Hey, big time Dirty Loops fan here, and I had a blast listening to this crazy cover with you ☺️ You wondered about Cory Wong, and yeah, he is an amazing funk guitarist in his own right. Totally worth diving into his catalog. He plays with many great musicians, including Victor Wooten and also with the funk band Vulfpeck, amongst many others. The horns include members of the famous Hornheads who toured, recorded and performed with Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Prince and many other greats. During the COVID years Cory approached Dirty Loops and asked if they wanted to do some songs together. Why not, said Jonah. Turned out Cory had a whole album in mind. Their collaboration resulted in “Turbo”, an incredible collection of funky, more or less horn-heavy tracks, four of them with music videos. This being the COVID years and with travel restrictions in place, the two bands couldn’t meet, let alone rehearse together. So they did everything via Skype/FaceTime/etc. Even the video was filmed in two segments by both bands on two different continents. Both bands got identical props, carpets, lighting, agreed on the same camera and lighting angles, etc. Cory filmed in the US, the Loops in Sweden. Aron, their drummer, later edited all the footage together to make it look like both bands are playing on the same stage. They had not met each other in person at that stage. Even the three Loops did, due to COVID lockdowns at the time, most of their communicating (sending of music files, discussion of arrangements etc.) via phone/Skype. There is an interesting podcast on Cory’s channel “Cory & The Wong Notes” where he talks to Henrik Linder about those times and the making of this album, and the challenges and fun they had with it. Taking a classic MJ hit like Thriller and swinging it in 12/8 is a heist in itself 😉 Glad you both liked it and duly had your minds blown 🤣 The horns and Cory are hanging back a bit in this one, but surely get to shine on some of the other tracks from this album. Check out “Follow the Light” and “Turbo”, the title track from the same album 🔥🔥 For some other Dirty Loops awesomeness, check out “Next To You”, and simply everything else they’ve ever done. Mad mad stuff, all of it. 🙏

Forgot to mention that I appreciate the way you both introduce this track by paying homage to some background information on the band. It’s respectful, in my view. And although I’m dying for you to get into the track, it puts the whole thing into some kind of perspective. After all, I’m after a reaction or analysis, not just listening to the music itself (which I have done plenty of times; out of the three-plus million views, about one million are from me 🤣) So thanks for that guys 🙏

Mike Nelson, the Hornheads' trombonist and arranger, is a GENIUS (in VERY capable company!) His work here on the double-bell euphonium deserves mention, as does Kenny Holman's sax/flute/clarinet triple threat! 🙏

Thanks for this reaction. I really love this way funkier version of Thriller, and that horn section is to die for. Love the way they switch up the sound in the interlude by changing instrumentation to the softer sounds of flugelhorns, flute, and clarinet. And the double-bell euphonium is just such a fun touch as well. One major reason for the difference in the bass line is the different time signature. The original is in 4/4, while this is in 12/8. Gotta love the way Dirty Loops do covers. 😁 If you want to see more of that horn section you could always check out some of the other songs from the collab album they did together. "Foilow the Light" has vocals and can also be found on Dirty Loop's channel, while "Turbo" and "Ring of Saturn" are instrumentals and can be found on Cory Wong's channel.

Wow, Lotta! That softer sound in that middle section, brought on by the change of instruments, -I never thought of that, and it’s so true. This whole section tho reminds me of a journey through music history, going from a late classical (Strauss/Wagner) kinda style to big band jazz and finally coming out the other end with that Stevie Wonder-era sound. Whatever the arranger had in mind, it’s brilliant with the way tension and release has been created here… ☺️

The prominence and originality of the 12/8 bass line suggests Henrik came up with the shift of time signature. But I guess it could just as well have been Jonah mucking about with a synth bass, like he did on his cover of Bad. Or Aron. Or funk meister Cory. But the point is, someone came up with that bass line and ran with it. The musical idea predates the abstract theoretical idea. Typically.
@lottawiklund8606

@@hackapump Yeah, who knows. It definitely is someone in Dirty Loops though, as they've said that they already had their contributions to the album (Follow the Light, Thriller, and Hästråtta) mostly done when Cory contacted them about the collab, and decided to use them for that. My guess would be on Aron, as they've also said that he's mostly the one to come up with rhythmic ideas, and also quite often is the one to write some of the bass lines (which is the explanation Henrik gives for some of them being quite unorthodox for bass). 😁

Life is a party (livet är en fest) - and Dirty Loops really makes it a party! ;-) Please keep your reactions to Dirty Loops coming. At your last reaction I said, I wouldn't recommend anything specific - but... A couple of my favorites: "Breakdown", "Rock you", "World on fire", "Wake me up" (another coversong) - or for something a bit different "Die for you"

Cory is very much a funk player, and in funk the guitar is typically as much a percussion instrument as it is a tonal instrument. Like in this song - he’s mostly just producing 16th notes, adding to the groove like a percussionist, and the actual notes are secondary. (That’s probably why you have a hard time hearing it, you’re listening for tonal content, but he is grooving). He has his own band, Cory & The Wong Notes, but he is probably best known as a member of funk band extraordinaire Vulfpeck. Both are highly recommended, but Vulfpeck is required listening, in my humble opinion. Incredible musicians, great music.

Great reaction! Next “Follow the light” seems obvious, then Next to you. I really like the short instrumental pieces Aron and Henrik did for fun in Songs for lovers, such as Pink power, Bitten by the kitten, and Old Armando had a farm, and Coffee break is over, where Jonah joins in on keyboard (wobbling on a drum). Their old covers are amazing in their own right, and their first hit, Hit me, is as well. Breakdown is a slow piece, World on fire and other showcase Henrik’s abilities in a lovely way. I don’t really know music, but I do sense that Dirty Loops are special, fantastic, and a lot of fun!

The funny thing about this video is that Dirty Loops, Cory, and the horns were all in different locations.
