Checking Frozen Wolf Traps With Jeff

Winter brings all sorts of problems with it for the trapper. Bad roads, and cold feet, are one thing, but when your traps are frozen to the ground,....well, that's too much! Nothing worse than finding tracks on top of a frozen trap!
There's ways to fix this problem, but that will be another day!

Central Michigan here, I had a similar thing happen to me once on the Boardman river in Traverse City. While kayaking with the family my son found an old trap half submerged. It was tripped and had some sort of critter fur in it. I yanked on the trap to free it from the debris and it snapped throwing fur guts in mouth and face. I say, based on my experience, you got of lucky with just dirt... LOL.

Those fox or coyote tracks that are not readily identified as either one, i call cox tracks. Or that thats what my tracking buddies and i call them anyway. Big fox, small coyote? Pretty hard to tell sometimes till you follow or back track it and see what its been upto. Those traps were sloooow😂. Kind funny to see that.

I'll get them back out before too long. Now that the flies are gone, I need to finish the ones I've got. Right now, they are in the freezer.

It is. I should have used waxed dirt, but really, I need to get the ones I got taken out of the freezer now that the flies are gone anyway. I'll get them re-set before too long.

Stick a couple live yard birds in a box trap by your wolf traps bet somethig would show up to investigate those birds cackling.

How quickly the weather can change in the mountains , this is the time of the year that you may be able to get by with wax paper under them that always help me until the big freeze comes. Good luck !!

That's for sure! I've used waxed paper, and all sorts of stuff. Nothing seems to work all of the time, but that waxed sand is the best I've found so far. It works most of the time! One problem we have here is the freeze thaw cycle. It's better to either stay frozen, or thaw out. When it thaws in the day and freezes at night, it's hard to keep them working.

The snow changes everything doesn't it. That waxed sand might have saved all those sets, What do you think ? Back in the stone age, when I trapped a tiny bit, I never even heard of waxed sand. Ha😅 . Have a Great Day 😊

It would have. That stuff works great! Until a few years ago, I had never heard of it either. It was always a fight to keep traps working, but not so bad using it.

Thats what I hate about footholds. Its a lot of work to reset them. I don't use to many anymore but there was a time when I strictly used traps and not snares. Now i use a lot more snares. Best wishes my Friend.

They can sure be a problem. Snares aren't legal here until November 15th. I don't think the power ram snares you have are legal here at all, but I'm not 100% sure. Snares here have to have a stop, or a break away. I don't think those rams have that do they? Do they even have a snare lock or just a loop? I'd be afraid to use them here even if legal. We have a lot of hound hunters after mountain lions here.

@@MuskratOutdoors the snares for the power rams have a breakaway but not a lock. When that powerful spring pops open and slides down the snare, that acts as the lock.

We actually had snow today in Illinois! I'm the ground freezes before my season starts so I don't have to fight mud like last year! Good luck when you put the traps back out my friend!

Looks like winter has finally arrived in your neck of the forest. We got the first frost last night. Cold sure changes everything. Maybe the snow will make it easier to find more wolves to catch. Good luck out there👍👍

You can. The trouble is that they cover a LOT of ground fast. Finding tracks means they were there, but they probably aren't now.....even so, it would be well worth a try!

Better let the ground freeze good before setting out any more leg holds. Are the timber companies harvesting that dead timber? Just curious.

I'll re-set them with some waxed dirt soon. Nope. All that timber is just standing there useless. The Forest Service hasn't done many timber sales here in years, and there's not many big sawmills to take it to anymore anyway. We have a local one that has just started up, and a one man sawmill that is small scale, but that's it. No wonder plywood is $100 a sheet!

It does. It makes everything harder. Even if they aren't frozen down, sometimes the snow is just too deep. Then there's tracks, both yours and theirs. People find and steal your traps easier, and critters are wary if there's too much disturbance.
