Had my RF in daily driver duties for just over 6 months and love it. I do have access to another car for snow and hauling more stuff, but those 90% of trips I'm commuting or running errands on my own, it works great. Really good gas mileage. Can haul a surprising amount, like I did a huge thanksgiving for 10 shopping trip. I even added a trailer hitch to add a bike rack. And it always puts a grin on my face.

I've now had my RF GT for 3 months, and remember watching your previous video while I was still waiting for mine to arrive. Mine is also my daily driver, although I only have a short commute to work. But I've got to say I love my RF, it's always a pleasure to drive, and so fun. Before I bought, I was a bit worried about road/wind noise, but that hasn't been a problem at all. With the roof closed, it's quieter than my previous car (Alfa 147). I don't cruise down the freeway doing 110+km/h with the roof open, but I've been on highway trips where the traffic is more like 100km/h and it's been fine, not too windy or loud for me. Anyway.. in summary, great car. Fun fun fun. David, or any other RF owners, check out the Mazda MX-5 RF Owner's Group on facebook. Friendly bunch with a common love of an awesome car.

@DavidBournePhotoandVideo7 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! I was looking at NC's, before the RF came along. I my own opinion, I think the NCII looks really nice, but the ND just nailed the looks. Plus, once the RF came out it was a done deal for me. People talk about the NC being larger and heavier, but I remember seeing a picture that put an overlay of the NC and ND together, and the difference was tiny. I don't really think you could go wrong either way :)
@acchaladka7 жыл бұрын
David Bourne That about is how I feel but I've only tested the ND RF so far. My organising question is, does the RF justify twice the money - I'd love to hear more after you've had a chance to drive the NC II a bit. Also, this would be my fun car but it would get driven about weekly in real Canadian winter.
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo7 жыл бұрын
Not sure if I'll get a chance to have seat time in one, but my 2 cents worth would be. 1)If you are happy to afford the RF, then go for gold, why not? Get the advancements in tech, it looks ridiculously good, and it's the newest model. 2) The NC II was adored before the ND came out. Just because the RF exists doesn't mean the NC II is any less desirable. 3)If it is going to be a winter car, and a weekly car, would you be more upset if something were to happen to it if it was a brand new car? That might hold the answer in itself.

I have a BRZ and am considering an ND. I do miss having an open top car, but was also looking at the Civic Type R, which is a practical 4-door hatch like your ST was. CTR is a big change from my car, whereas an MX-5 isn’t. Two different cars but I like them both for different reasons. Your video made the decision harder!
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo4 жыл бұрын
unsurety haha sorry man! Didn’t mean to make the choice more difficult! I can understand the desire to have something completely new, such as going to the CTR for a complete change of scenery, rather than the same style of recipe as the BRZ and ending up with the MX5. If you end up going to a CTR, it’s not like the MX5 won’t be around in the future if you decide you need to get back to a slow, lightweight RWD sports car. I’d love to take a type R for a spin. I reckon it would be a blast! Thanks for watching and commenting mate, all the best with your choice :)

Short version: Love it. Longer version: I don't feel like I'm missing out on any open air experience, that some ST owners have mentioned in regards to the RF. I haven't had any real issues with wind buffeting either, though I guess I apply common sense and realise that at highway speeds it is going to be noisy, that's pretty obvious. For around town driving, to and from work, I absolutely love being able to have the roof down. Blind spots are large, but I found it pretty quick and easy to get used to them and adapt my driving style, so once again no issues there.

Thanks very much mate, really appreciate it. To be honest it’s been the first time that being short has been advantageous. The ND2 has a telescopic steering wheel which should allow taller people to get a comfy seating position too. I have a CX-5 (had a MX5/Miata, but then had kids...) it has the same info/nav system. The touch thing is only really used to input address for the nav, something you really shouldn't be doing while driving anyway, so I'm fine with this safety feature. The USB ports only put out 1.1v, this is totally normal and typical for most (98%+) of USB devices. Yes if your phone is using a lot of juice it might not be enough to actually make the battery charge level go up, but it certainly enough so that it doesn't drain as fast. The 12v port is inside the center console on the CX-5 (another one in the rear cargo area) but in the 9mo I've had the car I have not plugged one thing into either. With USB in front, why would you? (That said, if you plug in a 2v USB charger here you can get more power for your phone/tablet).

Hi Shayan, there is definitely more wind noise than your standard sedan / hatch, but I wouldn't say it is anything excessive. It’s honestly not bad at all. Yes there is road noise that comes in, but it’s not an unacceptable amount. After all you’re buying a light weight sports car, so you’d expect it to be louder than a normal sedan / hatch. Roof down it is quite windy, but a set of ear plugs or ear phones and you’re sweet. For a 6 hour drive, the seating position will be a bigger concern than cabin noise, in my opinion.

I feel under certain conditions the MX5 can be a daily driver. One big stipulation is no kids. I don't have a family and I'm single. I'm seriously considering getting a MX5 very soon. Two things that make me hesitant to do it is the small trunk and having to fall into the seat and climb out. I'm afraid doing that every day will get old quick. I didn't realize it was so low to the ground. Reviewers always say the MX5 is meant as a weekend car or a second car but I feel that is said due to the small trunk and the fact that its a two seater. I'd love to know Mazdas official stance on the car. Did they really intend for it to be used occasionally for weekend trips and not as a possible daily driver? Why even make a car that you don't intend to be driven much?
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo7 жыл бұрын
I would agree with that. And my fiancé and I are a few years off having kids, so we agreed this was the time to get one, if I was ever to do it. Small trunk is something to consider, but it depends on how often you think you would ACTUALLY use it. Before getting the car I was really worried. Since getting it, it has only been an issue once (not being able to fit my umbrella in it). Getting in and out isn't that much of a hassle, as once you're in the seating position is fantastic. Granted i wouldn't want to get in and out every 2 seconds, but it's definitely not a problem. I reckon it depends on your mindset. Some people think that as soon as you have a kid you need a 7 seater tank. So depending on what you believe you NEED in a daily driver, the MX5 is a perfect DD.
@flipfloplogic7 жыл бұрын
I could get used to climbing in and out every day. I only travel to work and back home occasionally going into the next town for groceries and shopping. The trunk is big enough for a load of groceries especially for a single guy. I guess the big concern I have is hauling stuff from stores. I might see a nice chair or desk I want but I would have no way to get it home. Some places will deliver and I could buy a chair or desk online I suppose. I would have the same problem with a four door sedan so to be practical I would need a suv (tank), truck or hatchback. None of those three options appeals to me. I want a fun car that says to people I bought it because I wanted to not because I had to. I don't want a family car with four doors. Here in the U.S. two door cars (coupes) are rare. Everyone wants huge suvs. I want my car to make a statement. I want it to say this guy is single. He doesnt have a family. Yeah I wouldn't have the storage space most others have but I would be having a hell of a lot more fun getting around than they are and thats important too. Im still fighting against my practical side but I will be going to a local mazda dealer today with the necessary paperwork. I may or may not leave with one.
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo7 жыл бұрын
Well I hope you'll come away with one, because they are a hell of a lot of fun. Sounds like the practical arguments are all for things that MIGHT happen. In which case, find a mate who has a truck or SUV that you can borrow if you need to, and sling him a case of beer. Then everyone wins :D
@chuckcornelius1946 жыл бұрын
i bought a RF club 4 months ago. also no ball-and-chain, no kids, nothing big to haul around, so the RF is perfect. i look forward to driving it every time i get in. i did keep my old car (2003 Acura RSX) as a winter beater, or if i need long term service done on the MX-5. yeah, it's small and low, but assuming you don't have knee or lower back issues, one gets used to getting in and out, no problem. and once you're in, it's very comfortable and cozy. i just don't mind the lack of storage or trunk (boot) space. don't need it. it just depends on how you use a car, what you need it for. i do have my old beater if i ever need to haul stuff, but even if you can only have one vehicle, why suffer driving a big, fat, no fun car when you don't need the space 99% of the time? get the MX-5, enjoy driving every day, and rent the big fat car once a year when you need it.

How do you like the audio system?
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo7 жыл бұрын
G'day Tucker. To be honest I'm not an audiophile in any way, shape or form, but to me I would say it is ok. Certainly nothing special. With the roof up, and iPhone playing over Bluetooth, you can get it decently loud before it distorts and once you've increased the bass a bit it has a good sound to it. Roof down, I find it struggles a bit (though that could also be that my hearing sucks) so you have to crank it up which is then a bit awkward when you come to a stop. The headrest mounted speakers, which are used when you're in a Bluetooth phone call, are a great idea and work surprisingly well. If you are someone who is in to your stereos then I think it would be something you would want to upgrade. If you aren't overly fussed, then it does the job.

Hi mate, that would be the gopro mount slightly wobbling. I didn't use a secondary mic for this video, so the GoPro's mic picked up on it.

How do you find driving this car in heavy rain? Do you feel safe? Does it slide in puddes of water that appear out of nowhere?
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo4 жыл бұрын
Hey mate. I find it to be perfectly capable in heavy rain. I don't think it is any more susceptible to aquaplaning than any other small car. Granted you just need to exercise normal caution when it's greasy on the road. Sure it'll kick out if you provoke it, but it definitely doesn't come undone in the wet. As usual, tyres make the biggest difference. The OEM ones are fine, but there are better options out there (much worse ones too!) Thanks for watching :)

@@DavidBournePhotoandVideo Thanks Dave. Do you find seats comfortable on long drives?
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo4 жыл бұрын
@@VG-oc3jw Short answer- Yes. Longer answer- I do for stints up to 2.5-3hrs. After that I find I get a bit cramped and want to get out for a little bit. Because we drive on the right hand side the car, foot room gets robbed by the exhaust / trans tunnel, so you are limited with where you can move your legs around when you want to stretch.

I was thinking I could fill the passenger foot space with a combination of pillows/boards so he could lay down. Do you think that would be possible? Feel like the distance from the back of the passenger seat to the glove box dash area might be too small. Either way thanks for your quick reply! You still dailying yours?

What about road/wind noise? Is it bearable while travelling over 130 kmph?
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo6 жыл бұрын
I find it perfectly fine at 110kph, which is our highway speed. Only times I've been 130+ was on a track so didn't pay too much attention. Inherently the car is kinda noisy, since it doesn't have a lot of sound deadening etc, but it isn't unbearable at all. The RF is a LOT quieter with the roof up than the soft top at highway speed too. So if you've sampled a soft top and wonder if the RF will be the same, I can tell you it is a lot quieter / calmer.

Hi Furukan, ground clearance is listed as 118mm (so 11.8cm). It is able to deal with speedbumps and gutters deceptively well.

@@fdaolum the 2019 will get a revised engine, which will give slightly more power (20hp) and a higher redline (7,500rpm vs 6,900rpm) a dual mass fly wheel, backup camera will be standard and android auto / apple car play will be standard. Part from that, it's basically business as usual.

what about road noise esp on the highway?
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, there is definitely more road noise than a normal sedan / hatch. However it isn't anything I could consider excessive. Keeping in mind the panels are all thin and light, it means a fair amount of road noise comes through. Roof down around town is fine. On the highway it would get uncomfortable after a while. I tend to drive with earphones in 90% of the time and I don't notice the road noise at all.

How is this car on long journeys?
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo2 жыл бұрын
It’s great, only caveat is that I find after 2 and a half, 3 hours I’m pretty keen to get out and stretch my legs. Seeing as I am in a right hand drive car obviously the transmission tunnel takes up a fair chunk of leg real estate. Noise wise I find it’s all good, especially if you wear ear phones or ear plugs. Great on fuel, so yeah all good 😊

@@DavidBournePhotoandVideo Nice, I'm 6 foot looking for a car to buy in the future. What kind of mpg do you get on it? I was looking at what kind of car I would get when I most likely move to the mountains. And it's got a lot of twisty roads. Also does it need premium fuel or unleaded? I'm looking at the 1.5 version.
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo2 жыл бұрын
@@TDF2004 you should fit fine, unless you’re someone who has massively long legs and short arms (or vice versa). Especially if you’re getting an ND2, you get a telescopic steering wheel which would help finding a good driving position. Economy, on the highway I can get close to 5L/100Km which google is telling me is 47 US MPG. currently I’m averaging just under 7L/100km and that’s a mix of highway and city driving. Personally I like the extra torque of the 2.0L. You can argue that the 1.5L is a bit more zingy but personally I don’t think the 2.0L misses out on that roadster feel. I like to put 98 octane fuel in, however it will run on normal unleaded .
@TDF20042 жыл бұрын
@@DavidBournePhotoandVideo Cool, thanks man. I wanna pick one of these up in the future but would unleaded hurt the car? Or is it recommended?
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo2 жыл бұрын
@@TDF2004 I mean, I guess if they say it’ll run then it shooouuulllddd be fine. In saying that, I feel for the difference in price, compared to the cost of the car, it makes sense to run it on 98 or 95 if available. I’ve had mine for just over 5 years now and I still love every time I get behind the wheel, even if it’s a drive to work. But get it out on a set of twisties and it’s motoring bliss!

Any issues with the windshield cracking?
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo6 жыл бұрын
I was unlucky enough to cop a rock from a truck, on the highway, pretty early on in the piece, but it hasn't gotten any bigger, nor have I had any other cracks. Can't even fault the windscreen for that one because it was a decent smack.
@watchrob776 жыл бұрын
David Bourne that's good! I've read the miata forum and apparently a lot of ND owners have had to replace the windshield. Also would this be safe in snow and ice if you have snow tires
@DavidBournePhotoandVideo6 жыл бұрын
Fortunately (or unfortunately?) I don't have to worry about snow where I live. From what I've seen of other's experiences it seems as though some don't like taking their MX5 out in the snow, mainly because of the salt etc that gets dropped, not so much it's inability to deal with it, especially with proper tyres. I remember seeing Mazda Japan doing testing where they took an RF out to the snow and it handled it all perfectly fine. I would assume normal etiquette applies and you need to drive to the conditions, but that's no different to any other car.

@DavidBournePhotoandVideo7 жыл бұрын
Hi Filipe, yes you can turn the screen off by going to the home menu, scrolling over to the right, pressing the enter button then select "Turn off LCD". Radio, or Bluetooth, whatever you're playing, will continue to operate. Also, if you want it on, but it is too bright, the control dial that dims the gauge cluster will also dim the screen.
