Musician reacts to BAND-MAID Yolo

Although officially "alone" is their first self-written song, Kanami (lead guitar) part-wrote YOLO before Band-Maid existed. I feel like she really shines in it, in the pre-chorus, second verse and - above all - the bridge. Band-Maid are known for always making the second verse different (other bands do this too, of course), and this was the early days of that. Maybe that's why it didn't work for you, though it did for me. I love the atmosphere of the whole song and feel it gets overlooked too much as one of their great songs.

I went to Kippy's Coco-Cream shop in tokyo with Miku & Homer Simpson & the conversation went like this, "Po, Do'h, Po, Do'h Po, Po, Do'h, Po, Do'h Po, Doh, Do'h Doh', Po, DO',H! Mmmm strawberry pigeon glazed donuts".🤤 You kinda had to be there :)

There's an amazing live version of this out there and you can just tell that Kanami loves playing this song. She just grooves nonstop and sings along with the crowd. I think she wrote the song before Band-Maid formed so it probably has a special place in her heart.

Can never go wrong with CLASSIC BAND-MAID. Straight forward Rock. Has all elements of what I like. No other current band has an impact on me like the Awesome BAND-MAID does. Peace.

The rhythm guitarist, Miku, also sings lead on some songs. Beauty and the Beast and Sayonakidori are two songs where she sings lead. The song Freezer is an excellent example of trading vocals between Miku and Saiki.

Shh🤫 don't tell anyone but i said i prefer Mincho's old guitar tone & Ryan Mear said even tho you can get any sound out of a PRS he preferred it too :)

@@GaryHolloway-810 The switch from Marshall to Mesa Boogie amps probably changed the tone more than the guitars in my opinion. Using the same amp it is easier to dial in the tone you want from two roughly similar (humbucker style) guitars (even with different pick-ups). Very much harder getting the same tone from two very different amps though.

@@GaryHolloway-810 To be honest, I was kind of bummed out when she switched to PRS because she’d literally just gotten her signature model Addictone and I loved what she was doing with it. But I guess artists’ tastes change and I also love her current sound, it’s just different. I would like to see Addictone guitars get publicity and fame though.💪🏻🤘🏻

I'm not a musician so my next statement may be totally BS. In the section (second verse) where you questioned Akane's double kick is what I would call contrapuntal or counterpoint where bass, guitar and drums are playing totally different melodies. Back in my day say '67 through the 70's that would be something typical in classic progressive music as a result of many bands having bassists and drummers that came from a jazz background. Notwithstanding the truth of my statement my mind still boggles that Saiki manages to perfectly maintain the actual melody through that section when they perform live. Just as an aside, the only time I have actually heard the term contrapuntal used was in an interview with Jack Bruce that went with Creams 1968 farewell concert when he described their playing as neo-contrapuntal.

Thx for the lovely reaction. :) This song is not only "early on" in their career, but is actually one that Kanami wrote prior to Band-Maid's formation. I think it really presages well what the band has been able to do since.

For 'Thrill' watch the original MV not the live version - just to witness how the world first met them! 'Alone' is the first song totally written and composed by the band that was released - its a real banger! Can't wait for 'Gion-cho' too - It's my favourite song by them (at the moment at least)!

Hey man! I would very much recommended that you listen to Gergo Borlais Zildjan Live. The drumming and groove on that recording is absolutely off the charts. The intro is almost 2 minutes long, but it’s worth the wait!

I'm enjoying watching your reactions to Band Maid. You have gone through many Band Maid songs. But here is a good news for you. You have more their songs to enjoy! I would recommend "PLAY" if you like bass line and "REAL EXISTANCE" that is their early period. Let's enjoy their music more!

Don't you think, Steve, that "pop rock" is more like Huey Lewis and the News, etc., and Band-Maid, especially YOLO, is hard rock? In any case, Yolo, to me, is a masterpiece -- like Daydreaming, Puzzle, and many, many more. Thx!
