This was definitely the turning point in the competition TV micromanages even reality shows so Austin and Tim were chosen by the producers to be the stars. Home Free was already an organization with Darren Rust as a producer and sometimes arranger recording all of their music winning the Sing Off gave them more exposure and a recording contract but that also brought further complications so later they bought their own contract back so the fans could share their music more easily.

Love this version of "Ring Of Fire" from the "Sing Off". After this song you knew they had won the competition hands down. You can see how talented they were already back then. Hard to believe they have only gotten better. Tim is a true bass who sounds natural going low. It does not look like it takes any effort. He blew the judges away with his super low note. And Adam's beatboxing is stellar as always. Love how humble the guys are & supportive of each other. No divas in this group. The show was constantly pushing to only highlight Austin & Tim but the guys were not happy about it & had Rob do the lead in "Colder Weather".

It's a reality show so things go the way the producers want. They wanted Austin and Tim to be the highlighted singers. They also wanted the group to have a lead (which they never did) They weren't country but the producers wanted them to lean into the country songs they did. And to the producers, country meant facial hair and obvious country style clothing. And when Rob did lead a song, the producers didn't like it. Our boys stuck to their guns and the judges got nitpicky on them. But we know better.
@lrfcowper Жыл бұрын
The thing about Rob is, I feel, his singing has the most emotional intelligence and emotional range. There's just something about his voice that pulls you in, and makes you believe.

The protective part will kick in later in the show. Thanks for your reactions! Fun fact: They were not a country band until the Sing Off. They sang a wide variety and none of it was country. The producers said if they performed as a country acapella group that they would probably win. That's when they had to quick learn country. Austin and Tim helped with the learning curve. Thanks again!
@MN_Home_Fry Жыл бұрын
They actually did a little country, or at least country adjacent. It happened that one of the songs used to audition was countryish so the producers asked them about being a "country" band on the show. They had to brush off another country song which HF hadn't performed for quite awhile to complete the audition. It has been nice that since they have "made it", while most of what they do is countryish, HF feels the freedom to do other music types as well.
@nanadeborah8717 Жыл бұрын
@@MN_Home_Fry If you watch the series on Chris Rupp's channel,they had done a country song per request at a private gig one time. Life is a Highway was a rock song in its inception. They had not ever been a country group until The Sing Off.

I’m putting out my suggestions for my favorite HF Christmas songs. “Do You Hear What I Hear “. Adam did the arrangement for it and it’s outstanding! I never cared for this song, but HF has made me love it! “Angels We Have Heard On High “. Angelic Rob is highlighted here. It’s a very sophisticated arrangement, and just beautiful. “Oh Holy Night “. There is a stunning crescendo near the end. “ What Christmas Means to Me “. Pop Rob gets to cut loose, and the goofiness is unleashed in the video. If you REALLY want to hear Rob cut loose, I recommend HF 2013 at the Hosanna concert singing the carol “Joy to the World “. Gospel Rob is on full display, and there’s an incredible beatbox breakdown.

Just a warning. The higher ups on the show only wanted Austin and Tim to sing lead. It wasn't Home Free's choice. And, when they went against wishes and had Rob sing a lead, they were punished with not so good reviews. A lot of stuff went on that was controlling. They didn't even want the boys to get haircuts or shave. Wanted that " scruffy country look". Home Free finally had enough and started to be a bit rebellious. ( That's when they said " Rob is singing".)They even included it in one of the beginning parts before a performance.

Unfortunately, You never really get Rob or Chris highlighted much in the show. Because it is a competition style format and the producers want the groups going for the "wow" factor with each performance, the highs and lows (esp tim since he was so much lower than the competition) are put forward with the middle voices primarily providing support.

You talked about VP being in this year, they really were nothing close to what they have become. A different lineup put together just for the show and Geoff was nowhere near the base he is now.
