this is gorgeous, I love the design! as far as sound goes, my first thought is to try and upsize the top fan to a 180mm or 200mm option, because those move more air and also produce a generally lower pitched, more pleasing hum at the same volume.

Would be interesting to see it fitted with high-end hardware with added second section housing custom watercooling loop. Less noise, better temps, more compute power, same footprint, and more space for this glorious soft warm light. Special kudos for not having RGB here! By the way, anyone having some Zalman Reserator vibes here too? : )
@mxcbuilds6633Ай бұрын
Thanks! The biggest limiting factor of this iteration was the size of walnut block I could get and the max cutting size of my laser cutter. Initial concept used a larger diameter base which allowed me to use a noctua 200mm fan up top. I also considered increase the height of the design but then I wouldn't be able to cut the slats on my laser...

This would fit PERFECTLY in my computer area! Actually it would fit perfectly ANYWHERE in home!!! But pretty much ALL your builds would because not only do I live in in the woods (just a wooded area, but I'm not in the middle of nowhere.. that would REALLY SUCK lol) but my house was built in the 70's when they used a lot more wood trim throughout the whole house. I LOVE THIS BUILD!! I would have to say it's my favorite build of yours!! It just sucks about the fan noise, but there are a few things that you can do to fix that... I think the simplest would be to get a high static pressure fan - specifically from Noctua. This is so they can spin at a low rpm and create enough 'suction' to pull the air through all those very small holes in your air filter. Then you should change the air filter.. you are getting ALL teh air in your system through the filter, and the fans have to spins so fast because the filter doesn't have very much porosity. So you gotta use one with bigger holes. I think you chose the one you did to make it spread the light around so it's more of a lamp... But you already did that with the cover thing you put the LED strip into... so it's not AS important to spread the light with the filter... What you could do is use one with bigger holes but find a very thin sheet of porous foam... I used to have one that would be perfect for your case, but it came with my window air conditioner LOL so I don't where to get it, or exactly what its called. You could probably find soemthign at a hobby store or maybe even a home improvement store... OR if you can find the same materiel that is used in computer cases that air used as filters on the intake.... I think they are just screens... But because ALL the incoming air on your case HAS TO go through a filter no matter what you use as a filter that is actually effective you WILL have this issue.... Maybe just getting a LARGER FAN will help.... and that way it can spin at a low RPM and still move a ton of air.... But I'm not sure if a 140 or 160mm fan will fit in your current setup, so you might have to redesign it to use a cap ON TOP of the slats so you could fit a bigger fan inside 🤷♂ ... but I do think you will HAVE TO get a high static pressure fan... if you are going with 120mm fan this your ONLY CHOICE is the Noctua A12x25 .. which is kind of expensive, but it's THE BEST Fan on the market for static pressure AND Noctua is FAMOUS for it's QUALITY and simply being THE BEST... PERIOD. - OR you can print your own fan blades (but you'll have to destroy the blades on another fan to use its hub for your printed blades... it's sounds weird to print new blades, but it can make a HUGE DIFFERENCE!! Check out Major Hardware and the Fan Showdown for more about that... you might like it :D EXCELLENT WORK THO!!! I wish I had skill to do this... and the tools... and the patience.... and the motivation.... LOL I LOVE the cases you come up with!!! Thank You for sharing them with us!!!
@mxcbuilds66332 ай бұрын
The top fan is a Arctic p14 static pressure fan. Already one of the better ones on the market. As for larger fans, it won't fin in this design as I couldn't find a wood block bigger than this for the base.

I like your sound comparison between keyboard/mouse to fan noise. I think there could potentially be a way to sturdy it up some more but idk so dont worry about it. I wanted to know if it's a good lamp, but i think I can tell it might not put a lot of light out. Maybe if you could have some sort of reflector strips running up from the LED to expand the light but seriously this is just small little things I'm thinking about. Overall, I think it is awesome, and it looks like a fun project!
@mxcbuilds6633Ай бұрын
Thanks, yeah there are many better ways to do noise comparisons. I simply don't have the proper equipment or set up to do something like that at the moment. The PC actually performs horrible as an actual lamp, too little light output.

You always make great builds, I think it would be cool if you challenge yourself to make more high airflow builds - maybe using 180mm fans or something. I think fully custom cases have the advantage of being able to work with air channels specifically designed for various components which is something we just don't see in traditional cases made for compatibility with many parts. Anyways I know visual design is first for you and you always deliver on that!
@mxcbuilds66332 ай бұрын
Thanks! I initially wanted to use a noctua 200mm fan for the exhaust on this build. But simply could not find a block of wood big enough. Even with this block (which was the largest I could find) I was scrapping for millimeters of internal space, had to shave away the internal edges of each slat or else the dust filter would not even fit.
@deanchur2 ай бұрын
@@mxcbuilds6633 Maybe look in other areas for a fan eg car parts, air conditioning and so on. Did you think about trying to do a bottom intake fan for this build in the base at all?
@warlordwossman57222 ай бұрын
@@mxcbuilds6633 I figured that was the case since you have used larger than 140mm fans in the past! I feel like wanting a wooden cylinder as a base would complicate things but at the same time was crucial for the aesthetic you were aiming for. Wonder if for a future build going with a dodecagon or something for the base would make it viable to get the 200mm noctua idea working. Looking forward to future projects!

This is so cool, but I have a few suggestions! I think an extra display port would go a long way!. Also I'm concerned about how big the holes are in your dust filter, as someone with cats if I were to repeat this build I would definitely add a filter to the top to prevent dust from falling in when its not in use, and use a finer mesh around the outside to prevent cat hair from entering from the sides. This may be the most difficult, but I would also add a secondary light that can be turned on without the computer being on so it truly can double as a lamp. But still this is super cool and has me sitting here itching to make another super cool sffpc!
