I had thought short scores were adopted simply to cram more hymns into the hymnals. ;-) As a singer, I much prefer reading open scores. When hymns have lots of lyrics, my eyes are jumping all over the place, trying to follow both the lyrics and the musical line. And you're right -- the tenor's treble clef in the open score does seem like madness.

In my not very extensive compositional experience, writing in short score has a limiting effect: one tends to write simple, non-crossing lines for each voice; and the visual effect of pairing soprano/alto and tenor/bass tends to make one think of those pairs when writing small duets within the overall piece -- vice a tenor-alto duet, for example. On the other hand, writing in open score is more time consuming, even with software, and makes it more difficult (for me!) to catch errors and see how the harmonic progressions are working. And, an open score piece will easily require many pages to print, which is a bummer for composer and performer!

I think Tchaikovsky's Morning Prayer (a piano piece) is written like a short score, it's really pretty

It’s very unusual to write a tenor part in the alto clef.

It's always a bit confusing having Tenor-part being able to be written with a G-clef or a C-clef....and they're both called "Tenor Clef". But so few recognize or can read Tenor C-clef that is better to use the sub-octave Treble G-clef.
@MusicMattersGB2 жыл бұрын
The G clef is not called the Tenor Clef. Context is everything eg in an open vocal score the tenors would sing from treble clef with the 8 relocating the octave, whereas a cello in the orchestra would use the Tenor C clef.
@tedb.57072 жыл бұрын
@@MusicMattersGB My apologies for creating confusion. Here in the US both G-clefs notations are casually referred-to as Tenor-clef; the G-clef with sub-8. or the dbl'd G-clef sign. The C-clef Tenor notation is rarely used except for professional scores. Lots of guitar music here in notated in the Tenor G-clef, so it's familiar to most musicians here. For guitars often it's not even notated, but assumed by the publisher to be commonly understood to play one-octave lower. It's one reason I've been enjoying your videos, to gain a more professional and thorough understanding of music theory. My music education 45-years ago left huge gaps. Please keep up the good works.

One thing you forgot to mention. Changes between open and short score preferably arranged on page turns to bamboozle the tenors. Tongue in cheek by bamboozled tenor. Tee hee!

Why on earth isnt tenor written in Tenor Clef? isnt that what it is for?
@MusicMattersGB3 жыл бұрын
Years ago the tenor part was often written in the tenor clef and the alto part in the alto clef but for some considerable time now vocal writing has almost universally been reduced to treble and bass clef for ease. Some instruments still use the alto and tenor clefs.
