The instrument is the Kobyz. It's a 2 stringed instrument, with one string made up of 75 horse hairs, and the other string made from 60 horsehairs (and the curved bow which is made with 40 horse hairs). The strings aren't pushed down to a fret, but rather are played with pressure by either the fingernail, or by a pad on the finger, as well as the tones varied by the pressure of the bow.

Dimash doesn't depend on his talent alone. Have you watched his interview on KZTV (about 40mins) you can get a lot of insights from that to understand why he's different from regular artists. He grew up in a traditional family home where his grandparents took care of him and his siblings while his parents worked. His grandma spoke of how he would often while practicing in his room late into the night sing so loudly she would have to remind him that they're trying to sleep. So no, he didn't always have the space but he made do with what he had. Luckily he had the love and understanding of family that many students miss out on as you noted. That love and support allowed him to hone his God-given talent with daily practice from a young age to now, it's why he's good at what he does. It was never just talent but sheer will and hard work. The uncorfontable feeling probably comes from the scale or key of Fa minor that to us sounds spooky, ancient or oriental.
