You all went CRAZY on the last episode, so here we are with FULL REACTIONS to "Laurence, the First Vicar" and "Living Failures"!

There will be a little break until Part 4 as I have some other videos already planned/uploaded for the month. Make sure to keep an eye out for my upcoming KZbin Anniversary video as I will be doing a giveaway to celebrate 15 years and 15k subs!

Happy November! Here we are for Part 3 with FULL REACTIONS! 🔥 After filming this vid, I went and watched Davi Vasc's reaction to Living Failures and I feel so stupid for not recognizing that string part as being the same as Gustav Holst's 'Mars' 😂(hence why I put it in the edit instead). I think I need to revisit a LOT of classical music now haha. Part 4 will have Lady Maria, Hail The Nightmare, and Orphan of Kos so stay tuned! 🎶

Unbelievable. I was about to recommend those 3 OSTs, especially since I think Hail The Nightmare and Orphan of Kos are very underrated. But you arleady planned those exact OSTs. Now I'm very excited. Bloodborne is an artistic masterpiece, and its music is as good as its lore is deep. Hail The Nightmare is very lyric focused, and I just highly appreciate its artistical place in the world and story of Bloodborne, especially when knowing the lyrics and its deeper symbolical meanings.

Laurence is the definition of "the road to hell is paved with good intentions," trying to heal people through the Healing Church, but ultimately starting the beast scourge in the whole of Yarhnam, gets killed and trapped in the hunter's nightmare to have his body eternally burning. In an essence, there is no Bloodborne without Laurence; First phase he's a flaming cleric beast, in the second phase when the solemn cello kick in, his legs explode and he's crawling on the ground, screaming in pain trying to kill you fighting for his life. He's one of the most tragic bosses besides Gerhman

Laurence is more tragic, he wanted to do something good but it went wrong, he tried to stop it but ended up turned into a monster and was beheaded and even if he had his missing skull he would have his memories back. In the nightmare he is doomed to suffer until we came in to stop his torment.

It goes deeper than that. Laurence was with Byrgenwerth, who plumbed the old labyrinth underneath Yharnam first. Which means that before the Healing Church even began, the college knew about "ailing" Loran, an ancient land swallowed by their own version of the Beast Plague. Which means that, despite knowing what happened to Loran, Laurence, in his hubris, believed he could do it better. There's also a dubiously canon moment in the comics that imply that Laurence and his church members poisoned the water supply in Old Yharnam with the "ashen blood" illness so that they could turn around and cure it. Old Yharnam, which was later torched nearly to the ground to keep the Plague at bay. That is why he sits in the purgatorial Hunter's Nightmare, eternally burning for his sins as he screams for forgiveness, and crawls desperately on the floor, dragging his flaming entrails behind him. Hell, when you get to him, he's in a pose in mock of the _Pieta_ statue. Except for Laurence, there is no one there to comfort him, and the very gods that Laurence idolized haven't been listening for a long, long time.

The living failures is one of my fav osts of all time in context. These grotesque, almost pushovers of a boss that has been tossed aside spend all their power to straight up open a rift into the deep unknown of space raining down meteorites on you. The reason why they're called Living Failures is because they were experimented on and designed to contact The Great Ones, eldritch beings beyond our comprehension. However, when they contacted them, those very beings simply responded by pelting us with asteroids. And so in their phase change they essentially used the reasons for their failure as an attack lol.
@TheDoomsock
@TheDoomsock Ай бұрын
I would also like to add during this entire fight, you are always under attack by at least two to three failures at once while another always hangs back, raising its arms to the sky to perform this magic ritual to no avail. One always tries while the rest are too busy trying to kill the player. But when they all in unison raise their arms finally, the ritual magics come fruition as the very sky warps into a sea of stars, they finally achieved what they were made for. That's when the music should turn into this triumphant crescendo near the end of it. It's incredible.

Lore dump incoming: Lawrance was the head of the Healing Church and pioneered the use of eldritch blood transfusions as a miracle cure. It healed injuries, cured diseases, and was canonically more intoxicating than alcohol. Unfortunately, anyone who'd taken the blood eventually turned into beasts (werewolfs), and Lawrence had Old Yarnham purged. Eventually, Lawrence and the older members of the church also succumbed to the blood and turned into even more monstrous beasts than the townspeople. Eventually, he was killed, and his soul went to a nightmare realm where you put him down for good.

«Oh, Laurence... What's taking you so long..., I've grown too old for this, of little use now, I'm afraid» - Gehrman, sleeptalking. Having been trapped in the Hunter’s dream for so long, Gehrman has no idea what befell the church, the hunters or Laurence. All he knows is the beasts roam the city and the Moon Presence calls upon hunters to cleanse these foul streets. This also tells us they were at some point colleagues or even friends. As for you getting cultush vibes, yes. The healing church sprouted from the ambitions of extremist scholars of Byrgenwyrth college. They took the holy blood and did with it as they pleased, despite the warnings of old master Willem. As the consequences of their actions dawned on the upper echelons of the Healing Church including Laurence himself, the question as writ in the lyrics of his theme arose: Expectare, iste blasphemia? Loosely translated, «wait, could this be blasphemy?». The lyrics speak of the beginning of the feast, the sanctity of the blood (sanguine sanctum) and the realization that there is more than mere healing powers in this old holy blood. It speaks of the emergeance of beasts. It’s a lament of pride, realization and regret.

So about the Living Failures, the OST is taken inspiration from the Song Mars by Gustav Holst wich is about God of War Aries/Mars. This composition inspired John Willians to create Star Wars themes. That's why it seems so familiar to Star Wars because both drink from same fountain. In Elden Ring there's another Boss Theme called Astel Naturalborn Of The Void wich also inspiration from Mars by Gustav Holst.

Quick note 12:12 you mentioned something about basically sending 2 different signals using the chords to portray back and forth. The living failures are failed expirements hence the name. However they were able to do what no other being was capable in the game. They managed to commune with the cosmos and reign down meteors on you, something no church expirement is capable of. Its a marvel of their power and truly incredible but no one expected that from them. Not their creators and certainly not the player

@@TeraCMusic Awesome! I'm very excited to hear that! Alright so. The first series that comes to mind is Legend of Zelda for their history of phenomenal orchestral sounds. But if I remember correctly you know quite a few of them already so let's skip that. Same thing with some of the other big names. Pokemon, (some of the older themes are beautiful, but black and white is a sleeper pick too), fire Emblem (again lovely main theme, Awakening, Fates & 3 Houses are my favourites in recent memory.), Elder Scrolls (but I think I saw you perform some of those) and so on and so forth. I'd like to give you a few you may be haven't dipped your toes into. Number one is hollow Knight. Great platformer metroidvania- Souls-like game. The entire ost is an absolute masterpiece of emotionally driven storytelling and world building. (Christopher larkins clever use of Leitmotifs is a treat!). Next is The Witcher 3 which features a whole range of very percussion intensive sounds. Not quite as many strings in this one but it's a very unique and memorable atmosphere. In recent months one of the best Soundtracks I've had the honor of attending life performances of was Yu Chen Pengs work on genshin impact. That is a rabbit hole on its own, let me tell you. With multiple hundreds of well-crafted orchestral pieces there is a seemingly never-ending amount of beautiful things to listen to and to put into playlists. (Of special note here are the Boss themes which feature multiple layers of complex storytelling the likes of which have only ever seen in really well written operas) And lastly for a very unique and fun experience I can recommend listening to some of League of Legends' character themes. There are many interesting ones and it's great fun to listen to and speculate about what a character and their motifs could look like!

Ill try give a brief synapses of the backstories for these. A group of scholars found ancient blood in tombs below the city of Yarnham. They also found evidence of great beings that had ascended to a higher plane of existence. Great Ones is the name the game uses. Very mysterious Lovecraftian style beings with unknowable goals and motivations. A few characters wanted humanity to also ascend to that next stage. Laurence thought they could use this holy blood to do it. So he split off from the rest of the school and founded the Healing church. They had discovered the blood could cure any illness and had a sort of intoxicating, addicting quality to it. The church grew in power rapidly with many people in Yarnham partaking in the blood. Eventually everyone started turning in to vicious beasts. The holy blood was actually a curse. We find Laurence trapped in a nightmare as a massive burning beast. The lyrics as someone else posted sort of tell his story with the blood. Laurence is a very tragic character because he wanted the best for humanity and thought the blood was the answer. But because of his own arrogance he ended up dooming everyone. Theres a sort of irony in his OST. While the epic heroic segment is playing Laurence is crawling around on the floor screaming in an almost pathetic way. (Still very dangerous gameplay wise but not storywise.) Other characters believed they could ascend humanity through physical experimentation. Turning themselves in to great ones literally. Or at least creating beings that could communicate with the great ones directly. Its kinda ambiguous afaik. Maybe a bit of both. The Living Failures are people who were transformed into these alien looking blue things. They are considered failures because they did not properly ascend. It seems they did gain some sort of power as they summon a meteor shower during the bossfight but they definitely didnt turn out as intended. We find them at the end of a research hall filled with other failed experiments. People with big bulbous fleshy heads that have gone insane. Hopefully that gives some sort of explanation. Bloodbornes story is very vague and confusing in general with lots of gaps. Cheers for the video though was a fun watch.

If I m not wrong, Living Failures are failed experiment in trying to create celestial emisseraries. During the fight when the last part of the song come it as likely they finally succeed as they raise their hand in a pray and the sky replies to their pleading ny showering you with a meteor rain.

Laurence, The First Vicar has full Latin lyrics that can be translated to english, the translation reads So you imposed the sacrament upon the children There will be a reward from the Holy Blood There will be a reward the Holy Blood keeps secret I try to repay humanity with Holy Blood! With an honest net, Blood... Wait, is this blasphemy? Is it dissimilar from life in this way? The beast overcame wild lands beyond. With an honest net, Blood... Wait, is this blasphemy? This mystery is beset by maintaining life was not absolved Spread the word... Be afraid... Spread the word... Of the Blood Fear the poison The feast is guaranteed By the Holy Blood So let this languish wine (be) O, poisonous drink When Laurence turned into the first Cleric Beast, members of the church ran to the streets chanting "Spread the word, fear the poison," a twist of Laurence's master's warning to fear the Old Blood, as there would be consequences for using it and relying on it so heavily.

Laurence being a cleric beast makes sense, but there's still a part of me that wishes he had a unique model like Ludwig, but his ost is still my favorite in all of fromsoft, perfectly tells his story with emotion, tragic, but also for the villain of the game it's fitting (yes ik moon presence is the villain but we don't know why it did what it did, Laurence knew what he was doing, plus he was part of the people that went to pthumeru and dug up/ made contact with the old ones anyways, he started everything, villain in my book)

Living Failures is the name of a Boss consisting of rejected creations that by themselves are useless to their creators, acting as just a guard for a door. But when they work together, they rip the very fabric of reality apart, you see the cosmos, and then they fire Meteors at you.

Hi! Bloodborne veteran and pianist here. I’ve made it my mission to watch and comment on each of these videos. Laurence is an interesting character. As someone else mentioned, he is responsible for quite a few of the events in the story, and as his title and heavily liturgical instrumentation and lyricism would suggest, he is a similar kind of creature as the Cleric Beast. There is a key difference between these two characters. Whereas Cleric Beast wanders the real ingame city of Yharnam, Laurence is in a dream place dedicated to torturing the people responsible for actions against the gods and cruelty against nature, forever, for eternity. In this place, you fight him in a corrupted version of his own church. Symbolically, Laurence has become a beast and is burning eternally in this hell. There’s a dichotomy, between this screeching flaming werewolf and his very grandiose and, well, coherent theme. This theme, like many others, has lyrics spoken in Latin. The words detail the story from his perspective, as he makes these famous mistakes, and justifies him in a certain sense. In this way, I submit that your character is freeing Laurence’s soul from the nightmare by killing him, finally giving him peace. The Living Failures have a lot of implications for the church, so I’ll give you a cliff notes version. When the church began, it was lead by a man named Willem, and his partner, Laurence. They both wanted to find a way to become something more than men, to be on the same level as the gods, to be able to sit among them. They founded the church as a sort of front for a research project, where they would kidnap people and perform research on them, by injecting them with different magical fluids and magic stuff. The Living Failures are just that, the most successful but not completely experiments, however, they are among the only ones to survive. They are horrifying to look at, and just like their cosmic, space odyssey type theme, they are reminiscent of creatures from a movie about aliens. However, what’s interesting is that bridge, that choir between the first and second phase. Like Laurence’s theme, this is sung in Latin. The choir, representing the failures themselves, are *praising* something. Not the gods, but the boss right after them. Amazing reaction, as always.

I hate to be that guy but its stated that the healing church was established after laurence left byrgenworth and willam along with many other scholars due to the disagreement between insight or blood to reach great one status. The location and look of the living failures suggest they were churchs/choir attempt to create a celestial emissary with the knowledge they had gotten when they were students at byrgenworth during the fishing hamlet incident

But of lightweight context for you: Laurence was a founding member of a religious order that uses cursed blood transfusions to heal the sick, against the sage advice of his academic mentors. In a lot of ways the story of Bloodborne is the story of Laurence. As you already learned with Gascoigne, the curse turns people into beasts; well, the clerics of this church, due to their exposure to the cursed blood, became even bigger, gnarlier beasts. Cleric beasts. It isn't an accident his theme has a callback to the cleric beast theme because Laurence was the first. Unlike Ludwig who gets a moment of lucidity before you end his suffering forever, Laurence never does. All that's left of him is burning, feral rage and even after you cut off his legs he drags himself after you until you put him down for good. As for the Living Failures, well, you can imagine that a fair amount of trial and error was required to work out how much blood to administer to heal the sick...

@@TeraCMusic I´ll leave you a list that you can come back and refer to if you wish, Dark Souls III is really an achievement in soundtrack design. - Dark Souls III Main Theme (Absolute must) - Firelink Shrine - Iudex Gundyr - Vordt Of The Boreal Valley - Pontiff Sulyvahn - Abyss Watchers - Twin Princes - Soul of Cinder (final boss of the game, with callbacks to Dark Souls 1 ost, magic stuff, the end of the age of fire) - Sister Friede - Darkeater Midir - Slave Knight Gael and For The Dark Soul (these two play consecutively in-game, so they are two parts of a bigger piece, so to speak) These stand out to me out of the OST, and there is a common thread that binds maybe 90% of them, and some of the bloodborne themes that also stand out. And that would be Yuka Kitamura, a japanese composer that has worked with FromSoft for years. She is the pinnacle of their team, and very much to "blame" for their signature sound. Besides composing many themes, you can also actually hear her voice on many of them, as she is the soprano voice heard in a lot of choir based themes. Just a tour de force, that woman. Enjoy!

Laurence is... a bit of an annoyance for most fans. Not only is he literally a Cleric Beast model except on fire this time (yadda yadda penny for every time, yadda yadda two pennies, weird it happened twice etc etc), the OST is literally also just a slightly different version of the Cleric Beast / Vicar Amelia OST. To add insult to injury, while not technically correct, Laurence is widely considered to be the final boss of the DLC in the sense that most people fight him last, and it's a real punch to the face to just get... Fire Cleric Beast: Lava Shitting edition. He does that btw. Second phase he loses he legs and shits and barfs lava over the whole arena, in a game where the combat revolves around maneuvreing it turns the fight into a glorified area denial hero shooter bc most of the time you can barely approach the bastard. Most people believe his fight was largely unfinished for all these reasons.
