***PLEASE NOTE** lots of the sections below make use of various other features on the module. Some contain feedback patching using random voltages to influence rhythms or clock jitter etc. But the timings will guide you through what’s in focus for each patch at any given time. Skip around to your hearts content, or grab good drink get your feet up and set an hour aside to watch the full thing. This will also serve as a semi-tutorial for random functions you’ll find in other modules so it’s well worth watching (if I do say so myself) to get the most out of other random sources too. Cheers! :)

Thanks for the epic tutorial! Looks like a really well-considered module combining several established random techniques plus some unique functionality. I’m not sure I could justify getting it in addition to my existing random modules, but I’d definitely be interested in that “scale carving” approach to quantisation if it were a stand-alone module.

Fantastical video Ben! I used to stay away from Mutable modules because they are very abstract in their design and function, but once I finally got one, well that was it. Now I have a good amount with more on the horizon and I really enjoy adding them into my workflow and just for fun. They add a bit of playfulness into what can sometimes be a sterile scientific endeavor.

WOW! I really like this thing! But, I don't think its something I need to be looking at myself for now, a Turning Machine is probably a better start for a smaller 6U system which is what I'm planning. I just really like random. Also, I really appreciate that you use the DATA very often in these videos. I'm not sure why, but seeing waveforms makes everything suddenly make sense to me. So much so, that it is one of the first modules I plan on buying.
@DivKid
@DivKid 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah DATA is actually a very accurate clock source and modulator and dual oscillator / dual VCA too with wave shaping! Very cool.

Seems like the evolution of the Turing Machine has reached another level! The cleverness of this module is just so captivating. I like my TM and it's ex-panders, but yikes this unit is seriously random! The trio of new Mutables are incredible as are DivKidVideo's tours of them. Excellent, and the time menu will be a useful resource for future reference. When do you think Mordax will embed a Mutable users guide under one of the DATA menus? -)

@DivKid
@DivKid 6 жыл бұрын
No spread knob is kind of taken over by the incoming CV. Appreciate the thanks for a long video. Somethings just have a tonne of examples and need showing over a long period of time. Feedback is always important and knowing the longer videos with indexes/timing links work is good to hear.

I have one of these as my main source of modulation for a Morphagene. But I I find the random stepped voltages it sends out to be too chaotic, and I’m looking for something to smoothly (and randomly) modulate and change/shift parameters in the Morph (I guess more like the Y generator). Any suggestions on another module that could do this (and maybe smaller hp than Marbles too)?

How would Marbles pair up with Endorphin BLCK Noir ? Could you just use these 2 Modules without any thing else, or would you need more trigger sources ?
@DivKid

well there's only 3 trigger outs so you'd only be controlling 3 of the BLCK_NOIR sound sources. So you'd probably want more than that.

I use Eurorack as a Guitar Efffect. In the VOLCA MODULAR (again used as a guitar effect), I would use the S&H function to sample my Guitar using the Oscillator as an audio rate trigger, to sample it. I wonder....Marbles seems very promissing.
@DivKid
@DivKid 5 ай бұрын
audio rate sample and hold is fantastic, one of my favourite things. You get all those great aliasing style tones and it gives you a sample rate (like how CDs run at 44.1kHz, people record higher now etc) and you can screw with it with the oscillator. Fun when the oscillator is playing a pitch sequencing so you imparted overtones follow a pattern.

Excuse me for the clueless newbie question but, do T, Y and X function as Inputs as well as outputs? I'm unclear as to what's producing the drum sounds and how the Output is making it to the mixer. Thanks.
@DivKid
@DivKid 9 ай бұрын
No worries, nothing is "clueless" or rather we're all clueless until we know so it's good to ask questions :) The T, Y and X are all outputs. Mutable Insturments often dictate outputs with the grey border/block area around those connections. They can't also be inputs as the signal flows one way. Marbles doesn't make any drum sounds by itself, those outputs go out to modulate or trigger other modules that are then mixed and recorded separately. I hope that helps and feel free to ask any questions anytime.

Hi Matty, that's the X3 output from Marbles (black cable). However that first goes into the Mordax DATA (behind the overlaid graphic, hence you can't see - apologies about that) before going back out to Plaits 1v/oct on the purple cable.

When externally clocked, why does Rate still effect tempo?
@DivKid
@DivKid 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sheila, the rate knob becomes a divider or multiplier for the tempo when externally clocked. So with a clock in and the knob in the mid 12 o'clock position it just works at that rate. Turning it to the left will divide the tempo, so if you clocked it with a 16th note, you could do 8th notes, quarter notes, full bar timing etc. Turning it to the right you'd get 32nd notes, 64ths etc. It means you can tailor the tempo to musical divisions which is really useful.

absolutely not! Modular is about modulation and this will give you plenty. You might not need all the gate outputs (but they could be very useful). You could use this as a pitch sequencer too.

Hi Paul, I've had a quick look for you and I don't have any files I can share from this one. Full screen and screen shot the video would be my method if I was trying to collate the info on screen. Or typing things out into your own text file to make notes. Speaking to the latter point, running my own notes files bringing together ideas, tips and info from others etc is often a nice way to then sit with some information and play around with a module.

Hi Wilfred, the knob for clock rate is a timing multiple or divider when you plug in an external clock. Try adjusting that and adjusting the timing divider button.

Hey! The patch at 00:49:37
@DivKid
@DivKid Жыл бұрын
So I'm using the clock in red mode (fastest). The T1 output is my square oscillator now that then goes into a filter. Clock rate is the pitch. You can hear the glitchy affect of "coin tossing" the output in the green mode in the video. I didn't use a VCA in this patch, so I'm not sure how you're patching and why the VCA would be clicking. Are you following my patch exactly to use Marbles like an oscillator then process it through a VCA? With an envelope to the VCA? It shouldn't click any more or less because it's Marbles compared to a normal oscillator. Can you walk me through your patch and I'll try and help.
@thomasfitzsimons92
@thomasfitzsimons92 Жыл бұрын
Ah ok! My patch is t1 out with the clock in red mode -> stages as an envelope generator -> intelljel uvca - I’ve looked at the recorded waveform and i think it’s a zero crossing issue - is it worth getting a digital vca for this kind of thing? Could always use another one in any case
@DivKid
@DivKid Жыл бұрын
So sound from clock out to the VCA but Stages is the envelope generator for the VCA? Just checking you haven't taken the Marbles output into Stages, as that's not needed. Go Marbles clock out, to uVCA input. Separate gate sequence to gate Stages envelopes and Stages into the uVCA. Digital VCAs can have zero detection, there's the WMD and the newer Persephone from Expert Sleepers is great for that with built in distortion that's also nice. You can use tools like the DPW Zero 2 (I have a demo on my channel) to build zero detection behaviour into your own patches and modules too. But raising attack time a time bit should help get rid of clicks. I don't find them to be an issue in my patching generally.

@DivKid
@DivKid 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't tune my oscillator so take the notes as a series of intervals not finite values. I don't tune my oscillators to anything other what I feel like at the time unless I'm working with other instruments or a patch that needs to be recorded and recalled.

Yeah but with Spread at full CW, it sounds as a two Cs (two octaves distant), so i would assume it should sound the middle C with Spread at fully CCW.
@DivKid
@DivKid 6 жыл бұрын
spread fully up is just the highest and lowest possible values. Spread all the way down is no spread from the centre point, that's set by the bias. So the bias would be the thing changing that value.
