let it be known...we had a family trip planned to Olympic national park and Seattle over the long Easter weekend. A freak pnw snow hit the park, closed the roads and after watching this video on the 11th we quickly diverted to the San Juan Islands returning yesterday. BIG thanks to you guys for inspiring us to go over to Friday harbor for a night and for lunch at Roche Harbor, visited the cute church and sat at the bench overlooking the water. it was slow so harbor staff took the time to chat for 20 mins on the docks about the summer crowd invasion etc. He said slips open up for lease when someone dies. Yes that was his response. HA ! He said visiting the office every time your there and get to know the staff helps. Good luck. Surprised you didn't go to the Lavender farm. Highly recommend a stop there. This spot is beautiful. 20 min drive back to Friday harbor which was great too ,had a good dinner at the harbor before jumping on the evening ferry back to the mainland. We will definitely be back to visit this great area and maybe even do some boating !! Keep up the good videos.-Scott M

SJI’s are beautiful, but not fully beatable til late July and August. Friday Harbor is my fav, next to Princess Louisa Inlet. FH has summer jazz with some truly great musicians-important to me because I was a high school band director. FH is the place to be, watch their schedule and run to the dock F/P! WOW! How great life must be, often, on the MV Freedom. I am enjoying your posts immensely.

I highly recommend getting a slip at Cap Sante Marina operated by the Port of Anacortes. It has excellent service, convenient grocery shopping, no ferry ride to get to and from the mainland, and is much cheaper. We keep a year round slip there, plus a slip on Lake Union (which we only use in the winter but serves as a two bedroom condo when we travel from our home in the Tri-Cities to Seattle. Cap Sante is the perfect moorage for cruising the San Juan and Gulf Islands.

Just for the record: if anyone is unaware, alpaca wool is amazing. I've owned a hoodie from Appalachian Gear Co. for over a year now...they are an American textile company (shockingly few) that makes the fabric from 100% alpaca and then makes the garment. I wear it constantly...4 or 5 times a week. And I swear its never been washed and I don't know when it will. It never smells. Completely different from merino wool. Everyone should give this product a spin...if its any indication the company I mentioned is ALWAYS sold out. Just a rotation of garments that sell before the next drop. Cheers

Get to know the Harbor master, at our local harbor we were told you would die before we received a slip. We ended up talking to the harbor master who encouraged us to get on the wait list. 6 months later we had a slip. One other thing some harbors do is give existing slip holders 1st opportunity and larger slips as they become available. If this is so there you could get on the list for the smallest slip available, get one then either moor a smaller boat there for the minimum allowed time per year to hold onto the slip or see if you can sub-lease the slip to someone else who has a boat that will fit in the slip. Then get on the "upgrade" list for current lease holders.

In 1983 when my first child was born and his Soc. Sec. # arrived I put him on the Packers Waiting List for Season Tickets. This past winter he received his semi annual update from the Packers. He is down to the 63,000+ range. When he was younger his biggest reduction occurred when the Lambeau Field Stadium had an expansion. Child number 2 was born in 1986. He is in the 68,000+ range in line for season tickets. Perhaps their grandchildren might get lucky. Officially the waiting list was frozen at 100,000. So, if you can eventually get on the boat slip list do so and go on about your lives while the list reduces. You may change your minds and find somewhere better but, at least you would have options.

Can you buy a boat that is already at Roche Harbour, and keep the spot? I was on the waiting list for a Marina, and I befriended an employee there, who told me this secret. I did what he said, bought a boat there, got the spot as well. Later I sold the crappy boat I bought on Craigslist, and brought in my own boat. Then I realized: the employs of the Marina prefer this way: they make a small commission every time they find a buyer for a boat in a Marina…so they like it that way, I got in, the old owner sold his crappy boat, and everyone was happy.

Honestly, from the situation you described about your batteries, i would invest in solar/wind charging. If your agms are still good, you will get more bang for your buck with solar. You will run your genset much less with the sun consistantly pumping amps into your battery. Add a wind gen and you can charge at night as well, but they can be noisey.

@@johncanalese588 not sure what your point is. My vessel is in portland oregon. Also in the PNW. My solar produces all year round. Better in the summer, but it still produces. And, any production will reduce the amount of gen time. I was in their shoes. I put in 1200 aH of lithium in my 4550. I still ran my gen all the time. When i put on solar, i didnt run my gen as much. I am in the process of putting more solar on.

@@mandmmilling3716 You don’t say if you’re a live aboard or not, but it appears you have the boat and the finances to do what you want. I conclude MV Freedom does not have this luxury, with a N43 not having much space for significant Solar and the guys running a “tight ship” financially. So really they look at the most effective way to spend money eg. Use what you would spend on Solar for more LFP capacity.
@mandmmilling3716

@@johncanalese588 i live on a bayliner 4550 for 6-8 months a year. My boat just came out of the yard...bottom job and through hulls. Its moored in a marina in Portland Oregon. I spend the rest of the year traveling in my RV, which is currently were i am (Central Oregon). I am currently trying to decide on heading to AK, or mexico in October. I really hope to run into Freedom someday. I have been in their shoes. Lithium batteries are great. I put in 3 EG4 400 aH 12v server rack batteries almost 2 years ago at a cost of 1600 usd x3. I am retired so it hurt alot. I don't have large amounts of money coming in either. I also put in a xantrax 3000w inverter. After a year, i realized i was running my gen alot still. After alot of measuring and peny pinching, i put up an 800watt solar array. Wow, what a difference. I built a custom solar stand out of 1 inch conduit and makerpipe fittings to keep the costs down. I put up 4 200w Newpowa pannels (800 usd), a victron 100/75 charge controller (300 usd), various wire/connectiond (200 usd), and conduit/maker pipe fittings (100 usd). My old lead acids (3 200aH 8Ds) were still good and ran my boat fine. They would have lasted for years. Solar cost me 1400 usd vs 4800 usd for lithium and....the solar is doing what the lithium couldnt. Letting me burn less diesel. I am current planning another 800w. Right now, i have renogy 60amp dc to dc converters between my alternators and my battery bank. I would like to convert to balmar 250amp alternators so i can charge better while motoring. I dont like wind gens. I had one on my columbia C45 and it was loud. MV Freedom can do what they want. I was just pointing out i have been in their shoes and 1400 dollars of solar gave me a way bigger bang for my buck than 4800 dollars of lithium did. If i had to do it all again, and i would...i would do the solar first. I am happy with all of my upgrades, i just did them in the wrong order.

Add solar, 886 amp hour agm battery bank, charged nearly 100% with 800 watt solar set up everyday, even in low light conditions, add Dc to Dc charger to your engine alternators for additional charging capacity, run generator as last resort. Should be able to run your refrigeration system 24/7, and all your led lights off solar, heat and cooling would require generator. Solar has really come down in price and easy to install, finding places to mount the panels might be a challenge?
@johncanalese588
@johncanalese588 2 жыл бұрын
They live in the Pacific North West don't they? So Solar during Winter will be pretty much useless. As Shawn has said, the issue with Lead-Acid is they have a pathetic Charge Acceptance Rate which gets worse the closer you get to 100% SOC. So running a Diesel Genset or Main Engine with Alternators to charge them takes a long time and gets very inefficient as the load of the engine drops off when the charge rate drops off - that's why many boaters load up the 115VAC with washing machines, water makers clothes dryers etc. while the GenSet is running to make it a more efficient use of the diesel fuel. LFP (lithium), batteries have no such issue and will typically allow massive rate of charge right up until 100% SOC - only got to be mindful of temperature of batteries - way faster charging time. Cost is around $100/kW for LFP and with 8,000 charge cycles at a typical 50% DOD, it stacks up as a case for installation.

I’ve been watching Relion prices for a while now for a batterie back up for my house and they have been steadily going down. It would recommend 24v batteries too. Larger investment upfront and a little more hardware but worth it in the long run. Any larger loads on the batteries like fridge, AC, oven… the batteries and inverter wouldn’t have to “work” as hard.

Like me, Shawn is an Engineer, so I am sure he knows how to investigate and and build a better Electrical solution for his needs. As he is talking of retro-fitting, and NOT a new build then you've got to factor in the loads. If his boat is already built around 12V consumers than going to 24V may not be cost-effective at the end of the day.

Your agm's have a very high acceptance rate. If your genset is running that many hours per day, your charging output is too low. Victron has multiplus chargers that can parallel up to 5x120 amps. For a 1000 amp hour house bank, you could initially charge at 500 amps vs 250 amps. Lifeline AGM's are different than flooded in that you can charge at 1C. For my 1040 amp hour Lifeline house bank, I charge at over 400 amps leading to very short run times to charge from 50 to 85%. Having lighter weight and greater depth of discharge would be great but not worth the price for me.
