My favorite for flat joins❤❤❤ I was taught to catch both loops if you don't want that little ridge. My grandmother taught my almost 50 years ago and she was in her 80s. Lol.

This is such a great tutorial, well explained and video taped. I’ve seen and saved several and this is best for me. I’ve been crocheting for almost fifty years. Taught myself from a book. I really like the mattress stitch to join squares. But it left a lot of ends to weave in. To reduce number of ends, I stitched four squares around one square. Then adding new squares as needed worked around another square etc. It made a big difference in the time required to weave in ends. Also made the corner junctions neater.

I love the mattress stitch! But I never thought about using it for granny squares! Main reason I don't make granny squares is because I can never figure out how to attach them. My fingers are getting stiff since I can't make big projects anymore but now I can make anything doing this!
