My favorite for flat joins❤❤❤ I was taught to catch both loops if you don't want that little ridge. My grandmother taught my almost 50 years ago and she was in her 80s. Lol.

I really like the mattress stitch to join squares. But it left a lot of ends to weave in. To reduce number of ends, I stitched four squares around one square. Then adding new squares as needed worked around another square etc. It made a big difference in the time required to weave in ends. Also made the corner junctions neater.

I love the mattress stitch! But I never thought about using it for granny squares! Main reason I don't make granny squares is because I can never figure out how to attach them. My fingers are getting stiff since I can't make big projects anymore but now I can make anything doing this!
