Mom bought an 83 Quantum sedan in ‘86 to replace her troublesome Renault Alliance. The Quantum felt like a Mercedes by comparison…. A Diesel Mercedes! It was solid, comfortable but gutless, even with the 5 spd. Manual. Expensive to service as well. The brake pads for instance cost about the same as my stepdad’s 300D. Still it was a joy to drive and felt like a much more expensive car.

Funny thing is brake pads for a Mercedes W123 are cheap to buy today. Part stores and dealers must have been overcharging people for import car parts in 80s.

My parents had one of these when we lived in South Africa. It was sold as a Passat back then in South Africa but same car.

My parents used a realtor that had a '84 Quantum sedan. I rode in the back a few times while my dad was looking at prospective houses. I was bored stiff by looking at houses but as a kid, I kind of liked the car. It had a very taut ride yet sounded solid, and the seats were quite comfortable. Never got to drive one though, they were a rarity even when new and never knew anybody who had even a few years later. The car was based on the Audi 4000 and basically did everything that car did. It's a shame the Quantum didnt sell better in the USA but I believe it was pretty pricey and costly to repair and maintain. It sold better in Europe (as the Passat/Santana) and other parts of the world where the cost of maintenance was in-line with other cars this size.

I used to own an '82 sedan turbo diesel w/ E-gear automatic transmission: what a dog. When I worked at the VW dealership in Arlington, VA , I talked them into entering an '88 Quantum Synchro wagon into the Trans-Amazon rally, essentially a lap around South America. We built one to go into the race and kept another at the shop in case we needed parts for the racing one. Both cars were silver with the grey velour interior and were 5 cylinder with 5 speed manual transmissions.Good times.
