After their refresh a few years ago, I figured I would speak to a few of the quality issues I found on my 2023 Gibson SG Standard. This was my first Gibson guitar, and my first new guitar I've ever purchased. Obviously everything I cover are just things that I found and I'm sure plenty of others have had completely different experiences with the new Gibson guitars. No clue if it is relevant, but my SG was made Dec. 23rd of 2023.

I just bought a 2023 Gibson Les Paul Studio a few days ago. The action on mine was really high as well. Intonation was terrible. It’s at my guitar tech getting a setup as we speak. I was so surprised I couldn’t get away with playing it for a while, before I had to take it in to be looked at. It was like I had to take it in right away, I couldn’t play it. Disappointing? YES. But, it’s my first Gibson, and I’m so excited to go pick it up when finished. Your video was bang on, with how I’m feeling.

I totally agree on all points here. I owned some regular USA Gibsons, I wasn't exactly blown away. I played a lot of them at my local music store, lots of them felt and sounded worse than other Chinese, Korean and Indonesian made instruments that hung in the same room. I got a Gibson Custom Shop Junior half a year ago from an online retailer on an amazing discount and that guitar is probably what people expect when they buy regular USA Gibsons: stays in tune, sounds great, feels awesome to play. It's still not perfect, a bit rough in some spots. If you want perfect, get a Japanese made guitar like an ESP or an Ibanez.

Factory setups are highly variable. A basic in store setup should come with the sale and that was the routine in the olden days.

I have some gibsons from 2012 and 2015 both an SG and a Les Paul, got them used last year. They are both setup awesome. I think used the way to go for 1- price and 2- that person already went through and QC fixes and setups etc. Also had a epiphone standard and it had a lot of issues my luthier had to fix during setup. At the end of the day like you said, people are people, they have good days and bad days and you may get unlucky with certain guitars.

Back in 2021, I bought a Gibson Explorer and returned it after finding the seam where the neck meets the body already had a line where the clear coat had cracked. Returned it right away. It had come straight from Gibson, too, so super lame. After going to Reddit to see what they thought the opinions were varied. Some were even complaining about my wanting to return the guitar because, "because the seam would show up anyway over time". Had the line shown up after owning it then fine but no way should anyone accept issues with a brand new EXPENSIVE guitar. Good job returning it and getting another!

For as much as Gibson charges for their products, there should be absolutely no issues. To me, taking a guitar back that costs that much is unacceptable. I have numerous guitars that cost much less that have arrived in perfect condition. Many came from Indonesia. Great Channel also.

I love your philosophy on guitars. I do very similar things like play a guitar awhile before really looking at it. Kind of have to know what you're working with. I really enjoy doing all of the setups and tweaking until you get it just right.

i made change of gibson guitar to esp edwards guitar for classic gibson types. Iam finding very much better quality price ratio and much better sound. Esp edwards is build in japan so it is giving some pride to play our model :) Edwards Les Paul custom is perfect guitar. It is my favorit guitar i did ever play.

I bought a Maybach SG from “ quality Germany” that cost WAY more than Gibson, same issues 😮 Really considering selling it and just get an Epiphone.🤷🏼‍♂️

Even with QC issues, it is still objectively better than most of the guitars you will find coming out of the east (except Japan). 1. Better wood that is aged 2. Single piece bodies instead of a bunch of pieces glued together 3. Nitro finish 4. Quality wiring, switches, jacks, pots, and caps. I’m sure there are others that I am forgetting, but the point is that USA made instruments are of a higher quality because they are built with better materials.

This is so sad but it’s true. I went to see the newest traditionals and they had horrible QC issues. I put it back and was more amazed by the Emily Wolfe Epiphone than the Traditional 60 LP

IMO if you're buying an expensive guitar from any country, you should be able to assume that the increased cost is for increased attention to detail and/or increased value of the components. So if a builder is using basic components -- regular woods, OEM hardware/pickups, regular fretwire -- then I would expect the increased cost to mean that there was care taken with the building process. So are "mistakes" or imperfections the end of the world? No, but they're irritating because you had to pay extra for them.

Hey, @dewey7330 -- I bought a DSL40CR (the newer model with the 2 master volumes) about 2 weeks ago. I spent way too much time thinking about which way to go for my first tube amp after playing for 30+ years. It's a great amp and GC will get you under $750 for it on the phone. I had to return the first one because it was flat-out defective, but the second one I got is perfect. I have played it a bunch of times and still haven't tried it with a boost pedal because it can get a ton of gain on its own, but I can't wait to try that, too. I like the high/low power option, and the extra speaker outputs will let me run pretty much any external cab setup I want. I tried it on a 2x12 external cabinet and that sounded even better than the stock 12-inch but the stock speaker is just fine on its own. I don't know how much of this is just that it's a tube amp and how much of it is that it's a Marshall, but the note clarity is, well, inspirational. I play hard rock to metal, and have been using solid state and Line 6 modeling stuff for years, and this amp with zero pedals is the root sound I've longed for, that growl and grit but it sounds .... real, I guess, if that makes sense? Like an EMG 81/85 through a Line 6 started to sound really bad to me over the past couple of years, just very digital and sterile. I was even going to pull the EMGs out of a couple of guitars and go back to passive to see if that would help, but playing the EMGs through this Marshall, my first thought was, "Oh, so THAT'S how it's supposed to sound." Also: A lot of conflicting opinion on this online, it seems, but I can tell you, this amp sounds good at any volume because of the dual volume controls for both channel and master. I'm still learning how to use them together he best, but so far so good. Do it, dude. Not to fanboy GC, but the guy on the phone gave me a great price and zero-interest financing for 4 months. One thing I did ask for was to get one from the warehouse and not a store so that I wouldn't get a display model, and they did that no problem. One more plus -- the bias jacks are on the outside of the chassis, and there's a YT video of how to bias your tubes with a multimeter, it's super simple and did make the amp sound even better. I'm loving this amp and like I said, I spent WAY too much time researching and shopping around.

They are thrown together in a factory ...so many per hour....per day, etc. However, the idea is more out of the door....quantity instead of quality.....cost cutting things like final set up, etc. They do a basic generic set up, string hieght etc....pack it and then off to the next.....they all suck right out if the box. Then you have the middle man. Guitar center or whoever....that is the retailer.....some give the extra attention and some do not with intonation, string height or neck relief. The good thing is....everything is there for you to make it into a great player.....if you know how. However, the smaller neck to body joint of the SG design will require more attention more often than the les paul.....truss rod adjustment, string height changes.....you will see!! Anyways, good luck with your new SG!! I like that large guard style better than the 61 reissue....but I am not a fan of the Grover tuners......I prefer the older gibson deluxe style ones.....which is actually keeping me from buying the same model you just bought.

I just had to send back 2 Gibson les Paul standards 60s back to back problems n flaws with both. The last one the bridge post was too deep on one side all the way down n the other post way up so it was slanted and the binding was perfect on one side of the neck and had a ridge on the other side where the wood meets the binding and fretboard only one side had a ridge all the way down the neck Ike they shaved the binding down too far or something plus it was bad on some parts of the body and I’m telling you I’m 47 I’ve owned several Gibsons I love Gibson n never had a problem with not one until now back in the 90’s and early 2000’s they were always perfect, now it’s hit or miss I realize you can’t buy online unless you’re ready to maybe have to go through 3 or 4 before you get one that ain’t riddled with blemishes and flaws. It sucks because I’ve always loved Gibson and repped that brand hard my whole life. I sent back two so far I’m literally afraid to chance it on ordering and trying again cuz I feel like it’s gonna be another lemon 🍋 and I feel bad having to keep calling and returning guitars. Plus it’s a major bummer and pain in the ass!

I hope everybody knows, none of this is due to incompetent workmanship out of Nashville, and everything to do with the rushed table time each station gets to work on it. If they actually gave employees enough time to do the job right there would be minimal QC issues. I feel bad for the workers that get blamed for this.

This would be rectified if production slowed down enough, but more and more imbeciles are content with paying premium prices for crap, and suckers continuously excuse it out of fear that their wallhangers value will depreciate, so things will just keep getting worse.
