Funny, I just went through almost the same thing. I'm running a blown 302 in a 1926 Ford model T show car. The MSD box left me stranded for the second time. I pulled out all the MSD system and installed the Pertronix. Yes, better throttle response and the blower likes it......Good video...Thanks

I really appreciate your “warts & all” presentation. Stripped threads here but all of those small unexpected hiccups that at frustrate and delay a basically fun project. Keep on keep-in on.

I had the misfortune of my points fizzing out on me one morning- 1/2 block from work. Fortunately was able to glide into a bus stop. I had no idea what had gone wrong - hadn't worked on the car for a couple of weeks + there was plenty of expensive 92 octane gas in the tank. Mechanic said tow it. Yeah, he replaced the points and I got a Pertronix system the next weekend- absolute gold! My supervisor was pretty miffed that I was late, kind of didn't believe me. I told her to go to the window and look for herself. Didn't hear any more about that. [Confession: this saga occurred in a 1967BZ 250S. I did have a 65 Corvair 110 Monza that, in retrospect, I never had any points system problems with in 18 years. Lucky.]

...there is a vacuum tube connecting the intake ports below the carbs...that is used for the PCV valve...maybe check for leaks at the short rubber hoses, or the tube mounting bracket...I had same problem on one of my rebuilds...it was a manifold pressure differential... just enough to aggravate cfpm through air horns...multi-carb aps are critical functioning in this regard... also the connecting actuator and throttle shafts can wear...you can put nylon/brass bushings in these areas... Check w/Clark's if they still supply these kits... Larry D. SHAW FPK, Ga

Hey Sean glad to see you’re back! Your misfire sounds like it might be worn valve guides. I had a 350 Chevy that had the same issue. No matter what I did to the ignition system I still had a misfire. Once I pulled the heads I found the cylinders that had the most deposits on the plugs had the most worn guides. Might be something to think about.
@AutoAnatomy2 жыл бұрын
Thought about that...I have a rebuilt head I can try.
@jacquespoirier9071 Жыл бұрын
before installing that head, it is a good idea to disassemble the valves and measure the valve stem to guide clearance many rebuiders uses expandable pilots to compensate for the guide wear, to some extents, it is OK but this can lead to ramdomly missed power strokes@@AutoAnatomy

The consensus in Corvair Forum is to leave the ballast wire in place, and that feeding full 12V causes failures. At least when installing a Pertronix module in a STOCK distributor.
@AutoAnatomy Жыл бұрын
I’ve also heard that Pertronix units need 12v to function, but this one is a new distributor that required 12v.

I really enjoy fixing up older cars and driving them. In the last 30 years I've been stuck on the road exactly twice. Both times were because of Pertronix ignition failures. Hopefully they have fixed them?

I'm new to this, but can you swap the DS carb with the PS carb and see if the problem follows?

That's on the to-do list, and yes the carbs are interchangeable side-to-side.

Having just binge-watched this playlist, didn't you have to replace one of the carbs because of a broken mixture needle? Is it possible that the two carbs might be different?
@AutoAnatomy Жыл бұрын
That was a thought as well, but if you keep watching the videos you'll see what ultimately was the problem. Sadly it was a bit more than a mismatched carb. Thanks for watching!

Check your cylinders with a bore scope for carbon buildup GJG

The engine was just apart and the cylinders were honed with new rings. I just replaced the cylinder heads and all the bores looked great.

Years ago I put a Pertronix Module in the stock distributor on a 72 Dodge that worked well for years. Is this still possible or do you have to replace the distributor now?
@AutoAnatomy2 жыл бұрын
You can still buy just the module, but my original distributor had a lot of slop so I opted to replace the entire unit

Sean, I’ve a Pertronix distributor, coil, and new wires ready to install in my 1966 Thunderbird 390. Any reason on the Corvair you went with NGK plugs? Does Pertronix recommend a plug different than the stock plug? Good luck tracking down that misfire.
@AutoAnatomy2 жыл бұрын
NGK plugs were what I could get at my local OReilly. No other reason!

...as far as any other misfire concerns...like engine can be pulled leaving transaxle in vehicle...in case you decide to keep it w/original numbers... The LEAST you can do is remove rocker arms, layout in order the pushrods only, and attach an extension on a dial micrometer and record the offending worn down lobe...then you could know on that disclosure decision to sell ... Best to diagnose problem before any teardown... Larry D. SHAW Retired GM/Chevy Dealer Atlanta, GA

Vacuum leak on the driver side? More air, run leaner, need more fuel at idle.

Maybe so, I've not found it yet but could be sucking past valve guides.

Pertronix is all made in CHINA. I would stick with the points.
@AutoAnatomy2 жыл бұрын
Not all of Pertronix is made in China, and while points are easy they aren't the most reliable anymore. It seems the replacement points are not as good quality as they once were and the last set of points I purchased were basically junk right out of the box.

@@AutoAnatomy you are correct. There are some still made here or you can find NOS.
