A playthrough of Electronic Arts' 1994 monster-themed hockey game for the Sega Genesis, Mutant League Hockey.
This video shows me going through the playoffs as the Pucksucker Pukes with the death index set to "annihilation."
I've never been a big fan of video games based on hockey, I have to admit. Besides Nintendo's Ice Hockey and Konami's Blades of Steel, very few of them have ever caught my interest enough to warrant any commitment to them.
Then came Mutant League Hockey.
Have you ever wanted to beat a member of the opposing team to death with your stick? Have you ever wanted to plant a bomb in a puck and shoot it right at someone's face? Maybe you even dreamt of forcing them below the ice where you can watch them flail before they inevitably bow out from hypothermia and drowning?
If so, you're in luck! Electronic Arts made this all possible with their fantastic 1994 riff on Canada's holiest of national pastimes. As a follow-up to their earlier Mutant League Football, MLH puts you in control of skeletons, goblins, and zombies with access to some hilariously over-the-top weaponry. In MLH, the winning team isn't necessarily the most skilled one - it's hard to pull a victory if you're entire team is a red stain on the ice, after all.
Like many of EA's early/mid-90s Genesis games, this one has "labor of love" stamped all over it. From the excellent animation, character designs, and sound, to the well-written tongue-in-cheek dialogue and the game's general refusal to take itself seriously, this is the kind of game we knew and loved EA for back in the day. They weren't afraid to take chances and they came up with some brilliant stuff - Mutant League Hockey sits right up there with games like Haunting Starring Polterguy and General Chaos for its charm, creativity, and ludicrous displays of violence.
The game runs on the same engine that the Genesis version of NHL '94 did, so it's silky smooth, fast, and responsive - certainly not a gimmicky throwaway game like you might expect at first glance.
Whether you're going at it alone or with a friend, electronic hockey doesn't get much more fun than this.
