Dream car is a Lotus Exige S260, or the new Lotus Emira with the Supercharged Camry V6. I'd be happy to get my old Lotus Elise back though. No need to put my entry in, because I already bought a headlamp. They're actually way more awesome than expected.

With snap ring pliers, use the biggest ones that will fit in the snap ring holes. As you found out, there is a lot of pressure on snap rings, amd the bigger or thicker they are, the more pressure to open/close them (depends whether the snap ring is internal or external. Yours were external), therefore a stronger tool is required (bigger pins in this case).

Don't stress about the mistakes. It happens to us all. A short word of advise: If you plan on being a mechanic for a living you should invest in good tools. Also, ring plyer pins should fit snuggly in the holes. If it's real loose you've got the wrong size. My favorite ride would be a '63 Corvette Stingray.

Oh man, this feels like every time I work on my car. 9 different things have to go wrong somehow. Glad to see you keep pushing through and keeping a positive attitude. And hey, if those steelies are just for mock-up anyway, could you just hit the center bores with a die grinder to open them up?

That wasn’t a torsion bar that you removed. It was a strut brace. Torsion bars are another approach to springs. A strut brace keeps the suspension from flexing or perhaps getting knocked off on a big pothole. Minimally hard bumps are more likely to knock it out of alignment.

Why want the tire fit? Bolt pattern different? I have 2 , 1967 mustang coupes. I know some of the newer stuff will not fit the older cars. I am very lucky, I have a few cars,in my garage. 1969 Camaro,1955 Chevy Bel Air,1940 Pontiac coupe, plus my dad 1970 Ford f100. Blessed to have all because of the knowledge to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

Besides, they were just temporary wheels - if you'd spent hundreds or thousands on wheels that didn't fit because of that or because the brake disk and calipers were too large, then that's a mistake lol. We all make mistakes, and I expect you will too (real ones, not what you did which is nothing). It's only the internet trolls that make something of it, and they're really not worth listening to. I think those snap rings you were dealing with are too stiff for light pliers like the icon ones you used, those are more meant for low-stress retaining rings. When I did wheel bearings on my BMW I ended up buying the 12in snap ring pliers from harbor freight and they made it extremely easy to remove and install the giant retaining rings for the bearings. It might seem like overkill, but I bet they would work perfectly for your snap rings.
