My 2024 Reading Goals

😱😱😱 I'm dreaming; it's the only explanation for how my book ended up being your last TBR jar pick and in the SAME video as TWO Janny Wurts books. Grace of Kings: so this is basically reskinned history in a modified Asian-inspired fantasy setting with an added narrative re: the gods. It's the Chu-Han Contention period of Chinese history with Mata being a stand-in for Xiang Yu (項羽) & Kuni for Liu Bang (劉邦). It sticks very faithfully to the historical record with very clear analogs for characters, events, etc. Overall, I enjoyed it, though I haven't managed to get to the next one yet-I've heard it becomes more of its own thing from book 2. Daughter of the Empire: this is one of my all-time favorite series. Not only because it's a story that's well written and still holds up today, but because it's the first fantasy novel I remember reading where I saw someone like me represented in the protagonist. I reread it every few years and it still moves me, every time. Curse of the Mistwraith: another book and series that I love. I've read this entire series on publication and I am beyond excited that I'll have the eleventh and final volume in this epic to end all epics next year!

I was quite drawn by those 📚 your “Older” category, though I actually already own all but one from your “SciFi” set (surprise!!! 🥳). I do enjoy the random lucky-dip draws, especially when the wrong’uns erupt out of it 😆

😂 The look on your face after the third TBR jar... culling... was priceless! That's a solid line up, and I'm stoked (worried?) SotD is amongst some real heavyweights! I mean, Elric of Mabginiginmonmnon? Black company? Damn! The latter gave me real early games workshop vibes. It's not suuuuper Grim®, but very dark™! Hope you enjoy all those picks Dom!! 🤘

I recently finished book 1 of Ryan Cahill's Bound and the Broken series. I loved this so much I plan to continue this series in 2024, and can't wait to get back to this story!

Book two is my favourite so far, really loved that one and the novellas have been mostly fantastic too!

I love the different categories! Really nice way to split up books and get a decent balance. I kind of want to do something similar now (the organising is just great), especially the TBR Jar Lucky Dip, but I've kind of already thrown together my 2024 reading goals xD Three of your sci-fi titles are on my list for next year, too! Alien Clay, Shards of Earth, and Empire of Silence. Have high hopes for all of them! Yaaaay for Rise Red Kingdom and Palom!! I looooooved Grace of Kings. Especially the storyteller-style narrator. I also could have sworn you'd already read Hall of Bones (beyond the first chapter, I mean) :O Lots of great reading!

I have heard so many good things about that Wurts/Feist series! I'm hopping to read her standalone, The Master of Whitestorm. Unfortunately The Wars... is not in audiobook, and long series with no audiobooks are hard for me to keep up D: Nice to see you're up to some SF as well, I've heard so many good things about Alien Clay--I may check it up on 2024! The lucky dip jar was great, and I think you got some amazing books there!

Yes, fingers crossed they will all work well for me, but I agree that *chunky* and long series can be tough with the way I read. Hopefully I can be disciplined with it if I like them enough to continue though.

I remember being a little unsure about Daughter of the Empire when I first started it. I loved the Riftwar cycle and I wasn't ready for the difference either. But I kept reading, and now it's one of my favorites. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I downloaded a sample of Black company a while back. It didn't appeal to me. But now I've read way more fantasy, including Malazan, so I'm thinking of giving it another try.

Yeah, I've heard that about The Black Company from a few people. However I land on it, at least I'll know! I'm hoping the time is now right for Daughter of the Empire, it definitely wasn't when I first tried it!

I look forward to your thoughts on a court of broken knives actually!!! Asp reign and ruin does have a lot of romance but it’s much better balanced than most fantasy romance so you may well still enjoy?

I'm looking forward to it too. For Reign & Ruin, I have a friend who has rather enjoyed it (and started reading romantasy since!) so I'm optimistic that it will go well for me!

There are a few on your list that I want. But I have a list of 25-26 books because I don't think I can read more. I have Nelson DeMille, Robert Jordan with Brandon Senderson, Hector Lozano, Pierce Brown, Jay Kristoff, Ariana Godoy + other authors that I don't know at the moment because I will choose them from a list at some point in time
