Listen to Lounge Fly Pro Shot 2010. I wouldn't say it's their best necessarily but man, Lounge Fly never caught my attention until I heard that live performance. BTW it was in 2010 when scott wasn't in his peak he was in the 90's but not in this occasion

Robert is a highly under rated bass player and Scott's vocals made STP such an amazing band.

I started playing bass in 1993 and Robert DeLeo has been one of my favorites the whole time. He's criminally underrated in bass circles.

Love this 7 BY series, STP never deserved to be hated and they have crazy talent. R.I.P. Scott Weiland. Would love to see a 7 BY Guster. I see you’ve never done a Guster reaction, and those guys deserve some attention from you.

@@chrisburrelljr9270 It’s more that people believed they were a Pearl Jam ripoff when their first album came out. Also, accusing them of wanting to make grunge mainstream.
@AaronLitz
@AaronLitz 11 ай бұрын
@@chrisburrelljr9270 A lot of critics and others called them bandwagon-jumpers who just sounded like "generic grunge" who were ripping off Pearl Jam and Nirvana, apparently because they didn't have ears and/or never actually bothered to listen to more than one or two of STP's songs, because they don't actually sound much at all like those other two (fantastic) bands other than having a similar early '90s sound because of the fact that they were all young men of similar ages and with similar musical inspirations. Plus it was the first album from a three year old band in a newly emerging genre/style of music, so accusations of copying are going to happen; it was just _way_ overdone for STP. _So_ many critics must have only listened to their first single _Sex Type Thing_ and went no further, and then claimed that Scott Weiland was just trying to copy Eddie Vedder. It was so bad that in 1994 Rolling Stone's critics labelled them the "Worst New Band" while in the exact same issue the readers voted them "Best New Band!" It was mostly just critics who wanted to be smug and dismissive so they could seem "hip" by quickly lumping together any early '90s bands as nothing but Pearl Jam Grunge rip-offs and write them all off. ("Oh, you like _them?_ They're so lame, they're just ripping off Pearl Jam because that's what's big right now.") They even got compared to Alice in Chains, which I hardly even consider Grunge at all. Thankfully by the time their second album _Purple_ (紫) came out the attacks had mostly gone away, because the critics were forced to listen to more than just the first two songs from _Core_ and realized that STP definitely had it's own distinct sound.

Robert DeLeo is the true genius of the band. In addition to his Motown-inspired bass playing, he was responsible for writing some of their best songs. He brought a real jazz influence to the band that set them apart from other acts of their era. You can hear him talk about his influences and chord choices in many interviews.

When talking about Stone Temple Pilots everybody always seems to just bring up and react to _Plush_ and _Interstate Love Song_ and maybe _Vasoline,_ and don't get me wrong those are great songs, but _Big Empty_ is _absolutely_ STP's best song as far as I am concerned. I can sit in the dark and listen to this song over and over. I am so glad to finally see someone give it the attention and respect it deserves. The movie they put this in was _The Crow,_ which is almost definitely the greatest film soundtrack ever. Again, I can just sit in the dark and listen to it pretty much straight through. From Trent Reznor's cover of _Dead Souls_ to Machines of Loving Grace's _Golgotha Tenement Blues_ to Violent Femmes' _Color Me Once_ to Medicine's _Time Baby III_ to the end with Jane Siberry's _It Can't Rain All the Time,_ it's all just a fantastic ride of mellow melancholy.

Stp has been my favorite band of all time for the last 15 years now and the reason being that every music seems to be unique and well crafted, more than most bands. I dom't know music theory or techniques and such but having someone that understands music from inside out makes me feel proud of my music taste, lol.

The MTV unplugged performances of the early and mid 90's are forever etched in my brain and latched onto my heart. We didn't know then that it was the swan song for MTV, everything after this was just filler and reality garbage. I count myself fortunate to see these when they aired, Pearl Jam, AIC, Nirvana, STP... those performances pretty much silenced any critics of grunge.

I saw them live in 99-2000 During the Family Values tour and I was blown away. I was introduced to other bands that came out and performed with them throughout their set to include Aaron Lewis and Chester Bennington and then in turn watched Scott weilend com out during their sets. All bands were amazing and I became a huge fan even though I originally was already a huge fan of STP.

I have only one gripe about this, David. I am a HUGE STP fan and I am also a shredder. Playing lots of notes has NOTHING to do with "ego". It only appears that way to snobs and other gatekeeping types. We play lots of notes because we either love the aesthetics of a certain genre of music(usually metal) or it's cathartic. I am SO tired of this idiotic trope about "more notes='ego'." Can't folks just play what they feel?
@MusicShed
@MusicShed Жыл бұрын
I do agree Jim. Very good point here. I think that we as fans can feel when something played is from the heart or is played to show off or get applause. I guess that maybe my underlying belief is that fewer notes and more melodic playing is generally more soulful and heartfelt. But obviously, that is not true. You got me thinking today Jim, thank you.
