I'm having a lot of trouble putting the caliper back on. It seems as thought the piston is back as far as it will go, since no matter how much I spin it, it doesn't seem to be making any more progress and It's back as far as yours seemed to be. However, when I put on an old brake pad on the front, since it is much thinner, I am able to fit the caliper onto the rotor. I have been working on this for hours. Any help??
@TheRykerDane10 жыл бұрын
4thatdude1 the rear brakes are tricky because you have to spin them. But as long as you get the piston back in far enough to put the pads in they should go on, unless somehow you have the wrong brake pads. Make sure the piston is almost flush when it is spun in. I hope you get it.

The clips I think you are talking about are the ones that are there to make noise when your brake pads are low. Sometimes people install them and sometimes people don't.

Ahhhh.......makes sense. Thanks for that little nugget. When you mentioned something about some instruction manuals suggesting using *needle nose pliers*, I thought to myself: WTF?!? Then I realized they were probably needed so that you could jam them into your skull and end it all after you realize that these rear brake cylinders don't just retract straight back with even pressure.............but that they screw back into position .......now that DOES make me wonder how they *unscrew* themselves to make contact with the brake pads when pressure is applied to the brake pedal. I will investigate this phenomenon further........as I have no life and am waiting delivery on my 2002 premium convertible to arrive from NJ.

Good video. It looks like you forgot to install the little butterfly plate thing that clips into the caliper casing. You point to it and even pick it up at 3:55, but you don’t install it. It is needed to allow the little wires coming off the pads to slide against smooth metal instead of the rough caliper casting.

Yeah.. The breaks were done on mine before I recieved, about 14months ago. There's been a squeal? when I breaked, so I greased everything up. I decided to hit the break to compress the piston, th@ was not the best idea. I could not reset the piston for the longest time - bled the TOP Valve, & WA-LA! My last car (GP) only had 1 bleeder! 😅😩 Now I'm rollin' great!

GOOD video. Got a question for you. Is there an easier way to get the E-brake spring back on the caliper? It popped off, and now I'm having trouble getting it back on. I did this same job a couple of years back, with the same problem. I eventually got the spring back into place ( an hour or so) after dikkin with it. Do they have a specific tool for this? Arthritis is preventing me from using my first method.

Tried this today and was almost done when I realized I didn't have the clips for the brake pads, they weren't in the box and the old ones didn't have them on them either! So back to Advanced I went. Is renting that *special* caliper compression tool really necessary? Tell me why a 'C'-clamp would not get the job done? It might be a little more problematic to keep the C-clamp from spinning off the end (a thin piece of wood would help), but it would help keep the cost down of having to find and rent a specialty tool.
@TheRykerDane10 жыл бұрын
Yes it is needed. The piston actually spins like a screw back into the caliper. It does not just press straight back in. So you need the tool with the little pegs so twist (spin) the piston back in. And the rental fee is free, you just have to put down a $50 deposit at most places, and you get it back when you return the tool. Hope that helps.
