What killed nu-metal? After Korn, Limp Bizkit and Slipknot put it on the map in the 90s, it peaked in 2001 or so before falling off in 2003. So what happened??
- Why Korn's debut album in 1994 changed EVERYTHING and became the template for nu-metal bands
- How the grunge bands like Nirvana and Alice in Chains, alternative metal bands like Rollins Band, Helmet, and Rage Against The Machine, and rappers like Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg laid the foundation for Korn to create nu metal
- Why snobs, critics and gatekeepers have always hated nu metal and looked down on the fans
- The various flavors of nu metal (eg rap metal, industrial nu metal) and bands like Dope, Coal Chamber, Hed Pe, Mushroomhead, Snot, POD, Flaw, Cold, and "nu-adjacent" bands like System Of A Down, Linkin Park, Incubus and Deftones
- What ultimately lead to the downfall of nu-metal, and why it was replaced by metalcore bands like Killswitch Engage, emo bands like The Used and hard rock bands like Five Finger Death Punch
- How nu-metal influenced the current generation of metalcore, deathcore and rock bands like Suicide Silence, Of Mice & Men, Emmure, King 810, and Sylar

@@tytomasoski238 Thanks off the suggestion, I'm watching it now. And this guy does not understand what selling-out means, at all. It's got nothing to do with how popular they become. So true. There is a time when, similar to TV shows, bands just jump the shark, and for some reason, for almost all relevant nu metal bands, that time was around 2003/04. Korn didn't make a really good album after Take A look in the Mirror, Slipknot became more mainstream with Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), and Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach and Linkin Park also adopted a more polished, mainstream sound. It was just the time when nu metal stopped feeling fresh and new and became mainstream.

Very intersting video. I'm from France, and I was 14 yeas old in 1996. We also had this Nu-Metal tsunami in Europe, and this was the best time of my life! Between 1996 & 2000 with bands like Korn, Coal Chamber, Deftones, SOAD, My Ruin, Kittie... we definitely had our own bands! No need to deal with the old metal bands of our older brothers and sisters. New sound, new clothes, that was GREAT and that was our generation!!! Plus also no internet like today at this time, no free downloads, no youtube! When we bought a tape or a cd, we absolutely had to love it, even if it was bad, hahaha! Today, as I'm writing this comment, I'm 40 years old, and I still listen to all these bands, I still wear Deftones shirt, and I still have a Coal Chamber bag. Thank you for this video.

Even though I'm in my 20s I still miss the 90s-00s music, basically most music sounded way better than today's trash it wasn't so commercialised made to sell rather than passion. When I was a tenn in late 00s-early 10s there was so many alternative people that didn't dress the same, nowadays everyone seems to look the same and almost act the same. I miss the times where people were angry and pissed off at the government's around the world. My favourite band will always be system of a down, I wish they could have worked out their beef with each other.

Same here.... actually, I was a hip hop kid. It was some friends I used to hang out with who got me into Metal in general because of bands like Korn, LB, ILL Niño, Deftones, and Soil. Then I found bands like Gojira, Dagoba, and Meshuggah. Seeing these bands live was the ultimate experience as well. They inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn. I'm thankful for my musical journey.

@@benclimo461 I think you're getting a distorted view through the eyes of nostalgia.... These bands were HEAVILY commercialized to sell. It was no different than the hair metal or post-grunge stuff, nor the boy bands, pop punk or emo acts or any other super popular trend. Claiming all the nu metal bands were solely about originality and genuine passion is a HUGE stretch to say the least. There were very few actually original acts. Most of them were just clones from one type of band or another, much like Finn showed in the video. Seriously, what makes Breaking Benjamin so unique compared to Three Days Grace, or POD to Saliva? The majority of those bands all played from the same formula one way or another. For every Korn, there were a few dozens Korn derivatives. They all copied the same style of music, same lyrics, same clothes/hair/makeup/costume, same stage antics, etc. I agree it's a lot better than the trash in heavy rotation nowadays, but don't pretend it wasn't all about the money and getting exposure back then just like it is now.

Chevelle just headlined Rockville, new album, and tour cycle, hed pe/ill nino wasn't bands I listened to so I don't keep track of them. Dope is still going strong, DevilDriver is still kicking ass and they do Coal Chamber songs, they've reunited as Coal Chamber a few times but that's band issues not the music. Prophets of Rage have replaced Rage Against The Machine, Linkin Park sadly hasn't been able to continue due to Chester's suicide. Staind is still doing shows, Aaron Lewis has gone mostly country though, Disturbed is touring, Static-X is touring, Mushroomhead has always been around putting out good stuff. Drowning Pool died with the original vocalist. Fear Factory, Machinehead, Otep are all still going strong. The genre was never about cranking out top 10 hits, that's like asking Punk to crank out top 10 hits, maybe when they're popular in the mainstream but they aren't mainstream. I'd like to say in the mainstream Perspective Nu Metal is dead but it isn't entirely, in every other aspect? Still alive and well.

Just saw Korn/Chevelle on April 1st. They all looked alive to me. The show was awesome and what's even cooler, my granddaughter is the one who suggested we go. She wanted tickets for her 19th birthday. I don't think she even had a clue how much I like Korn. Korn and Chevelle both sounded incredible. Now if I can just get my wife to go see Anthrax and Black Label Society in August here in Dallas, she has already baulked so it may take more persuasion.

I love korn. I grew up with them, they are still one of my favorite bands. But I gotta say there was another band that I really enjoyed that didn't get as much attention. Same man, nu metal was just another progression in the journey metal heads take. What made me drift away from nu metal was meeting a group of guys who took me to a Cannibal Corpse show. Seeing that sledgehammer rhythm and George’s fierce vocals with Webster’s wizardry on bass made me do a 180.

One factor that probably contributed to Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish album sales was that it had the Mission Impossible 2 song (Take a look around). That was a huge deal. Also, Linkin Park's first album (Hybrid Theory) was more or less a Nu Metal album. Their second one was a cross between Nu Metal, Hard Rock and other stuff.

I'm 50 and Nu-metal was something I was concerned with ... at first for about 5 minutes. I think it has more to do about *which* band and *which* songs. Korn was one of the first bands I remember who came on heavy and hard and sang about family dysfunction and isolation. Yes, Grunge did that (and so did some old school rock) but it was kind of like Grungelike lyrics but heavy. As for the music, it was simply different. But to say that they didn't have something meaningful to say - I think the gatekeepers had that wrong. These were angry kids. They *tried* the grunge approach and nobody listened. Conversely bands like LimpBizkit - if you took them at face value - were just fun (core-pop?)

Critics, will be critics, to the very end. They're relentless to see whatever, or whoever, they hate be nonexistent. Genres change, people change, over the years and it's what's trending at the time that's popular. That being said, it's up to the devoted fans like us to keep the music alive. Man, I love my Korn and been a fan since the early 90's, and will be a fan till I'm old and grey. I'm also a huge fan of Fugazi and a whole array of music. The unfortunate difference between love & hate is, people are particular of what they love and what they'll allow in their lives, where hate is like a floodgate given unconditionally, even if you asked for it, or not. Love your videos bro, I've subscribed to your IG account and keep rockin! 🤘
