My mother taught piano lessons for many years. In the U.S. we refer to a memory aid as a "pony". The ones she taught her students included the "whole" rest "looks like" a hole in the ground and the half rest "looks like" a hat. I don't know about other parts of the world but, here in the United States, one of the most common "mistakes" in music is for people to not give the "rests" their proper value. Thus, if the last measure of a musical phrase in 4/4 time includes a dotted half note and a quarter rest, some people will play (or sing) the three-beat note and then give the quarter rest half of its allotted value - so the measure gets only 3-1/2 beats before they begin to play (or sing) the first note of the next phrase. I sometimes wonder aloud how such people can manage to walk. Would they trip themselves if they tried to walk the way they "count" the beats in a song?
@MusicMattersGB Жыл бұрын
I agree about rests. It’s a common issue
@rogermetzger7335 Жыл бұрын
@@MusicMattersGB It has occured to me that some people might be under the impression that being the first person to sing (or play) the first note of a musical phrase constitutes "leading the music". Just a theory. No basis in evidence.

Hahahaha, I just realized how straightforward our names are in French. The notes are called, in order you presented them: une ronde (a round), une blanche (a white), une noire (a black), une croche (a crooked, or maybe it’s from un crochet which is a hook) and une double (a double). I think it’s quite funny.

the way I have always remembered which is the semibreve rest and which is the minim is to imagine the stave as a water line and to think that the 'heavier' 4 beat brick would be below the water line, and the 'lighter' 2 beat brick would float on the surface of the water. got to remember that they are on different staves still, though :)

Maybe it would be easier with an actual human speaking to me, but my attempts at trying music theory with ABRSM and RCM have so far been unsuccessful. This however, lays it out in such an approachable manner that some of what I've learned is finally clicking! Do you have any exercise books for sale?
@MusicMattersGB Жыл бұрын
You’re right. It’s so much easier with a human being explaining it to you, where you can also see it written down and hear it played. That’s exactly what our online theory courses do at www.mmcourses.co.uk You would soon learn your theory there.

Hi sir, are there subtitles in your courses? My son is not good English, so he needs them to understand your lessons. Thank you!

Apologies that we can’t provide subtitles for our courses. You have lifetime access so you can pause and repeat as often as you need to.

Is it true that you can only have one whole note per bar to be able to subdivide it into half notes, 1/4 notes, 1/8th notes etc? Or is it ever possible to have a multitude of whole notes in a single bar? Just curious as I've started to learn drums.
@MusicMattersGB2 жыл бұрын
Technically you could have more than one whole note per bar but in reality it’s very rare. You’re more likely to have faster moving rhythms.

This begs the question what is a whole breve and why name the basic unit as a half? I like whole, half, quarter,eighth and sixteenth much better then the dot adds half that value without worrying about quavers and minims much less breves and half breves.
@MusicMattersGB2 жыл бұрын
A whole breve looks like a semibreve and has two vertical lines to the left and to the right. A Breve is 8 beats - hence Semibreve 4 beats
