This will cost you a FORTUNE to fix properly. Downtune it, and get some moisture in it. Use it only for recording and downtune it for storage. Maybe tune it to D and use a capo for less tension. Cheers.

I am guessing the wear on the fingerboard can be filled in with Rosewood dust and CA and the body can be repaired without replacing the top (which might well ruin the sound). My guess would be around $800 ... 20 hrs labor at $40/hr.

So many stories and still in one piece.
@ernestochang17444 жыл бұрын
Carbon fibre will let you have just as many stories if not even more before finally imploding in on itself because of the sheer string tension and temperature changes, usually guitars older then this are kept being glass and a well humidifed room with no string tension, anything made out of really thin wood supported by really thin walls making that oval shape has got poor stability in it anyways, theres a reason why Electric bodied guitars solid bodied dont have that huge problem as they get older, for example ive never seen a 1951 esquire warped body, neither have i seen a 1959 gibson warped body where it tries ot implode in on itself, neither stratocaster or precision or jazz basses do this weird phenomenon Acoustic guitars are very well known for Destroying themselves in the aging process. Meanwhile Electric basses and electric guitars, the only destroying here, is you, you are the deciding factor if this guitar outlives you and others in the future, as for acoustic guitars ,it seems that theyre like a fragile weak princess that needs air conditioning every 2 or 3 days, what a shame really

I had a 65 Gibson Dove years ago. I loved that guitar. Bought it used. Unfortunately the 60's Doves had thin tops and were prone to cracking and the bridge pulling up. My bridge pulled up. Since I live in Michigan I drove 2 hours to Kalamazoo to the Gibson factory where it was built. They accepted it for repair. In fact they had the guy that built it repair it. In about a month it was done. NO Charge. It didn't matter that I bought it used. It was good for about a year and then the bridge pulled up again. Took it back to Gibson and once again they repaired the guitar for no charge. They buffed it out and it was not only beautiful but perfect. This time they told me about the thin wood and the extra braces and I might want to get rid of it since it looked brand new. They were very honest and never charged a me a cent. To Gibson's credit all of the work on the guitar was free of charge. I took it back to the shop I bought it from and he offered to trade me even for Bob Seger's 60's gold top les paul that Bob had just traded in an hour before I got there. 2nd biggest mistake I made in my life. I didn't take the les paul. Instead I took a new SG that I kept for 2 months and then traded that in. Your Dove would definitely be worth fixing up. Keep an eye on the bridge.

Entertaining story of the Kzoo repairs! As a guy who comes from Kalamazoo (now residing in Germany), I'm curious about when you had those repairs done, since I thought Gibson left Kzoo for Asia many moons ago (?). Does the old Gibson shop still exist, even if under a new name or something?

It's a very nicely matured guitar, so yeah that's certainly part of the amazingness. Maybe more cracks than usual because never dealt with in 57 years! Some dreads have a spot worn right through the wood of the top and braces showing, so I hope adding some internal cleats and careful gluing .etc. give this guitar many years of stability with no real impact on tone.

My grandpa has done acoustic guitar repairs since he was 19 years old. He actually recently restored a very old style mandolin. And it is playable and looks completely and totally untouched still. His personal custom guitar is absolutely beautiful. It was made at his previous workplace. CB custom guitars in Fayetteville Tennessee. If you have an Instagram is love to shoot you some of photos of his incredible work and his guitar. He only does 1-2 projects at a time and this is only form of income. I showed him your video and he just loves this piece. His background in music is bluegrass and country and he said this guitar just screams classic country. Anyways hit me up and if you’re interested my grandpa would proudly help you restore such a gorgeous piece of art. Keep strummin and pickin and never let this guitar stop singing.

As an acoustic builder and repairer, I think the concern for the structure is a bit overblown. Yes the pickguard has shrunken and cracked the top but that is probably complete now and does not warrant removing that large pickguard for repairs and possibly causing more damage during removal or having the pickguard warp. Yes fill and cleat the cracks especially the one up by the fretboard but do it without PG removal.The bridge will probably hang in there for a long time before regluing becomes critical and yes I would lose the metal like some others have suggested when you do a bridge reglue.

I have a '95 Dove which is absolutely sensational. It's a bit of an odd duck as it's had the original bridge has been replaced with a '70s style bridge, so in terms of price I bagged it at a steal due to the unoriginality. It is so deep, warm and wonderful with a sweet, articulate top end, literally one of the very best acoustics I've ever owned, played or heard. I put a Seymour Duncan MagMic in it that I had kicking about in a drawer and it really is a match made in heaven in terms of live tone, one of those lucky coincidences. Your Dove is glorious, please keep us posted on how the repairs go!

If I were you I’d decide if I wanted to play it live or not. In a writing/studio/home setting that thing will live a long time and you could repair it bit by bit and save some dough. If it’s gonna be lugged around rehearsals, shows, and tours it’ll need the repairs sooner and it would make sense to do it all at once. It’s an awesome guitar so it’s awesome to watch it get the playing it needs. Rock on dude.

You'll get different opinions, but those frets are still plenty good for a level and crown. The pickguard thing is pretty common in those guitars, as is the belly-ing, which is far from the worst I've seen. There are different ways to give the bridge, and by extension the top, more support. Definitely, it's a problem that gets worse and accelerates as the strings lever on the bridge. I'd get it fixed if you plan to keep playing it, and it sounds great, so it's worth the investment.
@tipp554 жыл бұрын
Great video and a great guitar Matthew. I'm sure when you have the fingerboard fixed and those cracks cleated and the braces reglued, a proper set-up and the guitar will sound significantly better that it already does. Those soundhole cracks at the end of the fingerboard are I would guess, the most important issues to address. Also, if you ask the tech to replace the metal saddles with a plain bone one, the sound will be enhanced. The originality may be slightly compromised but it will sound better. The pickguard should be preserved at all cost as it's not only a piece of art, but the guitar would imho, be greatly diminished without it. Good luck with it and I look forward to seeing videos of it's restoration as it happens. It's a treasure of a guitar. Wish I owned it! :-)

It still sounds wonderful. Techs get pretty techy sometimes. My experience has been, that unless you have a really really experienced tech, that the sound seems to change for the worse with major work. No great revelation here, but having been on the negative side of that equation I am always hesitant to have a tech do major work unless I can verify that he or she is very well experienced in the exact work I need. The top pulling up is just the nature of the beast over time with some older guitars. It can be fixed along with the bracing at the same time, most likely, since the bridge will have to be removed and re-glued anyway. Is some of the bracing loose? The bridge plate may be loose, also. Not sure about that top, but I think those cracks can be fixed without having to re-top it, but you'll likely have to lose that pickguard. Fingerboard can be replaced and rebound... or not rebound, your call.
@ericsfc1ea.164 жыл бұрын
Well worth the repairs needed, it sounds great!!! The bridge and fingerboard extension issues are significant, possible internal issues w/ bracing and I agree the frets may be ok in the present condition but you should probably have them leveled and recrowned because the geometry will change slightly w/ the other repairs.

Just my opinion but rock on. That's an amazing instrument.

The top cracks can be steamed rendering an almost perfect top...the bracing and bridge are serious issues. I believe the dove has maple back and sides and some of those builds sound unique and fabulous. That was some kick ass blues licks at the end of this vid....damn that was sweet
