In Europe, wornout Kubotas are worth a fortune in odd spare parts. The small 14A alternator is around 100$ used and manifolds, fuel pump, govenor, radiator etc. also worth a lot. The reason being that a lot of contracting equipment uses these engines, so spareparts are usually nedded in a hurry, so even used they are sold at a premium. I'm guessing this engine, as a usedbut working spare, could be sold for 1000$ over here.

Unbelievable that some body would dump that motor. Happy to see it saved.

The thing with the handle near the fuel pump is probably the manual priming pump, you unscrew it and work it like a bicycle air pump.
@fortj3
@fortj3 5 жыл бұрын
Yep. Diesels require a priming pump to eliminate the air between the tank and the injection pump. Sucks when your pump cavitates and your diesel engine blows light blue smoke due to running lean.

To bleed, pump the hand pump, the bleed screw open, close when clear fuel come. Then crack (1/2 turn) open the injector tube at the injectors and crank until fuel comes out with no bubbles and close. ( only a few cc per stroke will come out) Be sure trottle is NOT at STOP. Yanmar or Kubota engine with original paint on filter.

That little engine looks almost new! It should be a criminal offence to throw that down like they did. I have seen these in light plants, such as the construction site light plants used for night road work.They have a single phase generator in the 5 or 10 kW range.Probably the stator winding went out or the controls went bad on it and someone was too incompetent to fix it.The throttle lever would have gone to either a plate with a nut, for a manual, pre-set speed; or it could have gone to an electronic governor device, which would make small movements to it to maintain 60 cycle (3600 RPM) operation. The shutoff would have been an on/off solenoid which would have allowed the operator's switches (or the low oil pressure / high jacket water temp switches) to stop the engine when needed. These are highly in demand. The generator sets when complete fetch great money and are an often stolen piece of equipment from rental fleets. You're lucky to have that.The oilfilter painted with Kubota green really makes me think this was a new unit which was replaced under warranty. That engine probably has very, very few hours on it.

The tap below the lift pump is the coolant drain tap. You figured out the bleed screw is the 10mm nut on the injector pump. Always use the glow from cold, a lot easier on the starter motor. Changed many a burnt out starter on a Kubota due to constant cranking when cold or out of fuel. Depending on the spec of the engine the starter will also take out the stop solenoid, hi rev solenoid and coil commander if fitted when it fails due to cranking too long, especially on a nearly discharged battery. Swap the lift pump for one with a priming lever, can save a lot of grief lol.

I fed all my used oil from cars, motorcycles, lawn mowers, etc., to my big trucks. When you carry 240 gallons of diesel, dumping in a gallon of used oil makes no difference other than to darken the fuel. Anything in that oil would be caught by the truck's fuel filters, which were changed about every 30,000 miles. Never ever had a problem.

Over the years of working on diesel engines, I made a tool that really works. Consisting of a clear vinyl tube with a check valve at one end which also served as a veight on the end. This saved me so much frustration dealing with smelly oily diesel fuel. And I never had to deal with a no prime issue too. Plus this tool was a great gas siphoning jaget to boot. The engine sound great. Bet you the mechanic who took out the engine and scraped it was a poor shoemaker who was practicing to be a mechanic for sure. And I am sorry if I offended the shoemaker trade to boot. Would bet you that this would be perfect for a small tractor. Nice work with accurate information about engine sensor functions too.

HOLY SHIT I KNEW THAT ENGINE SOUNDED FAMILIAR We have a old kubota tractor, and it sounds very similar to this. It may not be the exact same model of engine, but its pretty close

It's genuinely satisfying watching this, makes me want to go and hunt out engines to repair except I've already got far too many hobbies, projects and 'stuff' to do and I *really* don't need a garage full of engines.

French fries do not cause the oil to have its characteristic smell. That so called "french fry smell" comes from the oil itself.

Love those little Kubota diesel engines. Sad to see that in a scrap yard. (When you finally got it running smoothly, I thought...that's an engine in good nick.) That valve under the fuel pump is a drain down cock for the engine coolant. Bleeding the fuel through is done with the outer bolt where the fuel enters the injector pump. Then loosen the injector inlets.....close when fuel appears... I like your perseverance!

If you were in Europe I'd suggest hotrod Aixam :-) Aixam is a French brand known for its microcars that are classified as mopeds (50cc, 45 kmph). Back in the old days those moped cars would've had two-strokes but current ones have tiny single-cylinder diesel engines. Until around 2000 these didn't require any licence in some European countries so they were popular with people who'd lost their licence on DUI charges. Easy to imagine they weren't all that popular among the other road users for that very reason :-) Another group of people drove those because they were scared of failing an actual driving test, not much better drivers than the drunk ones. Presumably some actually drove them because they're much cheaper in upkeep than cars (less fuel, barely any taxes and insurance) but at least in Austria they still got a fairly bad rep.

If indeed that was out of a Kabota tractor, he was missing the electric fuel pump that makes the thing self priming. But Mustie finally figured it out, primed it manually and got it going.

Love it! I tell ya these little diesels run for hours and hours on a gallon of diesel. Can't believe someone would throw it away. I'd put a 48V generator on it to charge a 48V backup battery pack.

Would make a great golf cart engine. Or make your own generator. Great little small bass boat engine too. Sailboat engine? Maybe put it in an old jet ski? The possibilities are endless. Great running little engine. Would also be great on a service truck for a large air compressor engine. Divers could also hook it up to an air compressor for deep sea diving. Log splitter, all kinds of things.

Great find! You really don't want to run those little Kubota's without coolant in the head for more than a few seconds. They have a spherical combustion chamber above the valves. Due to the compact engine size, the material is very thin there and needs water directly behind it to handle the heat, otherwise they will crack quick. I have the 3 cyl version (20hp) version of that engine in my Kubota tractor and you can see on my channel where I rebuilt this engine and it had had that issue. I ended up replacing the head with a Chinese clone. You should link Chucks KZbin channel as thanks!
