Muttnchop Piper, we miss you man. I'm 27 and I've been smoking a pipe for almost three years and I STILL learn quite a bit from your calming videos. I hope that all is well with your mother and that she is successfully recovering from whatever ailment she may have had. I think that I can say with confidence that we all wish you and your family the best.

On a mission to watch all of your videos, I used to smoke a pipe with my dad back in the UK but I was never really sure how to do it properly, a married man now, living in Japan I decided not long ago to pick it back up and truly learn how to do it. I must say, you are now my favourite youtuber, and I love watching all of your videos, they're relaxing and educational and you've really helped me through a stressful time in my life. So thank you very much

I hate to comment so late, but I totally agree with your description of the flavor blast. That’s part of why Crooner by C&D is one of my favorite blends. The tin note has a cinnamon sugar cookie dough note to me, the flavor smoking it is super smooth with a little vanilla from the deer tongue, and the retrohale has a minty note in my opinion. All three aspects make this blend a unique experience!

Really good video on retro haling. It took me over two years of trying to figure it out, but it has made all the difference. My usual problems would leave me with smoke closed in the mouth and forceful exhalation from the nose eventually just made me open my mouth or accidental inhaling with the usual cough. The trick that worked in the end was an old band trick of imagining you're trying to swallow an orange. It makes you use the palate area muscles opening the passage to the nasal cavity and creates a more open, bright, clear sound...or allow smoke to pass into your nose for the retro hale. I had this lightbulb moment about a month ago and now I have recovered the muscle memory from my high school band days.

Thank you for this explanation of retrohaling. I have been smoking a pipe for several years now and never new how to do this. I learned how the other day thanks to this video. I tried it with Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe. It has since brought out so much more flavor in the blends I smoke! You are a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you!

Something that really helped me get the hang of it was when someone told me to "chew the smoke". Chew it vigorously; pretend it's stale bubblegum. (Best practiced alone as I felt like I looked very silly) That action forces tiny puffs of smoke through your nose, or it does for me. Once I knew what I was going for I found it much easier to then do it without the chewing motion. Thank you for your videos, they've all been a tremendous help.

Thank you Muttnchop Piper! You're videos are always informative! As a perique lover, one thing I find that helps with perique or any med-full body blend is to do a combination of retrohale and regular exhale (i.e., let the smoke drift out your mouth and nose). I find if I let smoke out both my mouth and nose, I get the most flavor. If the blend is on the spicier/full body side, I do a little less through my nose than mouth though. Conversely, if it's more aromatic or light body, I let more out through my nose and less mouth. I find this applies to cigars as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks to this video, I figured out how to retrohale a little over two months ago, and my smokes have been much more pleasurable ever since. I especially love the result I get from retrohaling in my newest pipe, a vintage meerschaum estate pipe with around the same bowl capacity as my MM MacArthur that I bought for only $19 off of eBay. I find that all of my tobaccos taste bolder and sweeter in this pipe anyway, so the addition of retrohaling improves on perfection.

Old comment, I know, but as an aromatic piper, retro-haling is like cracking open the ark of the covenant on flavor profiles. It just makes the whole dang smoke. I'll retro-hale about 1/8th of the time and boy does it bring out those flavors! Couple that with a couple fingers of a nice drink and holy hell I'm in heaven.

What really got me into this whole retrohale thing was the fact that it helps you absorb more nicotine from the smoke. I mean okay a full appreciation of the flavor of your tobacco is a good reason in its own right but think about nicotine (which we all enjoy, even if we don't know it) and how you can get so much of it without having to inhale. I'm a Medwakh smoker and that kind of tobacco is inhaled so I've had a hard time accepting the fact that pipe tobacco isn't supposed to be inhaled. That's where retrohaling helped me because I'm always told it's a good way to get the most nicotine out of your tobacco without inhaling it.
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
Thats a reasonable assumption, I know when i retrohale i get a quicker Nicotine buzz then if i didn't. :) :) :)

your discussion are so deliberate I wonder if you could have talk about health and pipe smoking..
@MuttnchopPiper8 жыл бұрын
First let me ask you, have you researched this subject, and if so, what are your conclusions? 👀
@bilaltariq508 жыл бұрын
+Muttnchop Piper My conclusions are: 1:: The risk of lungs diseases is greatly reduced if the pipe smoker does not inhale the smoke. It is why it is recommended not to inhale. This is generally a problem with old cigarette smokers who are in the habit of inhaling. 2:: There is a chance of mouth / lips diseases etc however that is very less (one in a million i may say). I must say all the research I have read puts pipes smoking and other tobacco related activities in same category which is very wrong. Smoking a pipe can never be like chewing a tobacco or smoking a pack of cigarette . 3:: The pipe smoking is not and should not be a activity that you should indulge into for the sack of fixing- nicotine addiction. It has to be enjoyed at the time of relaxation. It means that the number of bowls a person should have will be restricted. 4:: The second hand smoke (the smoke that is exhaled from mouth) do go into lungs and may cause some problem, i dont know how big and issue this is. 5:: The nicotine cause some problems for the cardiovascular system but once again I dont know how big an issue that is. 5:: The calming effects of pipe smoking has shown to be actually improving health (specially mental health) and soothe the nerves. 6:: Pipe smoking is a good weapon to have against modern day stress and tension. 7:: The habit of Pipe smoking should not be addicting ie a pipe smoker should be able to put his pipe down and go about any length of time with out any withdrawal symptoms etc. The need to smoke a pipe should not be more than the need to have a cup of tea / coffee. If it is more then the user may be over doing this hobby. 8:: As a general rules 2-3bowls a day should be very normal with mild to no side effects on your health (in my openion). 9:: The amount of tobacco used is much less as compared to smoking a cigarette or a cigar. More over there are no addictive chemicals in pipe tobacco. 10:: Tooth decay and some gums problems may be caused by regualr and prolonged use. Thanks for your reply

First of all, you’ve provided me with a lot of tools and taught me a very lot as a new pipe smoker, for that I thank you. Your description on our olfactory senses and spice such as chili peppers isn’t entirely accurate though. The active component in chili peppers is called Capsaicin, this component actually causes the burning or hot sensation in our mouths (or if you get it in your eyes such as pepper spray) it’s not generated from our olfactory sensory. It’s also used in muscle creams like icey hot for example. My point is the effects are real and not an imaginary thing as you imply from our sense of smell. I miss your teachings Sir, just had to correct your explanation on this one.

Hi Muttnchop Piper. I've just taken up the hobby and have been following and valuing your advice on the subject. I covered your "Just the Basics" series and didn't find your advice on how to break in a new pipe. I've seen many others but wanted to get your view. Have you done a video on this (I can't find it)? I bought two Peterson system pipes when in Dublin, a 'second' which is a fine pipe and a more expensive one from the Deluxe series. I'm leaving the good one alone until I've mastered the basics and am sure I'll carry on. The other one is no doubt being slightly abused through trial and error, ignorance and experimentation. Hopefully it'll survive as its a nice pipe. Looking forward to hearing your advice on how to break in a new pipe. Then I'll pursue the Savinellis!
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
Peter Kane - Pete, there really is not correct way to break in a pipe. First off absolutely do not coat the inside of your pipe with anything, honey, motor oil, molasses, nothing. Second a lot of new pipe smokers find it difficult to smoke a whole bowl, so if you want, fill your pipe halfway for a while then move to a full bowl. Lastly, learn and use the breathe method of how to smoke a pipe, it will prevent a lot of issues new pipe smokers deal with, tongue bite, and the bowl getting to hot. 👍👍👍
@petessnaps7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the prompt reply, very much appreciated. The guy In Peterson's Dublin told me to fill the pipe with whiskey and let it stand overnight before emptying out, allowing to dry before filling for the first time? The other youtube advice on "breaking in" left me confused, so your opinion resonates. The only thing I found sensible was to maybe use a cooler-burning tobacco like burley as opposed to hot-burning virginia until you get a start on your cake. I've mastered the breath method but not retrohaling yet, my next discipline. Thank you again and keep recording, its very helpful and encouraging.
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
Peter Kane - With the breathe method you can regulate the amount of smoke you draw and the heat of your pipe, if it gets to hot push more smoke back through the stem, which will cool the pipe. All that other fancy smoking tips and lining your pipe with whiskey, or honey, can eventually harm your pipe. 👍👍👍
@petessnaps7 жыл бұрын
Brilliant, thank you. I'll take your advice and keep the whiskey for a different kind of sip. I'll pack using your 3-stage sprinkle method and GO SLOW. I'll stick my single smoker till I'm confident "I've got it" then start rotating other pipes. Great to be in touch!
@petessnaps7 жыл бұрын
Hi Muttnchop, things are gettin better! Took your advice I started smoking the Peterson Deluxe as it came out the shop. Currently smoking Cornell & Diehl's Autumn Evening and its great. Pipe packing, lighting, smoking really going well, breath method and retrohaling also going well I'm beginning to really enjoy my pipes. I have a trip to Manchester England next week and I've found a tobacconist - Ashton's, so plan to pick up some tobacco - Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe and other English blends ( any recommendations?). Next purchase will a Savinelli. Keep up the inspiration!

William stout - it’s a little tricky to get the hang of, close your mouth around the pipe, breath in through your nose, and before you breathe out through your nose, draw some smoke into your mouth, then exhale through your nose, it should grab the smoke on the way out, sorry I can’t be more specific, but it’s hard to explain in words how to do this. 👍👍👍

I have to ask, because this puzzling, and maybe someone can answer this: So I smoke both cigarettes and my pipe, and even though Pipe Tobacco is stronger, I don't find the latter to be as fulfilling, as in it doesn't calm the nicotine craving. Why is that?
@MuttnchopPiper Жыл бұрын
It's because the nicotine in pipe tobacco is at the level that is naturally occurring. The cigarette companies add more nicotine to the cigarette then is naturally produced by the tobacco.

@MuttnchopPiper8 жыл бұрын
I do not smoke meerschaum pipes, I have in the past but no longer, there is no reason why I don't smoke them, I just prefer Briar, radiator, and corn cob pipes. That's true, you are not supposed to build cake in a meerschaum pipe, the pipe is very porous, and the coloring comes from the tobacco burning process, once a cake forms the coloring process stops. 😎😎👍

I learned like this: 1) draw in smoke and keep your mouth closed 2) now swallow, and as you swallow press your entire tongue against the roof of your mouth covering as much as the top of your mouth to the back of your throat as possible 3) now exhale through your nose Hope this helps
@FlyingAce10168 жыл бұрын
How do you go about retrohaling without it going into your lungs? I have to draw that deep or pretty deep to be able to retrohale
@MuttnchopPiper8 жыл бұрын
FlyingAce1016 - for some it's a difficult skill to master, basically what I do is close off the back of my throat, like you would when you gargle, so try gargling with water and feel the sensation of closing your throat so no liquid is swallowed. Then while you are smoking breath in through your nose until your lungs are about half full of oxygen, then draw smoke into your mouth close your mouth and exhale through your nose, usually the action of exhaling will draw the smoke along out of your mouth and through your nose. That's the best way I can explain how to accomplish retrohaling. 😏😏😏

My girlfriend hates when I burp in her vicinity so I picked up the habit of burping with my mouth closed and exhaling it through the nose. To me this is the most similar mouth mechanic to retrohaling...guiding the smoke to the back of the throat and exhaling through the nostril

Retrohale is completely natural to me but the breath technique is nearly impossible. I spend so much energy concentrating on my breath it ruins my smoke

Andrew - Try this then, take one of your pipes but put no tobacco in it, make sure you have a good seal around the mouth piece then just practice, no practice is the wrong word, sit in your favorite chair watch some TV and breathe in through your nose, and out through your nose , naturally, like you would any other time. Try not to over think it. 👍👍👍

220 million nasal receptors in a dog yet it still sniffs the most disgusting things ( like faecal matter ) . Never understood this .

actually the hotness of pepper is not a taste. it is the numbing of the muscles. Thats why people who eat more spicy food have more immune to it and you can feel the heat when its coming out from the back XD

Actually the hotness of pepper is neither "numbing of the muscles" nor the smell of the pepper! It's capsaicin - substance which causes hot, burning sensation. It binds with the pain receptors in the mucosa, making it send signal to the brain. If you want to get more details I recommend wikipedia ;) Cheers!

I've gotten to the point where I can't not retrohale. Doesn't feel natural if I don't. So every puff = retrohale for me.

Bottom line sir inhaling or retrohaling smoke isn't healthy ...i cant understand why people find smoking enjoyable... its not...smoking kills bottom line!!!
