I was literally speechless. Watching this was a very lovely and moving experience for me. It's all that music should be and I loved it! Nightwish is amazing!
In The Poet and the Pendulum, Floor Jansen has complete command over her voice (and the audience!)
Her vocal colors and amazing tones tell this beautiful story in her own unique way.
Her vocal bridges are aligned and her vowels are great which gives her a ton of power and confidence and a unique palette of tones.
She has mastered the belt/mix! And her head voice is beautiful!!

Absolutely! I downright love how enthusiastic you are about music. But I totally get why: I have been a huge Nightwish fan ever since "Angels fall first" was released. When Tarja left the band (to put it mildly XD) I was completely devastated. I truly d all the new singers and believed my favourite bands gone. Then, eventually, Floor entered the band. Her voice and talent add so much to the music. I never would have thought I could accept any singer in this band except for Tarja. Now I'm worried day by day that Floor might quit - the one singer so far that I admire even more than Tarja (and by a long shot that is to say)

Neither this song nor Ghost love score was made for Floor while Gratest show on Earth was made for her and it is a long song which is the whole video so the song does not end when many believe. Marko I haven't heard with Floor in Phantom but he did it with Tarja which is a very good song with. But if you want to hear more from him I would recommend The Islander from the same gig as above and also 7 Days to the Wolves, and While your lips are still red. But they released a new album in April and many good songs there that you can respond to but the Shoemaker is one that you need some background but there are certainly more people here who write about it

I see you caught the hand gesture Tuomas makes when the pendulum descends. It may be interesting to know that's exactly three minutes after the line "Now I only have three minutes and counting" which references the last minutes before the firing of Tarja would be a fact. Even years later the song is one that still affects Tuomas deeply, and it's why you can see both Marco and Empu checking in on him, hovering around his keyboards throughout the song. As a true artist, he turned his pain into beautiful art while baring his soul to the world.

You just EXPERIENCED Nightwish, after having brought Floor (and Troy) on board. This shows the power of music - when it is done by 6 musicians in that caliber. Great reaction from you - and you were not prepared for Nightwish at their best - but you did really really good. Remember - Tuomas is not a songwriter - he is a composer, the Beethoven of Metal. And Floor - well - she is just Floor - and she just keeps on evolving. She has her own scale now - as Troy puts it: Her Stratospheric voice. Troy invented that expression at Troy's and Floor's promotion tour early this year, and they performed "How is the Heart" acoustic at Planet Rock (on KZbin) - that's phenomenal. But the next to react to, should be The Greatest Show on Earth, Tampere 2015, - it's about the evolution from big bang and up maybe destruction. Great reaction from you 👍 🤘 🤘

As a vocalist and student of a great teacher I connect to you. Not only by the way you connect to my favorite band Nightwish with Floor , but also enjoy your insight into great voices. There is no doubt, by anyone who has witnessed Floor Jansen (yan-sen), that she ranks among the most versatile voices on the planet. As someone that has sung in hard rock since 1984, I would have sworn the greatest female in rock would have been Ann Wilson of Heart. As awesome (from the perspective of an American not exposed to European singers) as Ann is, and that she is, Floor is the complete package. Witnessing her on a small stage in Denver Colorado my heart and ears fell in love with her power, stage presence and grace. Welcome to the “Floorgasm” family.

This song was part of the Dark Passion Play album and at the time it was written, there was no lead singer for Nightwish, so Tuomas just wrote what he wrote. In 2007 Anette Olzen was brought in as the lead vocalist, but she didn't have the range to sing the high passages of this song. Those sections were filled in by boy sopranos. Guy Elliot sings part one and in the original, also the section that Floor sings in this rendition, "Sparkle my scenery". When Floor joined Nightwish, she told Tuomas that she could handle all of the boy soprano parts, but Tuomas wanted some of them left in place, so we hear the opening and the spoken parts still done by boy sopranos. Floor sings "Sparkle my scenery" with the light, slightly unstable inflection of a boy soprano.

Floor is a very good storyteller, but instead of just telling the story, she makes the story come to live with her approach of singing the lyrics. I don't know if that makes sense, but it's the way I feel it and experience it over and over again. And it even doesn't matter in which language she sings, she makes a grown man cry, period.

I'm sure people have given you info on Floor's background, but in case they haven't, here's the short of it: after highschool Floor went to the Rock Academy in Tilburg, the Netherlands, but soon found out that she didn't really fit in there. That's mainly because she enjoyed singing at a high pitch, in that sort of operatic style that you've mentioned, and she wanted to do more with that and learn more about how to do that and do it well, in other words safely. But you can imagine that's not really something they teach at a school for pop and rock music. By that time she was already in a band that would become After Forever, first as a background singer and then later as lead singer and involved in the songwriting process. Her interest in school was reinvigorated when a new teacher came to the Rock Academy who had a background in musical theater. I would say that's where she developed her nack for theatrics in her voice, style and podium presence. After the Rock Academy she studied opera at the concervatory in Tilburg for one year, which is the extend of her "classic training". By that time After Forever was becoming relatively successful so her focus was more on that. Floor had a serious burn-out around 2011-2012, mainly due to the breaking up of After Forever and because things weren't all smooth sailing with her new band ReVamp. That experience has taught her that she needs a good balance between touring and being on stage on one hand, and a quiet private family life on the other. Thankfully Nightwish is able to provide her with that, despite the long tours they do where they go all over the world. Here is part of a Dutch tv show about college reunions where I got most of that information from. It's a reunion of her freshman class at the Rock Academy and has English subtitles: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGSxepmrZdapqsk

The Poet and the Pendulum, The Greatest Show on Earth, Love Ghost Score, etc., I can't say they were everything I want music to be, I didn't even know that music could exist. Just to expand a bit. The song was originally recorded with Annette, the second singer after Tarja (Tar-ya). Annette didn't have the same range as Floor (or Tarja), so the "sparkle my scenery..." section was also sung by a (different) boy soprano. I think the very last part was sung by a female soprano, too. As I understand it, Floor took over two of the soprano roles, as well as all the rest of the song, and offered to do the first section, too, but I believe Tuomas wanted to keep it as the boy soprano (Guy Elliot)'s voice.

It would be rewarding for you to watch her several performances on that show, as it showcases her versatility......she inhabits each song she does...in different genres and in different languages. My god, to have a voice like that. What a gift. And she’s done the hard work to hone it into a precision instrument. There are many amazing female singers in the world today, but I honestly have not heard one who can do so much with her voice, from opera, to a soft, lilting lullaby to a metal growl. Good Lord.

"And then you're left with this feeling that you really want to sit with". Yeah, I very rarely listen to a Nightwish album from start to finish for that reason. Some songs are so powerful you can't just jump straight to the next one. Most of the time I'll listen to 2-3 and then I'll be stuck with that 3rd song on repeat for a while. They cap off the last show with an amazing rendition of Phantom of the Opera with with Henk Poort, (who played in the Phantom in the Netherlands production.

This song is draining. I mean absolutely exhausting. What a rollercoaster. I mean, we can talk about how great Floor is, or the song composition, or the intricacies of the instruments, but I don't think we need to. You reacted perfectly. There is no real need to talk about and discuss it because you FEEL it. What a MASTERPIECE.

I'm seeing this video more than a year after you published it. But better a late reaction than none I think. If you are trying to comprehend how the audience should cope with a 14 minute songe, keep in mind that in the 2015 Wembley setlist, Ghost Love Score (10+ mins) and The greatest show on Earth (22+ mins) were also included. That's almost an hour for 3 songs!! I'm lucky enough to see them live in Amsterdam coming November, but I'm pretty sure these 3 masterpieces won't be on the set list. At least not all of them. Maybe Ghost Love Score, cause that one is Floor's favorite. But I would love to see all three live.

As you'll see as you keep experiencing Nightwish, Floor and Marco are a vocal match made in heaven. He was great with Tarja, had to hold back at times with Anette as not to over power her, but with Floor I think he's found his ideal singing partner. Because she's got such a powerful and versatile voice he doesn't have to hold back.

The first movement is a boy singing, London Choir I believe? In the studio version, he sings twice. Floor sings the second part of it live here in the third movement ("Sparkle ..."). Tuomas refers to himself a lot as Dead Boy (loss of childlike innocence). It was important for him to have the boy sing the first part, even though Floor is capable of it. Dead Boy is the narrator of that part and the whispered bits. I really enjoy your insight and reactions!

I get emotional every time I see this appearance in Wembley. One of the best from Nightwish. Thanks for your great videos. You are doing great. Marko is a wonderful singer, but Troy also sings. Marko and Troy made a beautiful acoustic version of "Wonderfull World". I tell you, you still have so much to discover with Nighwish. One of my favorite songs is "Dead Boy´s Poem". If you want to hear Nightwish really "hard", then I recommend "Yours is an empty hope", "Slaying the Dreamer" and "Romanticide". Of course all videos only with Floor. The earlier singers were great too, but that's the past. We live in the present and Floor is a goddess.

The voice in the beginning is Guy Elliott, a treble (aka boy soprano) and comes from a backing track edit: and the bassists name is Marko (Marco) Hietala, if you've seen Nightwish's rendition of Phantom of the Opera that's Tarja, Nightwish's original female lead, and Marco.

How do I take it as an audience member? I cry. Every time. Often unconsciously. The feelings are too many to keep them in and I find myself in tears too often, the kind of tears you notice only when you feel them flowing on your face. I feel their music and lyrics too deeply, they have so much emotion within and their shows are a true experience and journey, if only one truly abandons themselves to it. I totally understand your reaction, it's such a powerful piece and it's hard not to be moved by it in some way.

Another fun reaction, though as others have noted, in the first section is a boy soprano not Floor. I'm going to cross post my song suggestions because I think they have interesting technical aspects in the vocals that you won't necessarily get from the fan favourites the rest of the Nightwish army will continue requesting: Nightwish - Dead Boy's Poem live from Buenos Aires 2018 ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWmoZH9tnMx_g68 ) is a great performance for showing Floor's ability to almost continuously alter her vocal configuration to smooth out the transitions between vocal colours. In her older performances she mostly tends to shift colours line to line, but here you will hear her configuration shift much more frequently, but it smaller steps. Nightwish - How's the Heart live acoustic for Planet Rock ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4rXnIOme76thdE ) is another great one for showing Floor's ability to shift various aspects of her vocal configuration in real time. Also shows her deliberately using some pretty challenging configurations to achieve certain stylistic effects. It's a very technically demanding song to perform live in an acoustic format. Nightwish - Your's is an Empty Hope live from the Nightwish Cruise ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqW7ooiEd52tqLc ) Floor shows off her ability to do a false cord growl (it's her growling in the chorus) and some pretty hardcore distortion. And of course her take on Phantom of the Opera with Henk Poort is worth watching, especially if you appreciate all the subtle things she does with her interpretation to enhance the dynamic range of the piece.

This song will go down as one of the best songs (and symphonic metal) of the modern era. When you hear this song live, in-person..it hits you like a truck. Marko Hietala is a legit legend in his own right. The guy has been around the European metal scene since the 80's with his band Tarot, and later he joined Nightwish. He also has solo records which are worth checking out. He is also a really great, funny guy who just loves music and performing. Also, have you listen/ seen The Phantom of the Opera with Tarja?

Greetings from Finland & congrats for a great and informative reaction. After two of their most epic songs you simply cannot miss the 3rd one: Nightwish - The Greatest Show On Earth Live - (Legendado PT/Br) kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4Wkknh-nqydrLc And in case you want to do some research, this is a great article: Why Nightwish’s “The Greatest Show on Earth” is also one of the greatest songs medium.com/option-x/why-nightwishs-the-greatest-show-on-earth-is-also-one-of-the-greatest-songs-dfc703f658a3 P.S. I cannot listen to this song without bawling my eyes out at the end... and that's amazing, not many songs can achieve that for me. As someone who appreciates theatrics... how awesome is that pendulum swinging constantly in the background? I can't help but be mesmerized by it... it actually seems to have force behind it and somehow it compliments the song imho. (Yes, I'm speaking as though I know things. No, I do not know anything about singing, or performing in general, but I can appreciate a great show.) I can tell you are an amazing lover of music, aside from being a voice teacher. This is a reaction, it might not be what you normally do after watching a video in terms of talking, but a genuine reaction will please your audience a lot and I feel like you delivered that magnificently. Floor sings in the Floor style of singing and it will leave you Floored. Also, I'm not sure how many times Floor has done Phantom yet, at least not recorded for KZbin videos. There's a good chance you saw the version with Tarja instead. She did sing it on Beste Zangers, but I know you're already aware of that, I saw it in the comments of Ghost Love Score and I'm sure I'd find it on this video as well. Please do check out Beste Zangers though, not just Floor, but a lot of them are absolutely amazing to listen to. Phantom just absolutely blew up during that show because of the magnificent performance they gave.
