How did you figure out that it was the wheel bearing? Was there play?

You can by grabbing the top and bottom of the wheel and shaking it. Any sort of play is a bad bearing. When hearing the noise while driving, move the steering wheel from side to side and as the weight of the car unloads the bearing you should hear the pitch of the noise change.
