have you read lauren van der post on the cooking of south africa in a time-life series on the cuisines of the world? i was intrigued by his accounts of the foods developed by the malay kitchen staff of white gentlefolk, especially the snook/snoek cooked with lemon leaves. did they have citrus hystrix growing on the cape or did they substitute local lemon leaves? there is a word of south african origin that people use w/o understanding the baggage attached to ''kaffir lime''. what foods from south africa do you really miss? one of the many failures i have had has been to bring to india strains of eland selected for milk production by the soviet union in ukraine. whether they still survive is a matter of personal pain and regret. the decades spent in ukraine have led to their becoming free of rinderpest and several other dangerous infectious agents very common in the wild forms of this wonderful species [more than one species, in fact].

Kokum sirbat❤️❤️ U can make Sol kadhi from that Kokum agal. Also sometimes put carrom seeds (ajwain) little bit in besan dishes specially when u make vada, onion or potato bhaji it will prevent u get bloat, gases, and helps in digestion… but use very little as they taste little bitter and spicy. If u want to eat fennel seeds do try roast them and then have it…

@@Shortleft_Travels could you try making these please: 1. Rice Kheer 2.Aloo & Pyaz Pakora 3.Bread aloo Pakora 4. Paneer Burji 5. Gajar Halwa with Khoya (Gajar = carrots 🥕) 6. Aate ka Halwa (a.k.a Karaah Parshad in punjabi & served in Sikh Temple)(aata = wheat) 7. Suji ka halwa 8. Khichdi with green moong dal (not yellow dal) I've written all the veg only, if you'd like I'll write non veg too ... Please try making this and I wonder how many of this you'll be taking to south africa with you for lifelong 👍🏻 especially khichdi which is extremely helpful and healthy, moms give this to children when they are sick or having upset stomach so that kids can regain bodily strength quickly also it is the only permissible food by doctors allowing to be brought by patient's family in hospitals as it can be had without chewing and for all ages (although people bring all kinds of foods without permission)
