I'm wondering if this guy is an actor. If not, they did a great job picking the person to represent the company, so people won't automatically think that all math geeks are nerdy-looking with thick ass glasses and no social skills.

Not all actuaries are nerdy looking types. Consulting especially would attract the more alpha male types

This is the BEST video I have seen about becoming an actuary because you actually went into specific examples of what things should be interesting. I am 30 and considering a career change. This was originally what I wanted to study, but being young and immature I didn't put enough dedication into it. I received an Operations Mgmt degree instead. Seeing your video helped me remember what I found exciting about the career. Thank you.

My problem with him is he keeps saying if you don’t like this don’t be an actuary.With all due respect , this profession is so big that such things don’t matter I would like you to not say that if you would do something like this again. My second point is that your describing an actuary that works in consulting not the average actuary. Also I hate when people say if this does not not excite you so much don’t entry this field. This is work not a hoppy , I’m getting paid to do someThing. You also say that it has become so competitive that they won’t accept you if you don’t have at least 1-2 exams. While I understand the importance of the exams , but for entry level job most don’t ask anything. It’s not competitive by the way the demand is very high and its growing at 18% in the next 10 years but we don’t have enough actuaries to actually make it competitive unless you live somewhere where a lot of actuaries graduate and live yea maybe but other than that you are in demand everywhere you go. Trust me this profession is so important and in demand that if you are an aspiring fellow of the institute of actuaries that the UK is ready to give you a upcoming talent visa. So you also have countries that are fighting over actuaries and are ready to give residency/citizenship to them .

Every country needs insurance and that means every country needs actuaries. Sure there are more actuarial jobs in some countries but then the competition for jobs will be higher there too.

I did pursued my degree in actuarial science hearing that it is the best job in America, and it has a 0% unemployment rate. I graduated with a near 4.0 GPA, and passed 4 actuarial exams, only to find myself unemployed. I was lied to, there is only a 0% unemployment if you had 5 -10 years experience. This field is impossible to break into with no experience. I switched to another career and had much success, but I still regret wasting 4 years of my life on this useless degree.

+john m Do you feel that the actuary degree is a scarlet letter? I've heard that from law students who can't find a job because their law degree over qualifies them.
@FaithinCrist
@FaithinCrist 9 жыл бұрын
+CryptographicVisions I think an actuary degree is cursed letter. At least law student has a much easier time finding a job. There are so many law firm, if you can't find a job in a big firm there are many small firm you can work for. The actuarial field is very small, and if insurance companies don't hire you, you can't get a job.

john m I agree, you were really fooled into this profession by false promises. Maybe you should have done your homework before wasting away 4 years. As they say - Death and taxes are the only certain things in the world.
