Will just start ticking again, issues is oil pressure related, that first cam journal is a lot of pressurized oil pushing around it and some into the cam. That journal (no bearing there, cam just rides on the heads) wears, you end up with low oil pressure to the phasers and a dieseling sound if pressure there is low enough. My 04 f150 with the 5.4L 3v has the same issue. One of those things you just deal with. Normally doesnt cause any major performance issues just a mustang that sounds like it had a diesel swapped into it lol

@Lillie1986 Without the tool the timing chain tensioner will extend then you cannot get the chain back on.

Yeah, you can make a tool or a rubber hose section will work just as well. The key to the whole operation is to have those marks on the alignment points of the cam, caps, phaser, and chain. If you have a second set of hands readily available, this is MUCH smoother of an operation. I've helped change cams in on of these cars and it's pretty straight-forward. Also, the phaser bolt is another one of those 1-time-use bolts, that wasn't mentioned. Bad design? Nah, they're not all that bad.

Did you replace the vct solenoids at the same time? A lot of ford trucks get a tick that is linked to the vct solenoid and not the phasers. What exactly can fail on the cam phaser, it looks like a simple part.

Is there any way to upgrade the cam phasers to something better than the factory? So this kind of thing won't need to be done again basically. I'm asking for my brother who has a modded '08 Mustang GT. Thanks

If they go bad I on mine I am going to make sure they swap in a set of hotrod cams... Since they are already in there might save a couple of bucks there.

Don't do it at home? Wish I had a cozy shop! Just got $996 in +A Ford Performance swag, it's 41 degrees and I'll do most of it in the driveway! The $100's I'll save is going towards a rebuilt TR3650!! Thankful for my wrench chops.

Only bad things are the special tools they want you to buy (cams will require the 3-valve specific compression tool), but info is everywhere. Just do your research and have a good mechanic handy or your highly mechanically-inclined friend who's done them on standby, heh. Take photos/video and you can see how it all goes back together if you get lost. It's really not that bad, but you do run the risk if you break something.

Yeah and OHV pushrod engines never had issues with rocker arms, pushrods or lifters. LOL The cam phaser would not have to be there if the engine did not have VVT. There are loads of SOHC and DOHC engines without VVT so no cam phasers. Anyone who knew anything about engines would know that.
@zclarke198912 жыл бұрын
its not a bad design by ford its due to using cheap oil filters i work for ford and using aftermarket oil filters is the number 1 cause to the cam phasers going bad. the aftermarket filter comes apart and cloggs the oil passages to the phasers.

don't try this at home? Actually pretty simple just time consuming. Though I have a fairly fresh engine(2011gt) I would've pulled timing cover and replaced chains/tension'ers BUT good short-cut/get-er-dun-garage video.
