your cat is a huge Rush fan seemed a little disinterested. Just sat there and blinked her eyes. Another great reaction

As you probably have already heard, Alex shreds on this live version of LaVilla Strangiato
@toddc282 жыл бұрын
Broon's Bane is really a separate song from The Trees. On ESL it's played before The Trees. It's 1 of 3 Alex Lifeson acoustic guitar pieces that were recorded live but never recorded for a studio version. The other acoustic songs are "O'Malley's Break" on the Time Machine Tour (2011) and "Peak's Repose" on Clockwork Angels Tour (2013)

Back in the day Alex would have his acoustic on a stand and would play it. Nowadays he just uses his electric guitar to make that Acoustic sound.

Justin the one thing about Rush there live performance is 100% better then there albums. Ive havent missed a tour since Grace Under Pressure. What sucks you cant ever appreciate them because you never saw them live. i dont care how many live videos you watched its not even close there in the top 5 best live bands ever. you need to watch I'm sure people told you watch Beyond the Lighted Stage. you will enjoy it tells you pretty much everything about them. like your videos. Your honest in your opinions. The more you listen to them you will always hear a something different. At least you figured out that Geddy is playing rythm guitar in Passage to Bangkok. thats why if you watch the live video he is using the double bass and electric guitar.

Broons is the reason I bought an ovation / adanis / Kaman acoustic, the engineer in me had to have a guitar designed by a helicopter designer. Although bowel back guitars are a pain to play sitting, nothing to do with song other than history maybe for you
