Fun fact about the "Dark Souls III" theme - before the game's official release, this song was supposed to be the theme of a powerful tyrant you fight early on who was originally meant to be the final boss, but ended up being swapped out for another theme and became the main menu music instead. This character is directly responsible for MUCH of the tragic events that take place in the lore of the game and all who are affected by it, so it's still a very fitting track overall.
@violetevergarden94582 күн бұрын
Minor correction. This is the alternate main theme for Dark Souls III. It was long ago pulled out of the game files by people who dug into them and you can listen to it on KZbin. Just search for "Old King of the Eclipse". The difference is in the arrangement and it is not as sacred as the original main theme of Dark Souls III.

In the Abyss Watchers piece, during the first phase of the fight the vocals consist of multiple people/choirs, while the second phase has a single lone voice. In the fight the first phase there are multiple abyss watchers, in the second only one. They have a lot of subtle storytellings like this in all of their osts, which elevates the music from Fromsoft's games so much. Other example is a fight in which the first phase you fight against a mute prince, while the second phase has dialogue, and the music also has no choirs in the first phase, they only kick in in the second phase

To add onto a number of comments, some of the fan translated lyrics of Slave knight Gael's theme really demonstrates that Dark Souls 3 is a story of spite towards the inevitable end regardless of who this resistance hurts. The fight against Gael is currently the final foe of the Dark Souls trilogy and consists of a duel between two nameless undead in the ashes of the world with no one left to witness them. Both undead duel for the same reason, the shred of hope that maybe the survivor would be able to enable a way out of the dying world.

Dark Souls 2's soundtrack mostly isn't on the same level as bloodborne and DS3, but there are a few tracks that basically gave birth to the beloved orchestral themes souls games have become known for. You should totally give the Sir Alonne and Burnt Ivory King theme a try. They're the big debutes of the composer of BB and DS3 and worth a listen. Maybe the Majula and main menu theme too as they are very nostalgic and peaceful to listen to 👍🏽

Bit of lightweight context for you. The setting of Dark Souls is that of a dying world clinging vainly to the dwindling light of a single, sputtering flame. It's the crumbling, decrepit shade of a once glorious and prosperous land. The whole soundtrack is tinted with melancholy for what once was, and now lays in ruins. The Abyss Watchers are the undying legion that guards the ruins of an extinct kingdom, now a stinking bog. With no-one left to fight, they slay each other again, and again, and again, for all time. The OST reflects this, the exhaustion and despair of countless millennia trapped in a small room, with nothing but the impulse to fight, fall, and rise.
@TeraCMusic2 күн бұрын
So your explanation of the Abyss Watchers totally reminds me of this viral video of a robot cleaning up its own oil called "Can't Help Myself"! This machine starts out having a small oil leak that it can manage just fine and even dances a bit after it's done cleaning, but over time the leak gets worse and worse and by the end, it spends the rest of its 'life' scooping the oil back until it no longer can function. Not a perfect parallel though because the robot has no choice but to try and contain the oil if it wants to survive. It sounds like the Abyss Watchers had actual enemies to face at one point, but now their objective has turned into uncontrollable and eternal aggression towards each other just for the sake of completing said objective. So so deep, I am blown away!
@joelbenitez1790Күн бұрын
@@TeraCMusic The Abyss Watchers do exactly that, they fought any threat that is Abyss related (it's like a corruption for living beings, including terrain), but the ironic part is that the Abyss Watchers lost and were consumed by the Abyss at the end, just like the warrior of legend they were inspired by, Sir Artorias the Abyss walker, and what you find is them murdering each other for etenirty, and you as the player see in first hand the tragedy that fell upon them and it's your duty to put an end to it.

There are so, so, so many good tracks in the Dark Souls 3 soundtrack. I think I could reasonably give 19 tracks that I think are all incredible. The lead composer for 99% of the OST of FromSoftware games (Bloodborne, Dark Souls, Sekiro, etc) was Yuka Kitamura, a legendary composer. She took a more secondary role in Elden Ring, and after that she left the company. Now Shoi Miyazawa seems to be taking that place, he is also a genius.

also it's very cool, that you liked ds3 ost (because elden ring ost is basically dark souls 4 ost in some way). Just wanna say - if you have time please watch abyss watchers actual bossfight, it's incredible with this such goated music and then in game there is goated fight with goated cutscene. Would be nice to actually see the fight itself with music, but problem is the gameplay videos comes with in-game sounds and also music in bossfights doesn't have ending like in tracks on their own (if player beating boss till the end of the music it just repeats from begging). Yea, quite Heads and Tails game

Bloodeborne music, in my opinion, has a 'OH SHIT, WHAT IS THAT?! IT'S AFTER ME' style. Dark Souls 3 seems more somber, and I believe it's because the world is tired and all these bosses are people fighting over the last bits of the world. I think the music reflects that a bit. Deacons of the Deep is an interesting choice for the first video but it’s fun. DS3s soundtrack is nothing but phenomenal. I highly recommend the Twin Princes OST (It’s basically a requiem. A funeral for the dying world the game takes place in while fighting the one responsible for exactly that.) but in the end 95% of the entire OST is stunning. 7:52: Every FromSoft game has a different overall vibe with Bloodborne being horror, Elden Ring being triumphant and Dark Souls being tragic. Of course there are exceptions but about 80% of each soundtracks generally fit the vibe of the corresponding game. You can look at them like the Zelda series: same fundation but vastly different identities.

Also, you are correct in understanding that all of the DS games are more depressing and you were correct about 'reaching for one last time hoping anyone is there to hear you.' Spoilers, obviously, for those trying to avoid them. Bloodborne was more uncovering a mystery and having realizations that lead to understanding dirty secrets and harsh truths about your circumstances and human nature. It's the "OH SNAP is THAT what's going on?!" Bloodborne is increasing anger and comprehension. In bloodborne you're picking up the pieces after the fact and making a decisive decision/change of some kind. You sssorta get to right some wrongs in BB. DS series is about futility and realizing what you hoped for is pointless and a growing realization you've been used. That the world isn't what you thought it was. Moreso than other Fromsoft games in my opinion, you're the worst thing that happened to the other characters (though I haven't played Sekkiro yet). All is already lost, yet you're still dragging your body through hell because you need to see it through. If not you, then some other pawn will do it. Everyone is doing the same thing. DS is hugely impactful as a game... but BOY is it bleak.

It's a prototype of one of the most beautiful boss themes in the game and it was used only for a trailer and ended up not being in the game and rather being available for a limited ps4 theme. Interestingly the Abyss Watchers have a similar purpose in DS3 to what Gascoigne has. They are a gate to the rest of the game which you must overcome and are a representation of a dark fate which could befall the player. There's a lot of depth to the Abyss Watchers because they bridge lore from Dark Souls 1 which was five years prior. Short version: Artorias was one of four great knights who's quest was to hold back a sort of dark and formless eldritch horror known as the abyss. According to his legend he defeated the source of the abyss, but in truth he was consumed by it and killed by the player in DS1, the player in DS1 is the actual person who defeats the abyss. The Abyss Watchers come eons later as the abyss begins to rise again, taking up the mantle of their namesake Artorias The Abyss Watcher, and by the time the player in DS3 encounters them they too have been consumed by the abyss and are locked in endless combat with eachother, killing and being killed as every one of them sees the others (correctly) as corrupted undead husks. The boss fight is worth checking out for all the not too subtle storytelling in the mechanics.

Dark Souls 3 was the first Dark Souls after Bloodborne and so much of the game was inspired by changes made for Bloodborne, not the least of which can be heard in the score. They focused more on the bosses this time and the music was made to be moody and epic to follow suit. The issue for many players of the game is that the bosses are often so difficult that we rarely hear the full score. XD For myself it was only the intro and Abyss walkers soundtracks that I could remember well. Regardless, great finds at the end of all of them and I'm glad that you could appreciate the music in ways most gamers miss. =)

Ah, Dark Souls III... Still my favorite game and soundtrack. It came to take over Shadow of the Colossus, which was my favorite game for the 10 years prior, and soon it will complete another 10 years being my favorite game in its place. Apart from the Main theme, which is hard to not find it the best piece in the OST, my favorite song (and boss) here is the Dancer of the Boreal Valley. Maybe it's too slow of a song to be appreciated on its own, but it fits perfectly the atmosphere of the fight, with the strange way the boss moves and steps around, like it's walking in low gravity or underwater. Her delayed steps echoes through the room, but unfortunately they won't be heard in the song. Regardless, I'd love to see your opinion on the piece. And, if I may suggest, Shadow of the Colossus is another game with a banger orchestrated OST. There's a lot of heavy-action songs, but my favorites are the chill, beautiful aquarela-like The Sunlit Earth, which closes the game perfectly, and Epilogue (Those Who Remain), which the composer regarded as his magnum opus.

Farron's undead legion, the Abyss Watchers were a group of undead who following in the steps of Artorias, the Abyss Walker, swore to keep its resurgence at bay. It is said they'd destroy entire kingdoms at the first sign of exposure, but when the fire of the first flame waned, these dutiful undead offered themselves up as kindling to relight it; thus abandoning their oath so that the world might be saved... only, their sacrifice would merely delay the inevitable. The flame would weaken once more, and with the world on the verge of collapse, the old lords of cinder would be roused from the sleep of death to realize with terror that their selfless acts did little but extend its rapidly diminishing lifespan. And so the Watchers flee to their base, only to find that the abyss had begun festering at their very doorstep in their absence. They desperately try to fight it, but much like their predecessor Artorias, they are ultimately infected by the abyss and become locked in an endless struggle against one another to keep it from expanding further. That's when you, the player come in. As you enter the arena, one of the last three surviving Watchers-acknowledging why you came-points their sword at you and begins the fight. The first phase has a chorus of voices because you are fighting multiple of them, but by phase two their energy coalesces into one last member; one lone Abyss Watchers set on preventing you from taking their ashes and making the same mistake they did.

At some point I’d love to watch a video on your thoughts on Bear McCreary’s God of War and GoW: Ragnarok OSTs. That guy is seemingly always working, and GoW is I think some of his best work.

Yet another one falls into the Dark Souls III OST rabbit hole, two suggestions from me would be Slave Knight Gael and Soul of Cinder, but honestly if could do all of the songs that would be best!
@DoomSnekКүн бұрын
if I can make suggestions, I will suggest "the twin princes", "Aldrich, devourer of the gods", "Slave knight Gael" and "Lord of Cinders" (but for the last one, it is better to have listened to dark souls 1 final boss theme before)

kzbin.info/www/bejne/roWwn2yCmL-Za80si=IAuLnrVUtBxbAkOp I think this videos really good if you wanna understand what Dark Souls 3 and by extension the whole series is about. It doesnt get lost in the details of the lore and just covers the wider themes and intentions by the writers. Would highly recommend giving it a watch till the end because the ending always hits me in the feels a bit.

This is probably the 1000th time you read this but yes, a reaction to Elden Ring would be great. I'd specifically recommend: - Leyndell, Royal Capital - The Final Battle - Malenia , Blade of Miquella - Beast Clergyman - Regal Ancestor Spirit And, separately, the DLC soundtrack: - The Promised Consort - Divine Beast Dancing Lion - The Lord of Frenzied Flame - Belurat, Tower Setlement - Shadow Keep

Added most of these! I think I'm having trouble finding the official version of The Final Battle though, is it under a different name maybe?

@@TeraCMusic I don't know why my comment was eliminated. The KZbin algorithm is ravenous. Anyway, search for Elden Ring full official soundtrack. There's a play list with 67 tracks and it's track number 66. The play list is on a channel called Adam Smith.

@@TeraCMusic The Final Battle can sometimes be found in two parts, with one of them being the Elden Beast theme, which is often recommended. The Final Battle, along Leyndell Royal Capital and The Promised Consort are the most important.

For storytelling purposes, I suggest doing Midir and Slave Knight Gael last. They are the last secret boss of the franchise and final ending boss of the series respectively, and incorporate the motifs and stories behind them.

My favourite one from ds3 is Champion's Gravetender ost. Unfortunetly the fight isnt memorable, and pretty quick, so people tend to not really pay attention to the theme, but honestly, it's one of the best one. Wish you'll consider it tbh

Gotta listen to sister friede. The solo female vocals in that one are ao good too.

Ds3 has amazing soundtrack, "sister friede", "twins princes"... Btw Another game to react could be red dead redemption 2, music like : "that's the way it is", "prison break theme", "see the fire in your eyes", 10/10

I strongly recommend evaluating the soundtrack "Epilogue", but it is to the original game, not to the DLC. one of the most underrated compositions, nevertheless, is a true diamond in the game.
@jeremiel1818Күн бұрын
you can hear a lot of good things about tracks like "Soul of Cinder", "Twin Princes", "Slave-knight Gael"... but the whole essence of the game dark souls 3 is revealed in the "Epilogue"

You should definitely listen to more of the FromSoft ouvre! DS1 has some excellent tracks, and DS2 has a few outstanding pieces. Elden Ring's musical language is a lot more mainstream, but still excellent. And there's also Demon's Souls (the original, not the remake) where the soundtrack is a lot more barebones in terms of orchestration. It almost has a taste of the Baroque compared to their more recent games. All very interesting listens, each with their own similar but distinct voice.
