5 Albums I would listen too if I wanted to show someone what the genre of hip hop is. No particular order 1. Paid In Full 2. Illmatic 3. Low End Theory 4. It Takes a Nations of Millions To Hold Us Back 5. Either Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers or Straight Outta Compton. These literally I think are the top 5-6 albums in Hip Hop of all-time. This will help the person by first starting with older, classic albums. Also, it kind of covers everything in the genre. Illmatic, to me is the greatest hip hop album full of concepts, storytelling and straight lyricism. Paid In Full was Illmatic before Illmatic and Rakim is the greatest MC. Low End Theory is the best jazz rap or new jack rap there is (though 3 Feet and Rising is close behind). Plus Low End Theory is easily the most cohesive, smoothest hip hop album, it's awesome. It Takes a Nation is the best PE album and the best political rap album ever. Plus, when you are easily the best album in 1988! ( which had depending on the person 12-15 CLASSIC albums, easily the best year in hip hop and this album was easily the best, which I have to repeat considering albums like Straight Outta Compton, Critical Beatdown, Follow the Leader, Long Live the Kane, etc..) . Enter the Wu, I thought because it was what really made the gangsta rap really popular (though G Rap was the first gangsta rap MC to be a legend). I will say this. People NEVER give credit to Black Moon's Enta Da Stage! That actually came out before Wu-Tang and that album is in my top 15-20. I think Enta Da Stage is better than Reasonable Doubt, but, I digress. I could have added Straight Outta Compton, with it being first on the west coast, gangsta rap, but also political rap. So either or between 36 Chambers and SOC.

IMO it's best to listen to an artist's early shit before you get to their current work - Don't listen to Recovery/ MMLP2 and then go listen to MMLP/ The Eminem Show - Don't listen to Life is Good if you've never heard Illmatic - Don't listen to Yeezus if you've never heard of The College Dropout/ Late Registration - Listen to Tupac before Deathrow - IMO Kendrick is 3-0 but listen to GKMC before TPAB so that you can get who he is

Just starting with hip hop? I recommend the kanye era and the likes, like common, kweli, mos def, j dilla any similar artists. Then you can move on to the oldschool version of those sounds like a tribe called quest, de la soul, arrested development, Pete Rock, pharcyde, outkast and any similar artists. By now, you should have a decent appreciation for hip hop, enough to start listening to oldschool hip hop from the gutter New York legends and start with the Wu, work your way to Nas. After that, show the same love to the west coast and start with nwa and work your way 2 Pac. You are now a well rounded hip hop head and you can go way back to when hip hop started to learn more. After that, you now have the ear for good hip hop music and can finally listen to what's good today.

Just keep an open mind and listen to as much as possible. Whether it's good, classic, ok or garbage. That way you know exactly what you like and what you don't like. Don't be afraid to dig through the old 80's and 90's albums. Or too take the time out to discover new underground MC's you may not be exposed too. Once you find something you love it'll be easy, you'll have hip-hop in your DNA and you'll be a true hip-hop head breaking and tagging in no time even in '14.

This is too broad a question, so I'll narrow it down to the five Hip-Hop albums I would give to someone who knows nothing about Hip-Hop. (This is not necessarily my personal top 5 favorite albums. Rather, my top 5 most representative albums.) In no particular order... 1. Illmatic - Nas 2. Death Certificate - Ice Cube 3. Endtroducing..... - DJ Shadow 4. Funcrusher Plus - Company Flow 5. Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) - Wu-Tang Clan Here, you get a taste of East, West, Instrumental, and Experimental Hip-Hop. From here, they could determine what they like most.

I agree with Myke. I personally think this is a stupid question due to the fact that we all have our own perceptions and outlooks. There's some albums that I might recommend solely because they might suit my personal preferences but that doesn't necessarily mean you will like it, too. And there's also a multitude amount of albums that I would not suggest at all but it's only because they're not for me. So, it really comes down to the person and what style of music they gravitate towards.

Illmatic by Nas Ready to die by Biggie smalls Straight outta Compton by Nwa Anything Outcast has made Run DMC by Run DMC Wu tang clans first album (can't remember the name, 36 chambers i think) Moment of truth by Gangstar These should give you a good base to expand from. If you like Nas it could put you on to AZ. Like biggie, it could put you on to jay. Like NWA, it will but you on to ice cube, Dr.dre, mc ren, and easy e. Like run DMC, you might like eric b and rakim or the Beastie boys. Wu tang could put you onto like the 20 members of wu tang (too many to name). So yeah start with those. Avoid most southern rappers only because, if your just starting out, you should hear a combination of good beats and lyrics. Most southern rappers only offer the beats. But if you go that route, Trap Muzik by T.I, and king remembered in time are great sourhern albums along with anything outcast. Avoid ANYTHING trap. Trust me, it will set you back a couple years. Good luck

Five to recommend on my end: EL-P's Fantastic Damage, Mick Jenkins' The Water[s], Ka's The Night's Gambit, Shabazz Palaces' Black Up, Death Grips' The Money Store. Keepin' my number low 'cause I don't want to go typin' a big wall of text.

T.i. trap muzik: Ironically this is the album I tell people to listen to when they say all he raps about is trap music lol. Hits, Storytelling, Concept record with "T.I. VS. TIP", deep records and his most revealing song ever "I still luv u". Jay-Z Blueprint: Everyone nowadays is concerned with making a class debut. But the real task is making a classic after 5 years in when you feel like you have nothing left to talk about. Blueprint captures that. Everyone doesn't get to the level of success to make songs like "Heart of the city" "Renegade" and "U don't know" Eminem Eminem show: For everyone who says Eminem is too goofy. This was his transition from all the jokes and Boy band dissing to just being completely serious (Besides 2 tracks). He went back to all the silly shit on Encore. Which makes this one even more special. Just 3 of the ones I thought of

See I got into hip hop in a weird way. I was introduced to the underground scene first and then eventually started getting into classics and more commercial albums, so now I like pretty much everything. I wouldn't necessarily recommend going down the more experimental route at first because not everyone's inclined to like that so I'd start with more accessible but must-listen to stuff, like: A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury UGK - Ridin' Dirty Outkast- Aquemini Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid Maad City

lol those albums are far from classics. D12 world had a few good songs like American Psycho 2, git up, good die young, how come and 40 ounces. But overall the album is mediocre and I wouldn't introduce someone to hip hop through D12's world. Devils night was a good album though. But MMLP2??? Garbage!!!!!!!!!!!

Just gonna name 3 albums which formed a large part of rap that I listen to. 1) Raekwon with Ghostface Killah - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx (No words to describe it, especially the first time I heard it. From the album cover to the music SCREAMS hip-hop. Amazing album) 2) 2Pac - Me Against The World (Anybody who says 2Pac wasn't lyrical, slap them in the face with this album disc lol. 2Pac at his best and made me understand why he's considered the best by people) 3) Dizzee Rascal - Boy In The Corner (Random one, but this is mainly for people who wants an understanding of how good UK rap can be. The Archetype UK rap album, ahead of its time. The type of beats that Kanye/Jay-Z are jumping on nowadays, Dizzee has BEEN making back in his best days. Classic)
