The MXR 126 Flanger/Doubler was a mainstay in Phil Lynott's bass tone. When Lizzy played live, it was always on. ;-)

@wikkidthings the outdated gear for old-schoolers - as you call it are still used in every high end studio where all your favorite music and albums are recorded and mixed. And SoundToys plugins basically models "old school" harmonic distortion of tape recorders, tube preamps, they modeled their fx/delay plugin after eventide h3000 harmonizer. .

All nice and well, but can it do Through Zero Flange like the real classic sounds of the 70's?

Didn't see that one coming

Is there a replacement for hardware these days, that sounds like the original unit? I'm thinking like how Phil Lynotts bass sounded on "Waiting for an Alibi"...

Good ear...The MXR 126 was exactly what Phil used. ;-)

It's funny how all the emulations get us closerto recreating the 70's sound, but music more and more sounds far from it.

I have Eventide Instant Flanger and A/DA Flanger (Plugin Alliance/UAD). But only MXR adds magical touch.

Hell's Bells , What on Earth does the ( DOUBLER ) button do? For this model MXR rackmount flanger doubler ? Please Help! Thanks
@castlehill67175 жыл бұрын
Wat Wat I believe it first, doubles the track, slightly detunes the secondary replica track by a few cents, and finally the width knob delays the replica track by a given ms. You can recreate the effect easily in a daw, however the hardware doublers can be useful specifically in live situations, unless for some reason you just love the way this specific circuit sounds.

ccol BUT why didn't they copy the more esoteric and rare vertical half rack flanger and phaser?

Randy didn't use that! He used the YAMAHA E1010 in the low millisecond range for that tubular ambiant flange sound. This MRX does the flange cycles round unlike the E1010. Randy added thickness to his low settings on his mxr distortion + while most of the distortion came from his one wire mode cascading the tubes. All the samples KZbinrs are showing is an out of tune E1010 which can be dialed in by hand and a good ear when you open it up and try it.

@wizprodux Thank you, this is exactly why I'm less & less interested in UAD. I'm interested in the cutting edge of audio production, not recreating some washed-up shit from the 70s. Fabfilter, Flux, Soundtoys & Slate are light years ahead of UAD IMHO. UAD=spending countless hours precisely replicating outdated gear for old-schoolers. Don't even care.

This really doesn't have the depth of the original. Possibly because of what KZbin does to mutilate the audio.

I love MXR but this was never a great-sounding unit.
