The thing is, The Islander - as a song in itself - isn't that big of a deal compared to some other Nightwish songs. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's great but it's never really been at the top for me. That performance at Tampere, though... Gosh. They made an OK or good song into a true masterpiece, with just the arrangement, just the way they played that same song. Absolutely ubelievable. Marco is leading on the vocals with the whole band backing him up, just... amazing.

@@BudhagRizzo I think these are the two most understated moments of this performance. Both are really impactful-- Tuomas' face while he's singing along and how they went over to support. I mean I don't blame them because you can't expect everyone to know the backstory behind this.

That is a signature Floor move that we call the windmill. Floor is Dutch. This is a deep song for Tuomas the songwriter. You nailed it 3 minutes until the end of Tuomas. This song is dealing with the firing of the 1st Nightwish vocalist, Tarja. The fans loved her and Tuomas received lots of complaints from the fans which sent him into depression. He contemplated suicide when he though it might be the end of Nightwish and this led him to write this song about him manic depression and guilt for the firing. thank God he wrote this song about a musical suicide instead of the real thing.
@music2seeconcertphotograph4574 жыл бұрын
Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time. As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his in ears turned off during the spoken passages.

@@TheMuserResolute Tuomas depression is easily explicable: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGOpqJedj9abr8k , knowing that he knew Tarja since Highschool and obviously has had a little crush on her - unfortunately her manager (now husband) was unbearable for the whole band.
@music2seeconcertphotograph4574 жыл бұрын
@Johan I am not 100% sure, so you may be right. I'll have a look. Thanx for your reply.
@MacZussie4 жыл бұрын
There is a counterpart to this song. While "Poet and the Pendulum" reveals Tuomas' feeling about the break-up with Tarja its foil "Master Passion Greed" reflects his feel towards her "manager" (former lover, now husband). Needless to say to expect a complete diss-track sung by Marco! Nightwish never played that song live and never will afaik, because the emotions have vanished over time. So people need to rely on the studio version...the one with lyrics to get the whole sharpness.

Greetings from Finland & welcome to the international family of Nightwish fans. Just wait until more members of the Nightwish army troopers discover your channel. P.S. Their current female lead vocalist since 2012 (official member since 2013), Floor Jansen, joined her first metal band "After Forever" at age 16 as a backing vocalist, but soon became the lead vocalist. When After Forever disbanded, she formed her own metal band "ReVamp" before being asked to join Nightwish. She's also featured on many other bands'/artists' records simply because she's one of the most versatile & best vocalists there are in the world of popular music. P.S.S. To show Tuomas' attention to detail in composing songs, if you start a timer during this song when the young boy speaks the words "Now I only have three minutes..." and stop it when Tuomas makes a hand gesture of cutting his throat, the timer will show 3 minutes, give or take a few seconds depending on how you actually managed to start & stop the timer.

"Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones. -> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look!! at the growls. You'll be surprised.) -> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional) -> „Weak Fantasy“ (Tampere): Kai the beastat the drums, Troy joins in, great duets with Floor and Marco, ... -> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) is epic as "The Poet and the Pendulu" -> Then the new stuff from thei current album with "Noise" (awesome Video), „Shoemaker“ (takes you to the stars), "Harvest (Lyric Video, you will not believe you listen to Nightwish), Tribal (very heavy and with an incredible "dance part") ...

One of the best Poet and the Pendulum reactions I've seen. Most of the time, people encourage reactors to research the backstory behind this song before listening, and in a lot of cases, that does add a lot to the reaction, but sometimes, and this is definitely one of those cases, often when it's a reactor who has a lot to offer when it comes to feedback about the music, it is better to come at it fresh so that you can just focus on what an incredible piece of music this is, what an amazing composition, rather than spending all your energy focused on appreciating how Tuomas just ripped his ribcage open and gave you a good look at his heart and soul. Don't worry about pausing, pause as much as you want (You do push it back most of the time, which is good). There are 2 main kinds of reactors. People who enjoy music and we like to watch them experience a piece of music we love for the first time along with them... those kinds of reactors, it's best if they don't pause too much. People like you, who really know what you're talking about and can offer real, valuable, interesting feedback and analysis about what is going on, you guys should pause as much as you want. On this kind of reaction, yes, we want to see you experience the music with us, and your facial expressions are priceless when your doors are being blown off, but your insight is terrific and best given in the moment, not talking over the music. Thanks for this one, I really enjoyed it.

Great reaction. Love your expressions. Ghost river, seven days to the wolves and devil and the deep dark ocean are dramatic, powerful and amazing. Would love to see your reaction to them. Thank you 😀

I think a great song for you to tackle next would be Everdream at Wacken. It's got insane belty Floor and it does a good job of showing off Marco's voice

tuomas, the guy on the keyboards, is the composer. this album and this song in particular is what he credits to saving his mental health. this is him pouring out his heart and soul and it's spectacular.

The head move is 'windmill', common alternative to just head banging. Signature moves for all metal music.

It was great taking the Nightwish ride with you. What a band. Holopainen is the 21st century Jean Sibelius, or what Jean would be composing had he been around now. Sibelius, Tuomas, you been working on anything? Sure, J.S., there's this one. Sibelius, saying damned sweet, kid.

Another great reaction! Regarding your question about the hair thing, when Floor does it it's called a "Dutch Windmill". ;-)

Great reaction video! Thank you! This song is such a beautiful masterpiece that it gets me every time - goosebumps, chills and tears. But what is just as big is the story BEHIND the song. When you understand this, it becomes even more moving. I see that others have explained this story in these comments.

the "Signature" is called headbanging ... i think at least that is something anyone knews xD never seen someone who doesnt im flabbergasted xD
@Smido833 жыл бұрын
Nope... not headbanging. Its windmilling. Headbanging is flipping your hair up and down. Windmilling is rotating your head fast so your hair goes in a full circle. And Floor is the masterclas of it. I mean, if the Netherlands are famous for one thing, its windmills. ;)

You got it, the throat slash motion was at exactly 3 minutes after the 3 minute lyric. You need to react to Ghost River same show!!

I thoroughly enjoyed your explanations and comments, I loved your feel for this amazing work of art, your respect for it and these incredible artists. None of our words can convey the extraordinary emotional experience of their performance's. I am 69 years old and have been going to concerts for 57 years, I'm a great grandfather of four, This music has allowed me to feel things in ways that were always there just out of reach of my mind (or my heart). I am more then a fan I am grateful, Its nice to meet a fellow traveler.

I loved the way how you guided us through the whole composition. The intensity in how you inhaled the whole performance. Your suprise when the bass guitarist started to sing. The setup in a cellar and its dark background, the dark clothes you wear is totally in synch with the performance we see on the video. For me you became the perfect Nightwish reactor. Looking forward to the next reaction.

You're good, you see what needs to be seen and I cannot wait til you do The Greatest Show on Earth. That one is usually held off for awhile until one is acclaimated to Nightwish but you do not need this as you understand and greatly appreciate good music. Great music. But...so many songs...some short some long and all in between, and so diverse from one another. I just know you are forever thankful to whatever and whoever turned you on and got you to react to this most awsome band.. \m/

Thank you for listening to 'Nightwish', and for giving your opinion on the band and the singers. It's great to see another Australian and one who is a musical and vocal teacher - most vocal coaches who do reaction videos to bands and singers like 'Nightwish' are American or from Europe, not Australia, so your channel and analysis is a refreshing change!
@TheMuserResolute4 жыл бұрын
Thank you soo much for watching :) I'm not a vocal teacher like the others (So i don't have as big as an understanding of the technicalities behind vocals), but i really love analysing the compositions! Thanks again :)

The great thing is, there are a few dozen more great Nightwish songs from Wacken, Wembley, Tampere, and Bueno's Aires to go and each one is uniquely different but all superb.

Got another Finnish band for you to check out: "Apocalyptica". I'd recommend "Faraway" (my all-time favourite by them) - preferably the original version, but there is a Vol II with vocals by Linda Sundblad. You're up for a treat: it's Metal, played by Cellos.

I actually much prefer it when reactors, especially when they're teachers/professionals, pause to share their thoughts. If I were just wanting to watch the video again, I'd watch it again, not a reaction vid!

The concert in Buenos Aires 2018, it has many nightwish songs, compiles from old albums.. Resung by fl0or Jansen and his results.. Perfecto. Here comes the true nightwish. Between vocal voices and music may go together..

As a music teacher is this something that you will suggest to your students to listen to? The lyrics, the music, the composition, the ebb and flow. the theatrics. This is just music at it's absolute finest! It would just be a shame for students of music to not know that a modern day masterpiece called Nightwish exists.
