The Ludwig boss, like many bosses in the game has two fights and hopefully explains the large transition in musical motifs. The story, is of a swordsman who lost his mind to beasthood, regaining his mind for just long enough to fight you in an utterly epic duel.

Bit of lightweight context for you. When you first encounter Ludwig he's barely human, a twisted monstrosity still adorned with the shredded rags that were once his holy vestments, and a sword strapped to his back that he doesn't even remember is there. The music in the first phase is, therefore, chaotic and dissonant, while this huge, mangled creature howls and claws unrelentingly at you. Midway through the fight you knock the sword loose. In this moment, Ludwig remembers that he was once a man; he picks up the sword and stands on two legs to square off with you. It's at this exact moment the OST switches to a stirring, triumphal waltz, and the player has to effectively dance with him to close out the fight and free him from his misery. It's a remarkable piece of music.

@@TeraCMusic good call! In a lot of ways, Gascoigne is the opposite of Ludwig; like you he's a hunter of beasts, only he's slowly losing his mind to a curse. When you find him he has already killed his own wife, mistaking her for a beast. Gascoigne is armed with the same weapons and equipment you are, and he uses the terrain in the dense graveyard you find him in to flank you. Late in the fight he succumbs to the curse; he tosses his weapons aside and becomes a werewolf. At this point the clever hunter tactics are abandoned and the 3rd phase of the fight is white-knuckle, relentless attacks. You can hear the context change in the music. It's worth noting that Gascoigne is the first boss of the main game and Ludwig is the first boss of the DLC. So when Ludwig has his midway switch, you might not even realise that you've already seen it but in reverse.

One of my favorite things about this track is how it includes Ludwig's story so well. Ludwig was a very accomplished and looked up to member of the Church Hunters, and in the climax of his second phase, you can hear the strings almost spiral, representing his descent into madness and the beasthood that followed.

9:08 Unironically I actually do listen to this music every night, to you its scary, to me its peak emotion, tragedy, fear and despair, when they were composing these tracks the composers had one phrase in mind and it was "Mortal Struggle" and by god did they nail it so hard. I find comfort in many dark and grueling stories where you have the choice to either succumb to it or become the tiny flicker of light that still holds on to hope despite how truly hopeless.

@@TeraCMusic The main plot point in the game is the use of something called the "healing blood." Blood that is taken from ambiguous sources that acts as the game's main healing item. It is described as more addictive than alcohol and themes of drug use and loss of self are constantly expressed by the games various cut scenes and npc dialogs. Think Dr. Jeckly and Mr. Hyde. In fact the KZbinr Charred Thermos has an extensive collection of video game essays about how Bloodborne is inspired by the poetry of William Ernest Henley and novels of his close friend Robert Louis Stevenson. Henley had to have his leg amputated and in an effort to save his second leg had a surgery done with a novel technique known as, sanitation. He also had first hand experience with some of the early sedatives and anesthetics of the day, namely ether. Long story short, Miyazaki digs deep when he makes a game and it's far easier to simply call his work, art. =)

Insane fact about Ludwig’s song: it is not just a choir imitating some abstract words. It is an actual text in latin language. Knowing you aren't playing the game, let me add some context to one of the pieces: Gascoigne is a very sad story. The player is a hunter, but a very new hunter. Gascoigne is a hunter who has been hunting beasts much longer, and who's constant exposure to the blood of the beasts and the violence of the hunt has driven him slowly mad. He has a daughter and a wife, and his wife keeps a music box close at hand to play their favorite song to call him back to his humanity. By the time the player encounters him he is teetering on the edge of beasthood and madness. On this particular night of the hunt his wife had forgotten the music box. The player can find her corpse in the boss arena, and the player can also find his daughter and get the music box from her if they can find her house before encountering Gascoigne. Sadly Gascoigne is now too far gone to respond to the song and return to himself and it only serves to cause him to stagger in mental anguish. If you play the music to him too many times he will go into a frenzy. It's an amazing piece of mechanical storytelling. The "Father" in Father Gascoigne might be mistaken for a rank in the healing church which he works for but the game makes it explicit that no such rank exists and one can infer the game refers to him as Father Gascoigne because he is a literal father.

I’d also like to add another fact about gascoigne. He is not a native yharnamite. He came to yharnam seeking the healing blood, and became a hunter in return for treatment. While father most likely refers to him being a literal father, it’s also possible that he was a holy man in his homeland. He could be keeping the title as a way to keep a part of the home he left behind.

Hi! Bloodborne Veteran and pianist back for another breakdown. Cleric Beast has some very interesting implications from a music and lore perspective. You're absolutely correct in that this track is incredibly chaotic, and as suggested by the name of the track this is on purpose. As you may have figured out, Bloodborne is a game where the main story revolves around a plague that turns people into beasts. This plague was caused by a holy blood that was used as medicine, synthesized from an Eldritch god that the church found underground. The Cleric Beast is presumably one of these members of the church, who succumbed to the plague and fully transformed into a giant, hungering and feral beast. Much of this games music follows the mentality of the character or story it's telling. In this way, Cleric Beasts theme, therefore, is a heavily transformed Requiem, not only showing the monster that this particular Cleric has become in the heavy and frantic strings and brass, but also, the Mozart-esque liturgical choir, almost desperately calling out and screaming for someone to save them. The Hunter, or Father Gascoigne, follows this motif perfectly, as in his fight, we don't just see the beast he becomes, we have the privilege of seeing him transform into a beast, as the disease drives him completely insane. What's ironic about the Hunters, is that the very same blood that caused this plague, is the primary healing item for all hunters. This causes a cycle, where hunters are hired to kill beasts, and become beasts in the process due to their imbibing of the blood, and new hunters are formed to hunt those ones. By the time we find him in-game, he is so crazed by bloodlust and plague that he believes he is the hunter, and we the beast. So, you have this Jaws-inspired motif, a relentless pursuit that leads to madness, as in his fight, he literally turns into a sort of werewolf in front of your eyes. Ah, Bloodborne. The main theme of this game is incredible, it showcases the nature of the game so well. Not much to say about it, it's just a banger. And then, we get to the most acclaimed and praised theme in the entire OST. Ludwig, the Accursed and Holy Blade. This song is, without a doubt, an absolute monster of a theme. Tritones, tension tension tension, tritones tritones. You walk into his arena, and he is the most grotesque and disgusting creature you faced. His first phase is fast-paced and terrifying, as he charges and flails at you with reckless abandon. And then, you get him to half health. The entire game chances. The creature falls, and the artifact on its back begins to glow a brilliant blue, like moonlight on the water. His loyal magic blade, in an attempt to give Ludwig an honorable and human death, gave him a portion of his mind and sanity back. The music becomes triumphant, and human, it gains a melody, it truly becomes human. What makes this song great is that the first phase is horrible. Pretty hard boss, too. Amazing reaction.

Father Gascoigne truly a tragedy of a man if you want to know his story well i will tell it. He was once a Hunter of The Healing Church and often on his hunts he would become blood drunk and nearly consumed by madness thankfully his wife and daughter would play a music box that had his favorite song to bring him back to his senses so he would come home. Sadly on the night when the player hunter arrives Father Gascoigne is also out hunting you find his home and are able to speak with his young daughter and she requests that you find her parents. She mentions that her mom forgot to take the music box with her and when his wife found him he was already consumed by madness in a blood drunken state and without the music box she couldn't bring him back to his senses and he ended up killing her. When you kill him his last words with his dying breath are "forgive me" be it either to his daughter or wife we don't know but in that final moment he finally saw the beast he had become and died with regret and guilt in his heart and you the player have to make a choice. You can either tell their daughter the truth or lie and if you lie she will have so much hope in her voice and declare that she loves you as much as her grandparents but trust me that girl does NOT have a happy ending it's truly a tragedy.

Some lore on the cleric beast and by extension, many other beasts of Bloodborne’s world: While we (kinda) encounter it as a single boss enemy in the game, it is not one of a kind. The «cleric» part comes from the fact all clerics eventually fall to beasthood and transform into something akin to it. Another boss in the game, Vicar Amelia, uses the same boss theme and while her form differs somewhat, she is still a cleric beast. I see in other replies you’ve promised to listen to Laurence the First Vicar next time. He is the first cleric beast of this era. Commoners generally only become lesser beasts, more akin to toothy dogmen, ogre-like giants or full on lycantrhopes for those with more means. The church’s healing blood is an exquisitely addictive substance and practically the entire city is bloodaddled. Even the player character uses the blood for healing and to grow stronger. Yahrnam being a theocracy, the upper echelons of the church of course have access to more blood than the rest, and therefore they are the ones who become the fiercest of beasts

The transition in Ludwig's OST is very much a transition from a raving madman turned beast eldrich horror into a semi-sane/recovered sanity of said raving madman. Also note that the second half of Ludwig's OST is basically a waltz. Ludwig's theme is almost asking the hunter for once last dance, but instead of a dance to impress and to woo the other, it is a dance to the death. One last dance to end it all.

@TeraCMusic that's great! Also I know some people have been saying this already if possible make sure to listen to the full tracks. While most enemies in Bloodborne are beasts and men partially transformed into beasts, there are also other Hunters in the game which can serve as allies or enemies. One location pits you against many such Hunters as regular enemies, while Father Gascoigne, Ludwig the Accursed/Holy Blade, Gerhman, and Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower are all Hunters that serve as full on boss battles throughout the game and Old Hunters DLC.

The Cleric Beast theme feels like thesudden brush of a strong, bitterly-cold wind that opens up into a windstorm in fall. Fittingly, the creature itself is designed after a gargantuan Wendigo, a creature of endless hunger, endlessly trying to satiate a void that will never be full - kinda like our addiction to the game LOL.

This will include some story spoilers. Part of what makes the Ludwig fight so memorable and by extension Ludwig's theme is that a major part of the horror aspects of Bloodborne (at least to my opinion) is that the beasts you mindlessly slaughter are people, many of whom still possess awareness and resemblance to their original selves. The dialog during the Ludwig fight really drives home the point that even beasts who underwent a complete metamorphosis can still hold onto much of their humanity.

Cleric Beast theme is the only one (if I'm not mistaken) from the whole OST that has an alpha version which unfortunately did not make it into the game. It's way scarier than the final version, with creepy choirs and whispers in the background. And since the theme is reused for another boss, it's a real shame that FromSoft did not make use of both versions :( It is available on youtube. Yeah, each boss theme has two parts which change when the boss reaches second phase. And RIP Ludwig lmao. It's often fan's favorite, not mine tho. Overall these themes are supposed to be creepy and scary. After all you fight beasts and aliens in a literal nightmare.

Funny you should mention that the Cleric Beast theme sounds like the choir is begging you to avert your eyes and run, for multiple reasons. Firstly because Bloodborne actually has proper Latin lyrics to all of its themes, it's not just pretty-sounding gibberish like some games do. And the Cleric Beast theme literally begins with the phrase _"HORROR FINI"--_ which translates as "the horror of the end." Secondly, in Bloodborne's pasts, the Church very much trying to keep Cleric Beasts a secret. Clerics always turned into the most horrific beasts, and they conspicuously walked around with weapons far larger than would be needed to deal with the average werewolf. Finally, there's already a whole theme in the game about sight, and the lack thereof, with blindness often associated with beasthood. To the point where almost all beasts in-game are either blind, have some sort of covering over their eyes, or completely lack eyes altogether. There's also the general idea of averting your gaze from the horrors to avoid going mad, to the point where the more horrible creatures you see, the more susceptible you are to the Madness status effect. So the choir isn't _just_ representative of the Church begging you to avert your eyes from the horror. It's also the Cleric Beast/s themselves begging you to not look at their hideous visage.

If you ever check out the Dark Souls and Elden Ring music you may notice that there are some very unusual themes for video games and ultimately the games are almost certainly directly inspired by Wagner's Ring Cycle, especially Elden Ring and the 1st Dark Souls.
