This car is an inspiration for my 91 DA. It has a tired old B18A1, needs a paint job badly, has expensive mods where it matters and eBay elsewhere (such as lips), still running OBD0 on a chipped PR4. Can't wait to swap in a high compression B20 and throw on some coilovers. Gotta love purpose built cars whether it's a daily or a track car. Or both. 😎
@GarageBuiltHondas7 жыл бұрын
+Unliv3D your DA sounds exactly like this car in 2015. I had the A1 and ran it so hard and it never once let me down. @GarageBuiltHondas7 жыл бұрын
+Roel Pastors thanks Roel, I'm probably going to change the valve cover before next season also. Wrinkle red?
@roelpastors95887 жыл бұрын
Yes wrinkle red is awesome but it comes down to personal preference. Red will really match the current color scheme though. LATOMMYLA had a very good tutorial recently on how to get it right and Zosh how to NOT lol. First you sandblast it down to remove all the old paint. Then clean with some brake cleaner. mask of all parts not to be sprayed. tip for the spark plug holes use some old sparkplug wires and cut off the wires. same for PCV valve and breather pipe and oilcap (cut off the top so you just cover the threading). I used and old piece of hose. then go one thick layer horizontal. wait 10 mins. then one thick layer vertical. wait 10 mins. One final layer diagonal. Wait 10 mins. Then really bring the heat either by using a pre-heated oven/put in oven to watch it wrinkle (may not please the wife so much lol) or a heat gun. Then let it sit for 24 hours to really let it cure. The results I had are amazing! It looks even better than OEM because the wrinkle is more coarse.
@GarageBuiltHondas7 жыл бұрын
+Roel Pastors Dude, thanks so much for the instructions!! I'm going to try this method and I love the tips for masking off the holes. I normally use painters tape and a sharp blade to mask off certain areas, some of those sound easier.

for bigger brakes and caliper, and not having to change hubs or knuckles.. You can use a 93 Prelude rotor and caliper... caliper will need a bracket (no biggie), and the rotors, you will need to drill out to an oval shape the stud bolt holes (civic is 4x100 & prelude is 4x114)!

@@GarageBuiltHondas . . . I'm old school Honda... I bought a new CRX in 90, and back then there wasn't an aftermarket market for Hondas. Also, if you use the stock EF header (it was 4-1 directly), cut a flange and bolt on a used 14b turbo, used an Audi 5000 intercooler (redid the ends) the car ran high 11's all day long, and used as a daily using the stock D16A6!!!. All this for under $500. Remember we're talking back in the mid 90's (Ferrari's and Lambo's were in the high 12's low 13's!)

High comp pistons? I wonder how an ITB set up would work and run with your engine? The looks and sound plus throttle response is mental for ITB.....
@GarageBuiltHondas7 жыл бұрын
+Princess Solace No, not the pistons. This engine is the high comp version of the JDM B20B which has a slightly higher compression ratio and about 15-20 more HP than the 97-98 low comp spec.

You could use the Hasport Hydro/Cable conversion kit, or a few companies make an actual kit to add the CMC inside the pedal assembly. I've seen some in the engine bay also. I don't have much knowledge on it though. Maybe someone reading will help fill it in!

Is it a 9.6:1 high compression b20 or 8.8:1 low compression. Bro if your racing road course you totally totally want to swap out to a b16 cable tranny you'll have Soo much more power out of the turns and alot more acceleration on the straights. I know there's a big difference in power between the two and from what I hear the high compression b20 was grossly underrated and wasn't actually 146hp it was actually closer to 160 I've always heard. And upwards of 135 lbft torque . Great hatch though , ill always love ef's and bseries motors non vtec or vtec. I had a built ls/vtec in a 91 crx Hf which was pretty quick , ran mid 12's on drag radials. For brakes on my Crx I had PBR/axis metal master pads (bit harder the hotter they got) brembo blank rotors and good ridge stainless steel lines all the way around with crx si trailing arms and discs in the rear and a master cylinder from a 91 integra. I used a 91 Si front seat bar , 90 Integra rear sway bar. H&R race springs, kyb Agx adjustable dampening struts and skunk 2 adjustable upper arms. I also had some factory bracing that I added that the Si comes with that the HF does not, and it makes a difference. I had numerous other mods done as well not gonna list them all , your ride brings back great memories to me of my old Crx, I sold it unfortunately about 7 years ago not because I wanted to but because I had to in order to pay my rent as I went through some tough times for a bit which was aweful. I literally cried when it drove away. I'll never forget it or what it felt like to pull through the gears and dive in and out of turns with that car, never had a more reliable car on top which just made it that much better . Good luck with yours bro.

Thanks for that story, I loved it!! Mine is a 99 spec high compression with the knock sensor. It made 135 to the wheels with just bolt ons, hoping for more now that I have cams. I do have a b16 transmission now with an aftermarket LSD and it feels amazing. I love the way the car runs at the track and it's so enjoyable to drive. I'm hoping to get it tuned next and see what kind of power it has in store. If you look through my channel you'll see that I swapped all the parts from this car to a different shell but still the same.

how to identify the spring rate on my ground control springs? also I noticed on the koni damper it seems to have a spot to hold the original mount cup for the brake lines but I cannot get that mount off of the OE dampers any ideas? edit: I see your brake lines are floating also.
@GarageBuiltHondas7 жыл бұрын
+Dandy Lion You're correct, mine float. My particular set of GC's from Eibach have the 500 on the rears for the spring rate. I believe many have the metric rating on them. Google it for the conversion. There's a few threads online about it.

Hi. Looking for a B20. How can I tell lf it's high compression and if it has the P8R head? Thanks.
@GarageBuiltHondas6 жыл бұрын
Look at the head casting. Only 99-01 are high comp and they will have a knock sensor. That head will also be stamped P8R on the head.
@daniellemanuel12346 жыл бұрын
Are all 99-01 P8R heads ? Thanks.
@GarageBuiltHondas6 жыл бұрын
No, most are P75. You'll need to inspect it yourself to see which head.
@daniellemanuel12346 жыл бұрын
Is there a big power difference in the 2 heads ? Reason I am asking is I have no pick and pull yards around here. I can't look at the casting numbers b4 I buy. Thanks.
@GarageBuiltHondas6 жыл бұрын
Not that I've seen. The p8r has those larger valves and the cams are different but the power difference might be like 1-3 hp. I don't believe there are many camshaft options for the p8r head though where the p75 shares the same head/cams as the b18a and b18b and there are a lot more options.

I highly recommend that your run a b16 transmission with that b20b. Btw I'm loving the EF and enjoying the videos!
@GarageBuiltHondas7 жыл бұрын
+Robert Reid thanks Robert! I have plans to install one in January/February!
@robertreid41387 жыл бұрын
nice! Fwiw the ls/b16 transmissions use the smaller diff/ring gears and if your swapping in a ctr lsd you will need a gsr/type r ring gear and counter shaft. The combo of a gsr counter shaft/ring gear with b16 gears & ctr lsd into any case really is the best stock parts set up that can be built for a na b series track car. ctr lsds pop up used now and again on ebay for ~450 shipped and sometimes $400. If you score one I could help you out with the gsr transmission parts. I keep spares, but have never broken anything since running the larger stuff. My drag racing buddies would break the ls stuff with some frequency... prob wont be a factor for you, BUT consider much faster corner exists once you do put a LSD in. Garage build hondas 2019 build? :D
@GarageBuiltHondas7 жыл бұрын
+Robert Reid wow, thanks for all that info! I'm not super familiar with transmission parts. I'm hoping I have no problems with my trans. It's a JDM b16 with the stock LSD. It drove fine when I drove the car home but never got a chance to really beat up on it.
@robertreid41387 жыл бұрын
