I never comment, but feel compelled to in this case. This an excellent video on a very thorough, high quality virtual pinball build. The reason I had to comment: I decided to click a link in the description as the channel owner has written 3 books available for sale on Amazon. I clicked expecting something typical like "How to Program Python" or other software design engineering... Imagine my surprise when the first link I clicked took me to a bench guide guide for rebuilding the very popular and ubiquitous 4L80E GM heavy duty Transmission! Sir, you are an inspirational modern renaissance man and my personal hero. Not only am I fascinated by DIY virtual pinball, but I've also rebuilt several 4L80Es - it's nice to know there are others with that weird sort of combination of interests. Thank you, and Cheers!

Always awesome to see quality craftmanship and attention to detail. We built a custom PFX3 unit for my 87 year old mother several years ago and she loves it. Your work reminded me of our machine... impressive! If you can, look into adding automotive solenoids to your unit. They add so much realism to the bumpers and flippers. We also added a small shaker motor, which if you like that sub rattling everything you would probably like as well. Anyway, just had to tell you great job on the build... looks amazing.

Great build! I went with a 4:1 14.9" DMD though as most games except for very modern ones use that and to me a full DMD just looks too busy and distracting but to each their own. I like my stuff very authentic though, for example I have a 26" CRT Wells Gardner in my MAME cabinet.
@GearheadDaily Жыл бұрын
The full 16:9 DMD is more versatile, I think. You can do EM games and the newer VPW releases too
@forbidden76 Жыл бұрын
@@GearheadDaily Yeah I get that. I rather it be more authentic though. 95%+ of all games with DMD's were built with a 4:1 DMD. Also PUP Packs decrease performance on many tables and even crash them. Just too many reasons for me to not go 16:9 15.6" now. Maybe later and I move my 4:1 as high score topper but I am liking like it is. I put a 3M monitor privacy filter over my LCD DMD to make it look darker and more authentic. Looks like a real DMD for quarter of the price.

Can you talk for a few about screws and fasteners? Everything I’ve read says typical wood screws can pull out of MDF / melamine super easy. Did you have any issues?
@GearheadDaily Жыл бұрын
Hah, ya I got a little hard times but the integrity really isn't that much better/worse than plywood. Its a tad heavier over all, but this was the best material for the job. I generally don't use screws to build cabinets carcasses, some I will for backs or to hold stuff in place, but generally just glue and nail gun to hold things while I put it together. That said, they do make a melamine specific screw that you can use and I've heard decent results, but honestly, just dado and rabbet the whole thing like i did and its going to be strong with just glue.
