Coming from Detroit, growing up in the 90s and seeing techno go from 200 people crammed in a sweat box to thousands of people at a festival or large venue, gives me mixed feelings. I witnessed the birth of the Detroit/Berlin exchange and saw many friends develop this snobbery. I love seeing techno DJs get their recognition and the bag, but I can’t deal with the egos.

Yoo! I went back to Berghain in August 2022 and I hear you. It's going to be hard to put into words and as it's a decade since I was last in the space, perhaps it's no surprise that something was distinct... I still found the music incredible though. I danced for so long that my shoes actually died 😂

Heard brother, i have been living in Berlin for the last 4 year, just realizing more and more, how much i grow apart from that space. Hopefully there is still some nights to catch up before abounding it completely.

I remember last time I was in Leeds (2015 ish ?) having a conversation with Dj victor simonelli, and he said that people in the States go out more to be seen, and that the people of Leeds and UK were definitely much more into their music. Miami is like that now, I hate it, and people who claim to be really into their tunes just tend to follow the trendiest djs like John Summit, most haven't heard of the likes of Roman Flügel or DVS1 for example. At least in Berlin people aren't glued to their phones filming the Dj all evening. I heard they occasionally ask people on the door at Berghain which DJ's are playing, and I think that's a good idea...

Have you ever been to any other clubs in Berlin that you'd recommend as an alternative ? I was just listening to a 🔥 Marshall Jefferson set from Suicide club 1996, but according to locals it's a little touristy. I've also heard about Sisyphos, watergate and of course the legendary Tresor.

A if you do come over again, gimme a heads up. I totally get what you said in this video, I've felt the same about Berlin a lotta times (been spending a lot of my life here the last 15 years or so). And you're right about Berlin having some pretty fugly / edgy bits but you know what there are some really great places to chill I can point you to or even show you. I really felt what you said and I'm in and out of love with Berlin too. Maybe it's normal 🤔👍🏻💪🏻

The berliners do take themselves a little bit too seriously at times. The whole techno aesthetic is a bit cliche and passe now tbh, even people up here in scotland are dressing up in all black like their in the matrix or blade nowadays, its so conformist and uniform. these techno people forget its just about having a bit of fun.

exactly the conformity of it is what really surprised me, berlin and berghain is the apex of club, night life and techno culture. this is where the thing we love so much should be represented to its highest form and all i kept seeing were tons of people who look the same trying to act like they’re so different or better. weird. but like i said in the video, maybe it’s my fault, i got too close to sun and i’ve been too often, absence makes the heart grow fonder as they say, i’ll go back again with an open heart and mind and make sure my whole trip isn’t focused on berghain alone and i’m sure i will change my mind.

@@TAZS Coming from NY, my friends and I went to Berghain for the first time the weekend after you went and felt similarly - it was was a bit of a scene Sunday afternoon. It felt like I was at Electric Daisy Carnival, but people just decided to wear their dark festival outfits, like a uniform. For 90% of the people there, felt like Berghain was their personality, lol, like it was the place to be and to be seen. I guess I was expecting it to be a bit more diverse, and was disappointed on how homogeneous the crowd felt. Maybe its a cultural thing or I might of had an unrealistic expectation of it all, I don't know. To be fair though, the vibe on Saturday night into Sunday morning was a bit different - mostly tourists such as ourselves but seemed like they were genuinely happy to be there to enjoy themselves. With that said, loved the music, dj sets were on point and I recognize not just the quality but also the variety of music the club is trying to highlight. The production and scale of the venue was extremely impressive, probably some of the best I've seen. Definitely one of the best venues for electronic music, but also feel like its not the end all, be all of techno - there are still great, unique parties in the future to be had.

been living in Berlin for almost 2 years, and I'm black, from London originally, definitely gonna be leaving haha, might try and secure the passport tho. black people are lost out here can't lie... and you definitely get to feel how black you are. But yea, Black people can't bully any other race, so we bully each other, smh.

yeah man it’s sad to see. i’m sure it’s different when you actually live there etc fully immerse yourself in the creative community but it would nice to see some of that without the need of licking peoples arses of letting them talk to you in any way. i just wish we could be more supportively each other but i guess this happens everywhere in its own 😢

@@TAZS On the flip side, since writing this, I realise there's so much about Berlin that I love. It's a European NY, before it got expensive. A lot of genuine characters, and humbleness. The scene is the scene, you're gonna meet dickheads in every scene worldwide. But there is definitely a degree of truth here I found missing in London and, I can't deny, the culture here has been ultra-transformative towards my values and curiosity. The good with the bad, that's what I'm tryna say I guess...

lol! Love your podcast. Most gay clubs are like that now. Full of druggies not into the music. It’s growing up & knowing your worth. Most are jealous & looking who is the new cat here. You don’t make friends in a club cause most are fuvked up & won’t even remember you outside. I would say go there less & check other places.
