My 2000 Toyota Hilux for overlanding in Africa | the 1st video
Overlanding enthusiasts, old school Toyota Hilux fans and those planning their own overland trip through Africa watch along as I show you how I converted my 2000 Toyota Hilux into a basic overlanding vehicle. One that will take me to every country in Africa over the next 10 years #5410Africa
But I'm not done, so pitch in with your advise on what I still need to do to make this the perfect vehicle to conquer Africa. I definitely need some help in picking a suspension...

Awesome to see an overlander that will get you almost anywhere that doesn't cost the same as a house! Not like some of the other KZbin channels! 👍👍👍 The attitude of keep it light will mean it's still running for the next 20 years!

Thanks Anton. That's what I am going for & trying to show. You don't actually need everything you see on other vehicles, get what you need, plus its more money and weight. I think a lot of people will be surprised with the final setup, most wont even think it is an overland vehicle, because it will be so basic, but everything you need to survive on a trip in Africa will be there. Heading to Botswana next month, hope you join for that!

howsit Nick just a bit of an idea for the back of the bukkie on the roof (inside)put 3 eyes about half way and another 3 in line right at the back and put a cargo net for things like your chairs and bedding that way you won't have to go digging for it and getting it caught up on other stuff even (if you have you ground tent still other then the rooftop tent )you can put the in there as well it will save you a lot of ground space inside below all that

Nice mnr!

Nice rig mate, (neighbour) I'm also only doing solo wild camping trips in South Africa. Can you charge the aux battery in the Nat Luna via solar?
@NickfrNamibia
@NickfrNamibia Жыл бұрын
Not on the older boxes. Buy a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 75/15 and screw or rivet it onto the box. Attach your battery and solar panels to the controller. As easy as that. Ive actually disconnected the cable running from my cars own battery and only charge from 2 x 100W panels. I have all the functionality of the box but charge from solar

the best suspension is one you can afford , the most important part of a suspension is shocks . and by doing it last is the correct way to do it . so i would suggest do pedders shocks , have had great success with it , i have to say looking at the current state of the hilux here you don`t need to upgrade the leafs and torsion bars yet and if they break in africa you can replace them with local sourced parts . and always add a extra shock front and rear to your spares bin and also some u joints
@NickfrNamibia
@NickfrNamibia 2 жыл бұрын
up to this point Im still not sure what to get, but like you said cost at this point will be the determining factor. To be honest, I havent heard of Pedders yet, will do some research. SA? Aus? US product? You'r not the first to tell me that the suspension looks fine at the moment, so I've decided to keep as is for now. Just completed a 7500km trip to Botswana and back and honestly I dont have any complaints.... thanks for advise :)
@R_ovrlnd
@R_ovrlnd 2 жыл бұрын
@@NickfrNamibia it is a pleasure if been building expedition vehicles vehicles for Africa for 13 years and I have fitted all brands. Pedders is an Australian brand . You will be easier to find standard leafs and torsion bars than let's say lifted springs. What I will suggest is to strip the leafs and clean and grease them and change all the bushes also . Another thing is to carry an extra torsion bar adjusting bolt assembly as it is something spares shops order as needed and Toyota don't usually keep stock of these parts
@NickfrNamibia
@NickfrNamibia 2 жыл бұрын
thanks again for the info! yeah, getting them fixed on the road, even if we have to strip from a scrapped a vehicle is way more important to me than fancy brands and pretty colors. That is one of the main reasons I went for the older hilux. I'll definitely look to update my spares list as well👍

Hello there. I was advised to stay away from this particular model of Hilux for world traveling. The reason I was given is that it's a popular model in the insurgency environment, and it could make me a more visible target. This is, of course, not in South Africa, but more towards active war areas. I'd love to hear your honest opinion about this, since I'm not sure it's pure fear mongering or an actual fair tip.
